NNS Employees Receive
National Safety Award
Shipbuilders Ron Whiteman (X11) and Terry Gray (X42), from the Manufacturing Division at
Newport News Shipbuilding, were recently selected as winners of the 2016 Voluntary Protection
Programs Participants’ Association’s (VPPPA) Safety & Health Achievement Award.
The VPPPA Safety and Health Achievement Program recognizes safety and health achievements
of hourly workers at VPPPA member sites. Winners are selected each year by the VPPPA Awards
Committee and approved by the VPPPA National Board of Directors.
“These gentlemen have been key contributors to the Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) task
teams within Manufacturing, and their efforts are well deserved of this significant award,” said Vice
President of Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management Rob Hogan.
Both will be invited to attend the 32nd Annual National VPPPA Safety & Health Conference in
Kissimmee, Florida on August 28 to be recognized and presented with awards. The council will then
invite the winners to a subsequent council meeting for additional recognition.
PMI-NNS Holds First Kickoff
Meeting
On July 19, over 110 employees attended the
first kickoff meeting for the Project Management
Institute Organization at Newport News
Shipbuilding (PMI-NNS). The topic of the
meeting was “What is Project Management?”
and was presented by Vice President of
Integrated Planning and Production Control
Brian Fields, executive sponsor for (PMI-NNS).
The presentation focused on defining project
management at NNS and identifying users of
project management principles and methods of

PMI-NNS Holds First Kickoff Meeting

“We have to make project management an important part of our business by getting the right people,
right processes, right training and right tools in place,” said Fields.
Currently, over 200 employees are active members of PMI-NNS, and they represent 78 NNS
departments and 11 divisions. The organization’s mission is to introduce and maintain a companywide approach to project and program management by developing employees and enhancing their
project management skills in accordance with PMI standards. Members receive valuable networking
and collaboration experience, acquire professional development units needed for re-certification, and
gain knowledge and support for obtaining PMI certifications from other PMI certified employees.
PMI-NNS will host its next event in August, and the topic will be “Project Management
Framework,” presented by PMI-NNS Chairperson Ashley Cadwallader (X89). For additional

Fall 2016 Night School registration is underway.

of September 19 and will conclude the week
of November 19. The application deadline is

The Access 2013 Intermediate class that is being
offered for the Fall 2016 session has changed its
name to Access 2013 Introduction.
Pending level of interest, the Ship’s Theory,
Design and Systems class will be offered in the
Fall 2016 session.

Reproduction Services—
Circa 1969
The days of producing blueprint drawings and
operating offset printers at Newport News
Shipbuilding are long gone.
A 1969 photo of employees operating offset
printers not only demonstrates the longstanding
history of Reproduction Services, but also tells
the story of dedicated shipbuilders who continue
to work long hours to support the business.
“We are dedicated to providing quality products,
timely service and excellent customer service
every day,” said Supervisor of Reproduction
Services George Riddick. “We are always
looking internally for new ideas to improve and
better support the business while focusing on
our customers’ needs.”

Today, Reproduction Services continues to provide quality work to support shipbuilding. The
department offers multiple services including, but not limited to, reproduction, label plating,
document scanning and digital archiving for records retention. It also offers a full-scale sign shop.

Shipbuilders Recognized at
TNCC Graduation
During the 47th annual Thomas Nelson
Community College (TNCC) commencement
ceremony on May 12, 48 shipbuilders were
recognized for completing the TNCC Career
Studies and Certificate Programs.
The NNS Night School and TNCC have
partnered together to support the Hourly
Leadership Development Program, which
enhances the skills and knowledge necessary for
employees interested in management.
Certificate programs currently offered
to employees include Fundamentals of
Organizational Leadership, Supervision and
Business Management (formerly Industrial
Management).

