Foundry Graduates
First Female Apprentice
One of the oldest apprenticeships offered at Newport News Shipbuilding is
the Foundry Mold Apprenticeship. Since the program’s start in 1902, it has
been offered three different times and has graduated 112 male apprentices.
On Aug. 3, 2015, Shanae Hilliard became the first female to graduate from
the program, paving the way for other female apprentices including Jessica
Neighbors and Sara Neuberger, who are currently enrolled in the program.
“I take a lot of pride in accomplishing this milestone for The Apprentice
School, the Foundry and Newport News Shipbuilding,” said Hilliard. “This
experience required me to become a leader and I’m very appreciative of that.”
Hilliard says that the Foundry can be labor intensive at times. “When I first
began, it was questionable if I was going to be able to rotate in certain areas
of the shop because of rigorous operations,” said Hilliard. “However, that
perspective has changed. Although, I felt as if I had a lot to prove along the
way, I had a great support system from my fellow apprentices and Foundry
co-workers.”
Hilliard’s Apprentice Instructor Sean Massey says he’s proud of Shanae’s
accomplishments. “I can’t say enough positive things about Shanae. She is
bright, energetic and is eager to learn. I am confident that she will be able to
accomplish anything she sets her mind to and I look forward to seeing her as
a colleague working in the Foundry,” he said.

E&D Shipbuilders Thank Craftsmen and
Craftswomen on National Tradesmen Day
In honor of National Tradesmen Day, members of Newport News
Shipbuilding’s Engineering and Design (E&D) team went out to shipyard
gates on Friday, Sept. 18 to greet thousands of craftsmen and craftswomen
and thank them for their skill and dedication.
Cindy Kirby, who leads engagement efforts for E&D, was stationed at the
at 37th Street Gate on Friday. “As team members within Engineering and
Design, we want to thank our crafts men and women for making our designs
come to life,” she said. “We sometimes forget that such a simple expression ...

Heart Walk Events
Nearly 100 employees signed up for this year’s
Heart Walk during their lunch break at the
North Yard’s Applebee’s on Sept. 15.
When asked why they wanted to participate,
Shelia Harrison (X33) said, “I have people in
my family with heart problems. My daughter’s
grandparents died due to heart problems, so
it means a lot to me. We do the walk in honor
of them.”
X33 Painters Shenita McKeller and Thomas
Evans also said that the walk is important to
them. “I’ve had high blood pressures since I
was seventeen, and my grandfather died of a
stroke,” said McKeller. “So this walk means a
lot to me, especially when it comes to raising
awareness for others.”
Evans said, “I’ve always donated cash, but I’ve
never volunteered my time. This year, I wanted
to do something different and see what the
event is all about.”

The Hampton Roads Heart Walk events will be held on Oct. 10 at Mount Trashmore in Virginia
Beach and Oct. 17 at the Peninsula Town Center in Hampton. The walk is FREE to register for and
all NNS team participants, including friends and family, will receive an NNS T-shirt. There is still
time to become a Team Lead or to join an existing NNS team. Watch the NNS Heart Walk Video on
Yardnet or on HII’s Facebook page from a home computer. For more information, visit

Shipbuilder Presented with Ethics Award
Donna Black (O89) was recently presented with an Ethics On-the-Spot Level 1 Award for helping
the company to comply with copyright laws. Black discovered that YouTube videos are for personal
use only and written consent of licensor’s is required for non-personal use. Her awareness led to
the A/V staff receiving training from the Law Department and information was then cascaded
throughout the company during Ethics Awareness Week, Aug. 17-21. Currently, the VASCIC
Conference Center is in the process of incorporating information into the reservation process.

Hispanic Heritage Month: “Many Stories, Many Backgrounds, One American Spirit”
Hispanic Heritage Month honors the millions of Hispanic Americans
whose love of family, hard work, and community have helped unite the
United States as a Nation.
The Navy recognizes the service of nearly 70,000 Hispanic sailors and
civilians who comprise approximately 11 percent of the Navy’s active,
reserve and civilian forces. Prominent Hispanics in the Navy include:
Hospital-man 2nd Class Luis Fonseca Jr. who received the Navy Cross for
extraordinary heroism in the presence of great danger during Operation
Iraqi Freedom March 23, 2003. Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy
(SW/FMF) Joe R. Campa Jr., the first Hispanic MCPON. Captain Yvette
Davids, who took command of the USS Curts (FFG 38) in 2010 and was the
first Hispanic woman to command a surface combatant and naval vessel
at sea. As of 2014, twenty-seven Hispanic officers have achieved flag rank.
named for Hispanics, including the USS Farragut (DDG 99), USS Gonzalez
(DDG 66), USS Garcia (DE 014), USNS Benavidez (T-AKR 306), USS Valdez
(FF 1096), USNS 1st Lt. Baldomero Lopez (T-AK 310), USS Simon Bolivar
(SSBN 641), and the USS Mariano G. Vallejo (SSBN 658).
Hispanic Heritage Month is Sept. 15-Oct. 15 and is an opportunity to
recognize diversity and celebrate the rich culture added to Newport
News Shipbuilding by Hispanic American Shipbuilders. NNS’ Hispanic
Outreach Leadership Alliance (HOLA) will celebrate Hispanic Heritage
Month from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 29 in Bldg. 520-6
(James River Room). NNS President Matt Mulherin will be the guest
speaker for the event. All employees are invited and the event will include
light refreshments, music and displays.
Visit the HOLA website to join or learn more about HOLA.

Employee Engagement Survey to
Begin Oct. 7
The next employee engagement survey will
begin on Oct. 7. All employees are encouraged
to participate. This year, an additional question
has been added to the survey, “My supervisor
creates an environment that is trusting and
open.” As always, the survey is 100 percent
confidential. Employees with computer
access will be sent a link to access the survey.
Employees without computer access will receive
hard copies. Read a letter from Mike Petters,
HII president and CEO, or visit the Engagement
website for more information about the survey.
Who Should HR Call in an
Emergency?
If you are involved in an emergency situation
at HII, the company may need to notify your
designated emergency point-of-contact.
Human Resources is encouraging all employees
to complete and/or update their emergency
contact information (Form: NN 9-1 (rev. 9)),
which is available on Forms Viewer or by
clicking the Emergency Contact Update link on
the HR Yardnet website. Employees may also
go to the receptionist’s desk in Bldg. 500-1 to
obtain a paper form.
Human Resources’ system of record (SAP)
will be updated with this emergency contact
information you provide. It will be secure and
only used by Human Resources management.
Thank you for your support in improving our
emergency notification process at HII.

Liza Carter (E25) was one of the six E&D team members at the 35th Street Gate. “I believe that
