Foundry Graduates First Female Apprentice
9 | 21 | 2015 A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding Foundry Graduates First Female Apprentice One of the oldest apprenticeships offered at Newport News Shipbuilding is the Foundry Mold Apprenticeship. Since the program’s start in 1902, it has been offered three different times and has graduated 112 male apprentices. On Aug. 3, 2015, Shanae Hilliard became the first female to graduate from the program, paving the way for other female apprentices including Jessica Neighbors and Sara Neuberger, who are currently enrolled in the program. “I take a lot of pride in accomplishing this milestone for The Apprentice School, the Foundry and Newport News Shipbuilding,” said Hilliard. “This experience required me to become a leader and I’m very appreciative of that.” Hilliard says that the Foundry can be labor intensive at times. “When I first began, it was questionable if I was going to be able to rotate in certain areas of the shop because of rigorous operations,” said Hilliard. “However, that perspective has changed. Although, I felt as if I had a lot to prove along the way, I had a great support system from my fellow apprentices and Foundry co-workers.” Hilliard’s Apprentice Instructor Sean Massey says he’s proud of Shanae’s accomplishments. “I can’t say enough positive things about Shanae. She is bright, energetic and is eager to learn. I am confident that she will be able to accomplish anything she sets her mind to and I look forward to seeing her as a colleague working in the Foundry,” he said. E&D Shipbuilders Thank Craftsmen and Craftswomen on National Tradesmen Day In honor of National Tradesmen Day, members of Newport News Shipbuilding’s Engineering and Design (E&D) team went out to shipyard gates on Friday, Sept. 18 to greet thousands of craftsmen and craftswomen and thank them for their skill and dedication. Cindy Kirby, who leads engagement efforts for E&D, was stationed at the at 37th Street Gate on Friday. “As team members within Engineering and Design, we want to thank our crafts men and women for making our designs come to life,” she said. “We sometimes forget that such a simple expression ... When asked why they wanted to participate, Shelia Harrison (X33) said, “I have people in my family with heart problems. My daughter’s grandparents died due to heart problems, so it means a lot to me. We do the walk in honor of them.” X33 Painters Shenita McKeller and Thomas Evans also said that the walk is important to them. “I’ve had high blood pressures since I was seventeen, and my grandfather died of a stroke,” said McKeller. “So this walk means a lot to me, especially when it comes to raising awareness for others.” Evans said, “I’ve always donated cash, but I’ve never volunteered my time. This year, I wanted to do something different and see what the event is all about.” Pictured (L to R): Matt Hildreth (O28) and NNS Heart Walk Team Lead Amy McDonald (O29) handed out giveaways at Applebee’s on Sept. 15 to employees that signed up to participate in Hampton Roads Heart Walk events. Black discovered that YouTube videos are for personal use only and written consent of licensor’s is required for non-personal use. Her awareness led to the A/V staff receiving training from the Law Department and information was then cascaded throughout the company during Ethics Awareness Week, Aug. 17-21. Currently, the VASCIC Conference Center is in the process of incorporating information into the reservation process.
