Ford’s Last
Magazine Clip
Installed
On Oct. 30, Newport News Shipbuilding
installed the last of more than 300,000
magazine clips on the aircraft carrier
Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78). The
clips allow the magazine space to be
reconfigured for different stowage
accommodations. This is the first time
that all magazine clips have been
installed on a carrier prior to launch.
“We invited Vice President of CVN
78 Carrier Construction Rolf Bartschi
to come install the very last clip, said
Tom Sweeney, X88 superintendent.
Shipbuilder Dante Fennel (X32) and
welder Jonathan Braxton (X18)
assisted Bartschi with the installation.
“Everything went very well – we’re
extremely happy with the outcome and
especially proud of our shipbuilders for
completing this task before Ford leaves
the dry dock,” said Sweeney.

Roosevelt’s Purser Team
Recognized at Luncheon
Shipbuilders Kendra Claiborne (K74),
Margit Collamore (X70), Doug King
(X74), Randy Flowers (X75), Dave
Shaffer (X75), Brad Thomas (X74),
Walter Williams (K74), Debbie
Worrell (X74), Purser Kimberly
Holland (X74) and Assistant Purser
Melyssa LaLonde (X74) served as the
USS Theodore Roosevelt’s
(CVN 71) Purser Team during sea trials.
The 11-person team was responsible
for coordinating rider arrangements for
more than 500 shipbuilders and manning
the “check-in” station onboard Roosevelt
24-hours a day while at sea. The entire
team was recognized during a lessons
learned luncheon on Sept. 11.
“The Purser’s Team was involved in
every aspect from getting the riders
information, preparing snacks and
office spaces, to assuring all riders were
accounted for every morning and during
man overboard drills,” said Holland. “I

team from beginning to end. Together,
we were able to pull-off a successful
sea trial – thank you to all who were
involved.”

Submarine Engineering
Celebrates Miami Effort
More than 125 shipbuilders gathered in
the Apprentice School Gym on
Oct. 25 to celebrate the commitment and
dedication of employees who contributed
to the emergent and unexpected work on
the USS Miami (SSN 755) restoration
project. Employees from across the
shipyard quickly responded to help
assess, plan and design repairs in an
attempt to restore the damaged warship.
Newport News Shipbuilding quickly
assembled the team needed to meet the
Navy’s schedule.
While the restoration proved too
costly to compete in the sensitive
environment of the Navy’s budget,
Submarine Engineering Director
Dave Bolcar praised the team. “This
was a difficult job, it was not planned
work. It required us to react quickly to
develop new processes and procedures,
and to assemble a team to execute
the restoration effort,” said Bolcar. “I
really appreciate the teamwork and
long hours put in by many of you as we
had to absorb this job into our existing
workload. This task showed that we can
be agile and react quickly to changing
priorities – a necessity as we navigate
into future growth opportunities for the
company.”

NEW! The Apprentice
School Launches New
Website
Update your website
“favorites” to add a new web
address for The Apprentice
School (as.edu). The new
site has a sleek design and
improved navigation that makes accessing information about
the school easier than ever. Some of the new features include
photo and video galleries and expanded information about
the school’s registered apprenticeships, course offerings and
application process.
SUBSAFE Awareness Training
The Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE) Department has created
a combined awareness training course which includes the
Submarine Safety (SUBSAFE), Deep Submergence Systems Scope of Certification (DSS-SOC), and the Fly-By-Wire Ship
Control Systems (FBW SCS) Programs. This new training
replaces separate training courses with a single course so that
employees will receive awareness training for all three critical
submarine certification programs in one training session.
The course can be taken via the Learning Exchange (LX),
at any O26 “Point-Of-Use” training location, or through
Submarine Indoctrination Training (6010 Training).
Employees who were previously trained and have a current,
unexpired certification will not be required to take the new
SUBSAFE Program Awareness training until their current
qualification expires.
All employees who now require SUBSAFE Program
Awareness training as a result of the revised requirements in
Q-44 have until Feb. 1, 2014 to complete the training. Contact
Pam Cabanatan (O03) at 534-2583 or Kristyn Parsons
(O03) at 688-3147 for questions.
