CURRENTS NOV A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding 19 NNS Apprentice Receives State Apprenticeship Award VCS Honors Quality Craftsman of the Month Read on p. 3 Did You Work on New Construction of USS Enterprise? Read on p. 3 Greg Hoefflin, a nuclear test technician for Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), was named an Outstanding Apprentice for 2012 by the Virginia Apprenticeship Council on Nov. 15. Hoefflin, a 2012 graduate of The Apprentice School at NNS, is the ninth Apprentice School graduate to receive the honor since it was first awarded in 1998. Food Drive: Help Fight Hunger this Holiday Season Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) “Caring and Sharing” Holiday Food Drive to benefit the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula is ongoing through Dec. 7. Hoefflin started at NNS in 2005 as a sheet metal mechanic and took night school courses to prepare himself for acceptance into The Apprentice School. Hoefflin earned an associate’s degree in engineering from Tidewater Community College and is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. “I am proud to receive this honor,” Hoefflin said. “It is always a good feeling to have your hard work recognized.” Read on p. 3 USS Kearsarge Bonds Shipbuilder and Son After nearly three months in Newport News Shipbuilding’s (NNS) Dry Dock 2, USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) and its crew are scheduled to depart NNS and return to the ship’s homeport at Naval Station Norfolk in the coming weeks. For shipbuilder Charles Dunlevy (O36), this day will come with mixed emotions as he says farewell to his son, U.S. Navy Seaman Eugene Dunlevy, who is currently stationed aboard LHD 3. “While Kearsarge has been docked at NNS, it has given my son and I some special bonding time,” said Dunlevy. “In addition to commuting to work each day together, we also had the opportunity to meet on occasion in the yard and he was proud to take me on a tour aboard the Kearsarge. NNS has Nov. 19 - 23, 2012 Shipbuilder Charles Dunlevy (O36) and son U.S. Navy Seaman Eugene Dunlevy stand in front of USS Kearsarge (LHD 3). Kearsarge is scheduled to leave NNS in the coming weeks. Evans, nicknamed “Big E” by fellow shipbuilders, was selected for the award by VCS leadership for his consistent quality of work. “Evans’ crew is responsible for the electrical side of nuclear systems,” said VCS Electrical General Foreman Keith Martin. “Larry approaches each assignment thoughtfully and with the goal of zero defects. He has installed many complex and Pictured (L to R): Virginia-Class Submarine Program Director Chris Miner, Larry Evans (X31) and Vice President of Submarines and Fleet Support Jim Hughes. Houdashell Sr. Memorial Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded in memory of Charlie Houdashell, former superintendent of the Fabrication Department and a graduate of The Apprentice School. It recognizes outstanding academic achievement of an Apprentice School graduate attending Christopher Newport University (CNU), either parttime or full-time. Batdorf, a graduate of The Apprentice School’s Class of 1983, will graduate from CNU in December with a bachelor’s degree in business management. He was formally recognized at the 21st Annual Scholarship Donor and Recipient Luncheon and Program, held at CNU on Nov. 8. ASSA Hosts Inaugural Golf Tournament to Honor Veterans On Nov. 11, The Apprentice School’s Student Association (ASSA) hosted the first annual Veteran’s Day Golf Classic at Cypress Creek Golfers Club in Smithfield. More than 100 golfers took part in the event aimed at honoring the men and women of the U.S. armed forces. The Newport News Chapter (two) of the Disabled American Veterans organization was selected to receive the $2,000 proceeds from the tournament. “ASSA hopes to make the tournament an annual event that creates a sense of patriotic pride casting The Apprentice Front row (L to R): Shanette Saxton-Garner, Kevin Doyle, Gary Garner, Elisha Davis, Patrice Gwynn, and Everett Jordan, director of Education for The Apprentice School. Back row (L to R): Paul Norton, Chanelle Cooper, Lambert Butler, Seth Benton, and Danny Hunley, vice president of Operations. School and Newport News Shipbuilding as institutions of great fortitude and fully focused on recognizing U.S. troops past and present for all that they have done for our great country,” said Apprentice Gary Garner (O38). NOV 19 CURRENTS p. 3 Food Drive: Help Fight Hunger this Holiday Season Tone-at-the-Middle Continued from p. 1... Peninsula food insecurity rates averaging 13.3 percent (e.g. Hampton 15.5 percent and Newport News 15.2 percent). Boxes will also be located on the piers and docks. Departments or individuals wishing to donate money to the Foodbank can deliver cash or check contributions (checks made payable to the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula) to Brenda Roth (O18) in Bldg. 520-1 by noon on Wednesday, Dec. 5. For a list of non-perishable food items and additional information on NNS’ 2012 Food Drive, visit the O18 Yardnet website. Jessica Gomez E81 Manager Q: How do ethical values and commitments apply to decisions middle managers have to make? A: Managers make decisions that can drastically impact our culture, processes and products, not to mention affecting people’s livelihood. These decisions require serious consideration and may weigh heavily on one’s mind, but you cannot let fear hold you back. When you center up with your ethical values each time you make a difficult decision, you can sleep well at night no matter the outcome because you did the right thing. Chris Yoko E60 Manager Q: How do you demonstrate your commitment to ethics and integrity in your department? A: I emphasize daily that we are responsible for the products we issue. It is up to us to ensure that our products are technically and administratively correct. Everyone on my team understands that signing their name to their product indicates that we made every effort to do it right. Equally as important, I stress that when an error has been made, we own it and do what needs to be done to do to fix it. We research the cause and identify a corrective action to prevent similar problems in the future. But no matter what, we don’t cover up the problem and pretend like it doesn’t exist.
