JEWISH LIFE INSTITUTE
Dr. Steven M. Cohen is a Research Professor whose work focuses on the American Jewish community. He is currently a
Professor of Jewish Social Policy at Hebrew Union College Jewish Institute of Religion, and Director of the Berman Jewish
Policy Archive at NYU Wagner which is a center for Jewish communal
and social policy. Dr. Cohen was a lead researcher for the recent
Pew Research Survey which examined changing American Jewish
identity. The Pew Research Center is a non-par tisan think tank
based in Washington, D.C . that provides information on social
issues, public opinion and demographic trends shaping the United
States and the world. The major new Pew study reports that American
Jews overwhelmingly say they are proud to be Jewish, but also
suggests that Jewish identity is changing in America. Join us for a
vigorous discussion on the results of the Pew Study and its implications
for the future of American Jewish Life.
LONG ISLAND SECTIONS
Helaine Gerber
How meaningful for Peninsula Section to be honoring Helaine Gerber at
this year’s Long Island Sections 19th
Annual Luncheon. Both luncheon
themes of “One Woman Makes a
Difference” and “Celebrating 120 of
NCJW Accomplishments” exemplify Helaine for she has been
both-as an individual and as an integral part of an organization dedicated to Tikkun Olam-repairing the world. Her bio
that spans over five decades is filled with commitment, achievements, and active involvement.
When asked about her earliest leadership role, she responded
quickly. It was when she was eight years old and a president
of a “girls club” from elementary school. From that early start
she has stepped into many other positions. Her volunteer and
professional careers are a combination of hands-on activities
and creating visionary change.
In 1961 she joined NCJW Brooklyn Section quickly becoming
a board member, officer, and president. During her tenure in
the Brooklyn Section Helaine was known for innovation. She
was instrumental in organizing the Business and Professional
Group, introducing special needs children into the section’s
Child Care Center, and negotiating with New York State for
a loan of $2,200,000 for renovations to their 5-story senior
center. It took seven years but she never gave up. She was and
is a “shaker and a mover.”
2
After those early years, Helaine became a force in the district
and national levels of NCJW. She was a representative to the
UN Committee for the International Year of the Woman, a
workshop leader at NCJW conventions, and part of Women in
Community Service (WICS).
With the1980’s came two life changes. First she took on the
responsibilities of being New York Section’s Executive Director
as their top professional leader. There she helped to establish
the Jewish Women’s Research Center. Then in 1983 she made
Aliyah. For twenty years, while living in Israel, Helaine continued to add to her volunteer resume. There she was elected
to the presidency of the prestigious Association for Americans
and Canadians in Israel.
Fortunately for Peninsula Section upon her return to the
United States, Helaine once again became actively involved
with NCJW. As a board member and officer she’s held Jewish
life, fundraising, and advocacy positions. In Long Island Sections
we can count on her participation by lending her experience
and willingness to assist.
Helaine is blessed with a loving and caring daughter Leslie and
her wonderful son-in-law Jay. Their children Erika and Brett
add much joy to her life. She is so very proud of all of
them. And for sure no account would be complete without
mentioning CoCo, her pet granddog!
In 1972 Helaine was the recipient of the prestigious Hannah G.
Solomon Award, NCJW’s highest honor, from Brooklyn Section.
Long Island Sections recognizes Helaine for her commitment of
forty-two years of making a difference.