Everyone Plays a Role in Enhancing Engagement
Building and increasing engagement is everyone’s responsibility and is a strategic priority for
the company. Engaged work teams consistently outperform less-engaged teams in terms of
safety, quality and overall performance.
Great leaders build respectful and trusting relationships with their employees and recognize
every interaction influences their perspective and engagement. Below are a few tips leaders
and managers can use to help build a more engaged team:
1. Focus on engagement and inclusion at all organizational levels. Work with
employees to identify barriers to engagement and then take action toward positive
change. Ensure employees are familiar with the company’s processes, systems,
products and customers. They have valuable opinions and ideas to deliver improved
performance, business innovation and better workplace experiences.
2. Be a great leader. The best leaders know their success depends on employees’
achievements. Great leaders care about the success of their team and seek to understand
each person’s strengths, so they can provide opportunities for them to succeed. Great
leaders empower employees and recognize and value their contributions.
3. Use the performance management process successfully. Performance management
helps managers promote engagement by clarifying expectations, providing coaching
and feedback on employee performance, offering praise and recognition, and
supporting opportunities for development.
Great leaders find ways to communicate the importance of engagement at all organizational
levels. They share best practices across the organization, and use every opportunity and
communication channel to reinforce and recognize the organization’s commitment to
employee development and engagement.
Employees are encouraged at every level to engage in meaningful discussions with their
managers and leaders, to clarify expectations and ensure the manager understands how
they can best help the employee be successful. This dialogue should take place between an
employee and their immediate supervisor, but also their supervisors’ manager or Human
Resources, if additional help is needed. It is critical that the time we spend on performance
management be fruitful.
L.E.A.R.N. to Host After Work
Event
The L.E.A.R.N. program will host an after-work
presentation with Jim Hughes, vice president
of Submarines and Undersea Programs, from
4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. on August 23 in the VASCIC
Auditorium.
Prizes and refreshments will follow the
presentation. The event is open to all employees

Salaried-exempt employees
are required to record
time worked during their
standard 8-hour shift unless
eligible for premium pay or
pre-approved to use flex
time.
For example:
The employee’s standard shift is from 7:30 a.m. to
4:00 p.m., but they worked from 6:00 a.m. until
4:30 p.m.
The employee should charge their time to the
appropriate direct (project/contract) or indirect
(overhead) charges that they worked between
7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. (excluding lunch) and the
employee should not record any time prior to
7:30 a.m. or after 4:00 p.m. unless eligible for
premium pay or pre-approved to use flex time.
On August 25, Huntington Ingalls Industries along
with Wurth Revcar Fasteners, Inc., will host an
Engineering and Fastener Expo in VASCIC, rooms
217 and 219, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Attendees
will have an opportunity to meet with application
engineers and technical specialists from over 20
premier suppliers, and they will be able to learn about
the latest developments in assembly technology.
The event is open to all HII and NNS employees who
are interested in fastening and electrical assembly
technologies. Appetizers and refreshments will be
served during the event, and a free shuttle is available
for pickup and drop-off.

SHIPs Network Hosts Annual
Summer Picnic
On June 25, more than 200 SHIPs Network members
and their families attended the SHIPs Annual Summer
Picnic held at Big Bethel Park in Hampton. The event
was decorated with a luau theme, and guests enjoyed
a photo booth, face painting and other fun activities.
“Did You Know” articles are part of an ongoing series
intended to educate, highlight, and reinforce Newport
News Shipbuildings’ commitment to company-wide
timely and accurate time recording.
During the event, SHIPs Network sponsored a food
drive for the local Food Bank, and attendees donated
over 112 lbs. of non-perishable food items.

sponsor for the third annual One City Marathon
on Sunday, March 12, 2017. NNS and Huntington
Ingalls Industries employees are eligible for an
early-bird discount now through August 15 for all
four races—Marathon, Relay, 8K and Nautical Mile.

select NNS as the employer and the discount will
be automatically applied. The early-bird rates will
expire on August 16, but a discount of $5.00 will
still be available. Rates are expected to increase
several times before the event date.
