Winter - Sotterley Plantation
The mission of Historic Sotterley, Inc. is to preserve, research, and interpret Sotterley Plantation’s diverse cultures and environments, and to serve the world as an educational, cultural, and community resource. Newsletter of Historic Sotterley, Inc. CFC #13401 Winter 2015 A YEAR YOU MADE POSSIBLE, P. 3 Dominion Grant Supports Sotterley and Its Mission This fall, Historic Sotterley, Inc. was proud to receive a generous grant of $10,000 from the Dominion Foundation in support of Sotterley’s mission of education, preservation, and cultural enrichment. Through its foundational giving, Dominion is dedicated to promoting community vitality by fostering an appreciation of diversity, revitalizing neighborhoods, and ensuring a vibrant community life through support of cultural endeavors. With this gift, Dominion demonstrates its understanding that Sotterley’s rich history, unique environment, and authentic buildings and settings are able to provide an irreplaceable connection for students and guests to our shared past. We offer our sincerest gratitude to Dominion for their support of Sotterley’s mission through this grant, and through this donation and the other generous support from our community, we will continue enriching the lives of thousands during the upcoming year. Set Sail on the S.S. Sotterley! Raffle tickets are now on sale to win a fabulous cruise to warmer climates! What a perfect stocking stuffer or gift for that hard-to-buy-for person! The winning ticket awards a Royal Caribbean Cruise Certificate for two to either the Caribbean or Bermuda at the Diamond certificate level and will enjoy a balcony stateroom. It will be valid for travel year-round (not valid over holidays or last 2 weeks of the year), for 4-5 nights, with an expanded selection of itinerary choices. Depending on the time and choice of destination, cruises depart from Baltimore, Florida and other possible locations. Certificates cover cruise fare, taxes and their standard recommended gratuities (airfare and alcohol are not included). Certificates have no expiration date. Certificates redeemed more than two years after the issue date will provide the holder of the certificate with a dollar credit amount against the cost of their cruise. The dollar credit amount will be based on the value for that type of certificate as shown in the Royal Caribbean price table in effect at the time the certificate was purchased. The certificate has no cash value. Winner uses the award and works with Travel Leaders to book their cruise of choice. All ticket purchases can be made online at www.sotterley.org! A Word from our President H I S TO R I C S O T T E R L E Y, I N C. BOARD OF TRUSTEES Janice L. Briscoe, Esq. President Donald Barber Vice President David G. Brown Secretary James W. Cornelsen Treasurer As we come to the end of another year, I am once again amazed at all that we have accomplished here at Sotterley thanks to all of the generous support we have received from so many. While we are always facing so many challenges, we somehow find a way, with your help, to not only keep our doors open but to expand our offerings to all of our visitors, including our new Land, Lives and Labor exhibit, our ever-expanding Farmer’s Market, and miles of nature trails. Your support also enables Sotterley to continue to host thousands of students who explore the rich history of our region in authentic settings that leave lasting impressions. • Robert B. Aldridge James Burke Michael Clayton Joseph W. Dyer Lynn R. Fitrell Bonnie M. Green Karen Holcomb M. Arshed Javaid Charles H. “Bert” Johnston Gregory “Steve” Proctor Thomas Russell The support that makes all this possible comes in many forms and is a shining example of the wonderful and caring community in which we live. Sotterley simply would not be the open and vibrant site that it continues to be without each of you, and we can all be proud of what we have accomplished together. I extend to you my deepest gratitude and warmest wishes to all for a joyous holiday season. Sincerely, Merideth M. This year’s script was written from a compilation of fan-favorites. Scenes included Dr. Walter Briscoe and his ill-fated patient, grave robbers, the premiere of Sotterley’s first Insane Asylum and a chilling warning for all of our guests. DID YOU KNOW? All of Ghosts of Sotterley’s cast and crew are volunteers, made mostly of high-school students who give up their evenings for weeks of rehearsals! A big thank you to everyone who made this year’s amazing performance possible! 13th Annual WineFest - While we are not normally ones to balk at inclement weather, Hurricane Joaquin’s threatening approach on October 3rd & 4th caused us, for the first time ever, to reschedule WineFest! Despite the delay, we still had a fantastic turn-out. Saturday’s weather was cold, wet and rainy, but our artisans and wineries were pleasantly surprised at how many people still came. Sunday dawned and the weather was gorgeous! A great big thank you to our maintenance staff and volunteers for all that straw and mulch they dispensed in order to combat the soaking our WineFest field endured the day before! Like always, we could not have done it all without our fantastic volunteers! See You Next Year! A Year You Made Possible – A Legacy You Helped Preserve Individuals, as well as organizations and grantors, make all that we do possible at Sotterley. Our generous donors and members made cash contributions, as well as valuable in-kind goods and services, all of which are reflected below. In-kind donations totaled over $130,000! The donations reflect gifts and grants received during FY 2015 (July 1st – June 30th, 2015). It was originally built in 1910 for Herbert Satterlee’s new caretaker, Charles Knott. Being our visitor’s first stop on their journey through 300 years of history, the Knott House has become one of our most iconic buildings. Purchase your ornament by calling the office at 301-373-2280 or by visiting us online or the Museum Shop. To receive a shipment by Christmas Day, please order by December 15th. Shipping and Handling rates apply. Have a very Merry Christmas! Sotterley began hosting Speaker Series in 2006 for the benefit of our community. In 2008, The Boeing Company stepped forward and agreed to sponsor this wonderful program as a community outreach and educational opportunity for our region. For the past eight years Boeing has continued to generously sponsor this event, and the series has touched thousands of lives during that time. The presentation topics have ranged from White House architecture, to veteran’s involvement in the sustainable farming movement, to the theft of some of our Nation’s greatest treasures, and to interpreting Mount Vernon’s slave quarters. There is always something for everyone in the variety and scope of topics each season, and Sotterley has been able to continue hosting remarkable speakers who give enriching and engaging presentations because of Boeing’s ongoing sponsorship and support.
