NNS Converts
to Natural Gas
As of Oct. 5, Newport News Shipbuilding has converted its
steam-generation plant from heavy fuel oil, also known as
Bunker C, to natural gas to improve safety and lower operating
costs and emissions to the environment.
The plant generates low-pressure steam to heat many of the
shipyard’s facilities, to provide process heat and to support
hotel services – including hot water, food preparation and galley
services – to the ships undergoing construction and overhaul.
“We started researching and evaluating alternative options about
four years ago with the goal of implementation by 2016,” said
Bill Cash-Robertson, environmental engineer. “Not only does
the conversion to natural gas make good business sense, it’s
more efficient, it’s cleaner, and it’s safer to operate.”
The old system, which included three 70-year-old boilers, burned
about 6 million gallons of heavy fuel oil last year, costing the
shipyard about $15 million. Plant Engineering Supervisor
Ken Allmon, a member of the shipyard’s energy management
team, said the new system will reduce greenhouse gases by 30
percent and save the shipyard several million dollars per year in

Keel Laying Ceremony
Newport News Shipbuilding leadership held a
recognition luncheon on Sept. 22 to recognize
three employees: Welder Donald Newsome
(X18), Welder Leon Walston (X18) and Sr.
Reproduction Clerk Antuan Barnes (O14),
for their contributions to the John F. Kennedy
(CVN 79) Keel Laying Ceremony that was held
Aug. 22. During the ceremony, Barnes sang the
national anthem, Newsome gave the invocation
and Walston welded Ship’s Sponsor Caroline
Kennedy’s initials onto a metal plate that will be
permantely affixed to the aircraft carrier.
At the luncheon, Ray Bagley, vice president
of Trades Operations, and Rob Hogan, vice
president of Manufacturing and Supply
Chain Management, congratulated the three
employees for a job well done.
“Being recognized was very encouraging and
uplifting,” said Barnes. “To know that the

Run the 2016 One City Marathon
As part of ongoing Health and Wellness initiatives, Newport News
Shipbuilding is once again the key sponsor for the 2016 One City
Marathon. The Communications Division is looking for shipbuilders and
teams who are running the marathon, relay or 8K, and who are interested
in participating in an Instagram campaign. If selected, shipbuilders will
receive a free registration for either of the events. Call Jeremy Bustin

Cohort 2 Completes E&D’s Rotational Program
On Oct. 2, 13 employees completed Engineering and Design’s (E&D)
Rotational Program. The participants are the second rotational group to
complete the two-year E&D program.
Tony Woodrum, a member of Cohort 2, said, “The rotation program
sheds light on how important it is for each of us to approach our jobs
with absolute dedication and commitment every day.”
The program, started by Jennifer Boykin, vice president of E&D, began
two-and-a-half years ago to increase awareness of various shipbuilding
value streams and to develop high achievers and future leaders for
Newport News Shipbuilding. The rotational program continues to grow
with four cohorts rotating every six months though different areas of
the company including: Augmented Reality, Common Integrated Work
Package, Test Engineering and Kesselring Site Operations in New York.
Currently, the program has 59 participants with the addition of the most
recent group – Cohort 6.
“This has been and will probably be the most fortunate and beneficial
opportunity of my career,” said Brent Woodhouse (E08).
Designer Candice McDougald, added, “I’m now a well-rounded
shipbuilder who stepped outside of her comfort zone to help build good
ships. I learned a ton along the way.”

The E&D Rotation Program was originally started for engineers and
designers, however, the program now has a few opportunities for other
salaried E&D individual contributors. Salaried employees interested in the
program should visit the E&D Rotation Program webpage. Approval from

Reminder: GERS Closing Oct. 16
Employees are reminded the last day to submit a
new expense report in GERS is Friday,
Oct. 16. To avoid late fees with employee’s JP
Morgan Corporate Credit Card, all credit card
transactions posted in GERS as of Oct. 11
should be “pre-popped” into an expense report
even if the travel is not until a later date. The
blackout period (Oct. 19 -29) will be used to
clear out the audit queue and give employees
an opportunity resubmit any returned expense
reports that need correction. Training sessions
will be offered in VASCIC Oct. 26-30. Employees
can sign up for training through the

Professional Development
Program Breakfast for Apprentices
On Sept. 18, the Professional Development
Program (PDP) apprentices gathered for
breakfast and to talk with Apprentice Facility
and engineering leadership about their
experience in combining Apprentice education
with the pursuit of an engineering degree. The
event was hosted by The Apprentice School and
Newport News Shipbuilding’s Engineering and
Design Division.
The program allows apprentices to gain
on-the-job engineering experience in the
manufacturing, construction, maintenance and
overhaul of some the most complex ships in
the world while earning a bachelor of science
in electrical or mechanical engineering. The
program currently hosts 40 students, with the
first three graduating in spring 2016.
“This rotation gives the apprentice experience
working with a variety of people, also allows
the apprentice to work with a variety of current
shipyard leaders who do their work well, and
to learn from their example,” Chief Engineer

The goal of PDP is to strengthen the bridge
between NNS’ industrial and technical
leadership. The seminars will continue to
occur quarterly to allow the students and
management team to remain connected.

Sponsor and First Lady Michelle Obama
christened submarine Illinois (SSN 786) at
General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton,
Conn. Oct. 10.
NNS President Matt Mulherin spoke during
the ceremony, “The Illinois has something
its sister ships don’t have- sponsorship by
Michelle Obama.” He said her “strength and
inspiring spirit,” will be instilled into the
submarine.
During her remarks, Obama said, “And all
of this truly is a testament to the talent
and skill of the folks who built this boat –
the folks from General Dynamics Electric