F O U N D ERS DAY HONOREE
INTRODUCING…
MURIEL LAVENDA
Honoree of the
Hannah G. Solomon Award
un.flap.pa.ble adj.
not easily upset; unusually calm in a difficult situation.
This definition summarizes Muriel Lavenda. Who among us would
be able to work with 21 presidents and the many officers of a
dynamic organization such as NCJW Peninsula Section for 36 years
and still look fresh at the end of each day? She had to have Psych
101 in her DNA. For that distinction alone, she is a worthy
recipient of the Hannah G. Solomon Award.
When asked to describe her personality, Muriel immediately said “a
positive thinker.” Her philosophy is “Never go to bed angry.” Her
proud and supportive husband, Nat, added that if they had a minor
confrontation, Muriel would say “We have to solve it now because
it will only be worse tomorrow.” That is the essence of her ability
to work with and relate to the changing cast of presidents, officers
and members of Peninsula Section for 36 years.
She attributes her temperament to the environment in which
she grew up. She credits her mother as a role model who helped
Muriel’s father in his business with her innate organizational ability,
and encouraged Muriel to acquire secretarial skills. Growing up
in Woodside and Sunnyside, she graduated from William Cullen
Bryant H.S with an academic diploma but added a course in typing
which was the only secretarial skill she had at that time. After
graduation, she entered Nursing School at Mount Sinai. She had
to drop out after two years because of health reasons, and then
worked as a laboratory assistant at New York Hospital in the
department of sterility and infertility for four years, long before
the subject became a major area of research.
While living at the Nursing School, Muriel attended a dance at the
92nd Street “Y” where she met her future husband, Nat, who said
he will never forget the night he met Muriel. “She was the best and
still is.” He was 20 and she was 18 when they met, and the courtship
lasted three years before they married. Although busy raising three
daughters, she had a job as a school aide when all their children
were in school. After working there for six years, she moved on to
a job at the Edge Vern Jewish Center in Far Rockaway for several
years where she developed her secretarial skills. When that shul
merged with the larger Bayswater Jewish Center, she lost her job.
She held the position of Sisterhood President at both Edge-Vern
and Bayswater, and still is an active Sisterhood board member.
Appearing regularly at the Unemployment Office, the counselor
noted her previous employment history and said: “I have the right
job for you.” NCJW had placed a job opening for a secretary.
When she was interviewed by Roberta Ross, then president of
Peninsula Section, they discovered that both had graduated from
the same high school in the same year but had never met. This was
a definite plus in being offered the job October 1978. There had
been two secretaries named Harriet before Muriel, so for many
months the officers called her Harriet. She started work in the
interior office at 340 Central Avenue. When NCJW was planning
to move to the current building at 342, she was asked if there was
anything she would like and her answer was “I would like windows.”
She was an excellent typist and when computers were brought into
the office, she had no problem learning the new skill. In addition
to her office duties, she and Nat volunteered in the NCJW Thrift
Shop on Thursday evenings. Muriel worked alone for several years
until Betty Dickoff joined the staff. They became very good friends
during the 17 years they worked together. More recently, Linda
Tolkin and Soheila Peyman have joined the office staff. Muriel thinks
very highly of their abilities, professionalism and efficiency. Her
personal reward from working at NCJW for 36 years is that she
became more confident of herself and able to “read” people better
according to their needs and personalities. She could not recall
any situation that became over-stressful.
Muriel and Nat have been married 62 years and are justly proud of
their three daughters, sons-in-law and eight grandchildren. Lenore
is a first grade teacher in Florida and has two sons. Marian is a
nurse and supervises and teaches home-care nurses. She has three
sons and lives in New Jersey. Diane is Social Activities Director
in an assisted living facility. She has one son and two daughters.
She and her youngest daughter live with Muriel and Nat. When
Muriel informed her family of being honored with receiving the
prestigious Hannah G. Solomon Award, they responded “Of
course, you deserve the honor.”
Muriel believes her life has been enriched by knowing and working
with the wonderful women of NCJW. She enjoys her family, is an
avid reader, and loves chocolate. She is always perfectly groomed
and tastefully put together, the epitome of a lady.

