The increased shipment capacity is in support of the U.S. Navy’s two-submarines-per-year build rate. Photo by Chris Oxley NNS and Electric Boat Exchange Submarine Modules On Sept. 19, Newport News Shipbuilding shipped two Virginia-class submarine modules to program partner General Dynamics Electric Boat — a first for the program and part of the plan to increase shipment capacity in support of the U.S. Navy’s two-submarines-per-year build rate. The module that comprises the torpedo room for North Dakota (SSN 784) was loaded onto the sea shuttle, which is used for the two-plus-day voyage to Electric Boat’s main shipyard in Groton, Conn. Right behind it was the module containing the auxiliary machine room (AMR) for John Warner (SSN 785), which is headed to Electric Boat’s fabrication plant in Quonset Point, R.I. The AMR, which departed on a commercial barge, comprises machinery such as a back-up diesel generator, pumps, motors and other electrical equipment. “These shipments represent the 99th and 100th barge shipments between Electric Boat and Newport News Shipbuilding,” said Jim Hughes, NNS’ vice president, Submarines and Fleet Support. “It’s satisfying to see these units being exchanged at such a remarkable pace, and we look forward to turning the final products over to the U.S. Navy.” New! Employee Engagement Resources Website Launched An Employee Engagement Resources website is now available on Yardnet. The site has resources for all shipbuilders; engagement tools, videos of success stories, recommended reading, and an events calendar. There is also a Champions/Coaches pages with tools, references, books, and a list of training opportunities. Shipbuilders donated a variety of school supplies, including 6,258 pencils, 4,386 ball point pens and 911 packs of paper. The supplies were sorted and delivered on Sept. 14 to area departments of social services, Newport News Public Schools Administration and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Virginia Peninsula as part of United Way’s Day of Caring. “Huntington Ingalls Industries stresses the importance of education and encourages our employees to get 2012 Day of Caring (L to R): Gary Guye (O41), Joanne Watkins (T55), Darryl Didly (X11), Brenda Roth (O18), Marcia Downing (O36), Paula Young (O68), Cindi Wolfe (O18), and Lynn Vance (K73). Shipbuilders Angelo Walton (M53) and Rachel Gilpin (T50) are not pictured, Photo by Ricky Thompson involved in their communities,” said Chavis Harris, director, EEO, diversity and corporate citizenship. “School Tools allows us to engage in both. We are shipbuilders, but we are parents and grandparents too and equipping our youth for a successful school year is a very worthy cause.” Shipbuilder Recognized as YWCA Woman of Distinction On Sept. 19, Stephanie Simmons, director of Navy Program Operations, was honored with a YWCA Women of Distinction Award in the science and technology category. The recognition ceremony was held at Christopher Newport University. In choosing the YWCA Women of Distinction Award recipients, a selection committee takes into consideration the nominees’ professional and civic achievements, as well as how the nominees exemplify the values and mission of the organization. The winner in the science and technology category has achieved distinction in her field for scientific advancement. View the news release for additional information. NNS Receives Virginia Living Museum’s Highest Honor Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS) received the Virginia Living Museum’s Golden Paw Award, the museum’s highest honor. The award, a bronze bobcat statue by Eastern Shore sculptor David Turner, was presented during a reception Sept. 20 at the museum. “We are honored to have been selected for this award, and we are proud to have supported the Virginia Living Museum for more than 30 years,” said Ken Mahler, vice president of Navy Programs. “We are grateful for the awareness, outreach and education that the museum provides that is so important to the well-being of our community.” The Golden Paw Award was created in 1995 to recognize outstanding service and support of the museum. NNS has partnered with the museum for more than three decades by providing financial and leadership support.
