CURRENTS OCT A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding 15 Shipbuilders Raise Awareness and Money to Prevent Heart Disease More than 200 shipbuilders from Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII) and AMSEC participated in the American Heart Association’s (AHA) Hampton Roads Heart Walk on Saturday, Oct. 13 at Newport News Park. NNS had a total of 12 teams participate in the walk and collectively raised more than $17,500 to exceed the company’s goal of $10,000. Together, HII, NNS and AMSEC raised more than $34,500 to support the fight against heart disease. An American Heart Association Representative (left) awards shipbuilder Tom Cullen with a “Change of Lifestyle” award. Photo by John Whalen Tom Cullen, CVN 78 construction director, was one of the shipbuilders recognized at the walk. During the event, Cullen walked with “Team Cullen,” consisting of his wife, children and grandchildren. “It was an honor to be recognized at such an important event that is taking a stand against heart disease and helping save lives,” he said. “Joining the hundreds of fellow shipbuilders shows our deep rooted involvement in the community. The funds raised by the HII teams will support various projects in our communities that can help save lives, teach others to eat better and recognize the warning signs of heart disease. Having my family join in the walk was another plus.” NOTICE NNS to Participate in the “Great Southeast ShakeOut” The first simultaneous earthquake drill to be held in the Southeast is set for Thursday, Oct. 18 at 10:18 a.m. During this time, Newport News Shipbuilding will sound the shipyard whistle for one minute. Employees should “drop, cover and hold on” for the duration of the whistle blow. For more information, visit the O27 Yardnet website. The students who participated in the tour are very interested in pursuing manufacturing, construction, or engineering careers in the future. The class plans to revist the construction site next spring to see the sites’s progress. “During the tour, the students were able to physically see an active multi-project construction site with varying degrees of progress and activity,” said Rich Kutchen, lead construction engineer. “They were a very engaging group and asked many good questions about engineering and construction practices. We are looking forward to seeing them again next spring for another tour.” For more information about volunteering for Career Pathways events, contact Jennifer McClain (O44) at 688-8439 or Gordon Sproat (O44) at 688-3176. Ware Receives Security Star Award Julie Ware (O55) has been awarded the third quarter Security Star Award for 2012. The Security Department takes great pleasure in recognizing Ware for her outstanding contributions to security programs and awareness at Newport News Shipbuilding. Her work has included taking a lead role in resolution of deficiencies, communicating compliance changes between Security and Supply Chain Procurement departments, and aligning them with process changes for issuing requests for purchase orders. Sweitzer is responsible for maintaining technical data for more than 300,000 active parts, assuring that more than $1 billion of material purchased per year meets all requirements, and improving performance through better integration between engineering and hundreds of suppliers. The 10-year shipyard veteran has held several leadership roles of increasing responsibility in production engineering, manufacturing planning, process excellence and quality. Sweitzer also serves as board chairman for Starbase Victory, a non-profit private/public partnership with Portsmouth Public Schools that inspires grade school students to pursue opportunities in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). VCS to Presents Quality Craftsman of the Week Awards U.S. Navy Photo Interested in Becoming a Member of VERG? The Veteran’s Employee Resource Group (VERG), Newport News Shipbuilding’s newest Employee Resource Group, is open for membership. View an informational sheet about VERG. Shipbuilders interested in becoming a member of the group should fill out the application for membership form and send it to Marcia Downing (O36) via email or Yardmail (Bldg. 23-2, room 217). Each week in October, the Virginia-Class Submarine (VCS) Program will award a Quality Craftsman of the Week Award to a craftsman who demonstrates the characteristics of First Time Quality in their daily work. At the end of the month, one of the weekly winners will be selected for the Quality Craftsman of the Month. If you know of someone who fits the criteria, mention it to your foreman or supervisor and they will submit a nomination to VCS leadership. QUALITY MONTH SUBSAFE Program at Newport News Shipbuilding As part of our focus on Quality this month, we are highlighting Newport News Shipbuilding’s SUBSAFE Program this week. The program was formed following the tragic loss of 129 personnel during USS Thresher’s sea trials and was implemented to provide maximum reasonable assurance of hull integrity to preclude flooding, operability and integrity of critical systems to control and recover from a flooding casualty. The program also has responsibility for the Deep Submergence Systems – Scope of Certification (DSS-SOC) and the Fly-By-Wire Ship Control System certification boundaries. These programs are similar to the SUBSAFE program because they provide reasonable assurance that an accident will not occur, but if an accident were to occur that all personnel would be recovered safely. “The SUBSAFE Program stresses to always be on guard against ignorance, arrogance and complacency,” said Sean Coons, SUBSAFE program manager. “Despite our robust process of conducting inspections and audits, there are many operations where the only person who will ever know if your work was done correctly and per requirements is you. For every job you complete, ask yourself if you’d be willing to take that job on initial sea trials.” Capt. Mark Kelly speaks to NNS engineers at the Convention Center in Hampton. Photo by Chris Oxley Retired NASA Astronaut Visits the Shipyard On Sept. 27, Capt. Mark Kelly toured Newport News Shipbuilding and presented “Endeavour to Succeed” to the Engineering and Design and Nuclear Propulsion leadership team. Kelly is a retired NASA Astronaut, U.S. captain and naval aviator who flew combat missions during the Gulf War. He piloted his first space shuttle mission in 2001. Kelly’s final mission was aboard space shuttle Endeavor. CURRENTS p. 4 OCT 15 Cyber T.I.P.S. Mobile Phone Security Be careful what requests you allow on your mobile phone. If a new app is asking for permission to access address books, social media sites, and bank information, it probably doesn’t have the best interest at heart. Hackers can take the information they obtain and use it to steal bank account information, clone smart phones or deliver unwanted pay-per-view services with leaked device information. Give Blood. DISABILITY EMPLOYMENT AWARENESS MONTH Recognizing Diversity In 1945, in an effort to assist disable veterans, Congress designated the first week of October as National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week. In the 1970s, a historic shift in disability public policy occurred. For the first time, the exclusion of people with disabilities was viewed as discrimination. The efforts of disability activities led to significant changes in laws, such as the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act in 1990 and the designation of a full month to recognize the potential of America’s 30 million working-age people with disabilities.