COMMUNITY SERVICE
Become a Volunteer.....
Group therapy is praised as one of the most critical and expedient tools of human behavior. In my new position as Vice
President of Community Services I don’t need the therapy part
but I certainly value the group part. I have had the pleasure
sharing in the events of the various community services and
will continue doing so.
To date my involvement with Community Service volunteers
and their activities are as follows. Breakfast and discussion
with NCJW volunteers and some staff of the District 14 ESL
program. I also attended a breakfast with NCJW volunteers
and parents at the “Intergenerational Reading Program” in
the Deever School Library in Valley Stream. I joined NCJW
volunteers, staff and pre-school children at the 5 Towns Early
Learning Center during their Chanukkah celebration. I attended a holiday “show” and party along with NCJW volunteers, parents, staff and the children of our SIBS program.
In addition, I met an adult group of hardworking NCJW and
other volunteers at the board meeting of one of our senior
services - Center for Adult Life Enrichment (CALE)
During all these visits and being part of each group I felt such
gratitude, much excitement and multitudinous pride in the
work and participation of our NCJW volunteers. The wonderful people that I met are committed to provide leadership,
friendship, encouragement and understanding to the children
and adults in our community. To all these admirable VOLUNTEERS I send my heartfelt thanks. Yes, they are proof that our
Mission Statement is being achieved and carried on.

PENINSULA SECTION REACHES OUT
to ISRAEL and SUPPORTS
TURNING THE TABLES
Each year the members of Peninsula Section’s Board of
Directors have the privilege of earmarking dollars towards one
of NCJW’s Israel Granting Sites. This time our choice was an
easy one to make. The selected organization mirrors an issue of
growing importance, human trafficking. Locally we have focused
on this crisis by creating awareness, advocating for stricter laws;
reviewing A Walk Across the Sun by Corban Addison, a book
about this form of modern slavery; and showing “Half the Sky
Part II,” a film based on this evil.
“Turning the Tables” is a social initiative that supports women
who have broken out of the cycle of prostitution and human
trafficking. It helps them to live productive and independent
lives. The “Turning the Tables Initiative” centers around a fashion
design studio, where women receive social services and vocational
training enabling them to eventually earn a livelihood. This
feminist program aims to improve the economic and professional
empowerment of women who exit the destructive cycle of drug
abuse, prostitution, prison and street life. In Israel approximately
15,000 adult women and teenage boys and girls need this help.
Many of them have been trafficked from other places, especially
from African countries engaged in civil war, such as Eritrea and
Sudan. In recent years there has been a growing awareness that
this target community needs specialized rehabilitative services.
“Turning the Tables” is the first and only program to address this
issue in Israel.
We thank each of you who have purchased a tribute card in
support of the NCJW Israel Granting Program. Your individual
contributions have ensured that we reach our goal of $2500.
Please remember Peninsula’s tribute funds when you want to
mark a life cycle moment. Just call the office at 569-3660 to have
a card mailed out.

JAMES COLL
James Coll is an Adjunct Associate Professor
of American and Constitutional history at
Nassau Community College. He is also a
detective in a tactical and rescue unit for the
New York City Police Department. In his
work with the NYPD, he has received numerous awards, including being named Cop
of the Year by the New York City Police
Foundation for the efforts of his unit during
the US Airways Flight 1549 plane crash in
the Hudson River. One year later, he was part of the FEMA NY
Task Force Urban Search and Rescue Team deployed to Haiti to
search for earthquake survivors.
Can a police officer frisk someone who is not taken into custody?
Is evidence seized without a warrant admissible in court? Does
the Miranda warning have to be read to every suspect arrested?
Is the search of a vehicle operated by someone who violated a minor traffic infraction lawful? James Coll, presents an informative
lecture with a unique perspective. Highlighting circumstances and
Supreme Court decisions, the discussion will illustrate how Founding-era ideals have been applied to the evolving powers and limitations of the police in modern society.

Speakers: Manizha Naderi
This inspiring film reveals the moving stories of girls who, despite
incredible challenges, demand the right to speak up for themselves and be educated. Nine girls push beyond personal
boundaries in a quest to realize their dreams. Their inspirational
stories demonstrate the power of education to change lives and
shape the world around them. For sure, they demonstrate that
education works as a powerful force for change: girls are not
the problems; they are the problem-solvers!
Ticket Distribution: School District #14 community members may pick up their tickets from the
library beginning Wednesday, March 12th 10am and 7pm. NCJW members may call the NCJW office
(516-569-3660) and leave their name to reserve a ticket. Please allow one half hour before the
film to pick up your tickets in the library’s Gold Room the day of the screening.
