Builders and Lady Builders
Christen New Gym with Wins
More than 500 people packed The Apprentice School’s new gymnasium this past
weekend to witness the fourth annual Martin Luther King Basketball Classic.
Throughout the weekend, the Builders and Lady Builders won four of the five
tournament games. A laser light show kicked off the inaugural event on Jan. 17 as
the starting line-up for both the Builders and Lady Builder basketball teams were
announced.
“It was a very nice turnout for the first game,” said Cynthia Allen White (O09).
“The Lady Builders set a fast-paced tempo and won by 60 points over their
opponent. Overall, the game was very exciting!” Continued on p. 5

Kesselring Employees Hold
“Chili Cook-Off Challenge”
Kesselring employees made the holidays
a bit brighter by holding a “Chili CookOff Challenge” in November to support
Give a Child Christmas Inc., a non-profit
organization that sponsors local families.
During the challenge, 16 competitors
went head-to-head with their best chili
recipes. Participants donated money
to their favorite recipe and at the
conclusion of the event, the recipe with
the most money won. Mike Schietzelt
(E91) was declared the 2013 winner.
In honor of his winning recipe, he was
presented with a “Chili Bucket” trophy.
“The program gives employees an
opportunity to pull together for a great
cause,” said Nikole Bennett (O96).
“Everyone at the Kesselring Site is
very supportive of efforts and are so
generous. I’m thankful to work with
employees that are so caring.”
In addition to the “Chili Cook-Off
Challenge,” Kesselring employees also
Pictured (L to R): Michael Hickam, Judy Kelley, Rob Colangelo, Sheena Johnson, Kevin Finn, Michael Schietzeld,
contest winner, Andrew Collar and Daniel Stachnick.
held a series of events throughout the year to raise money for the charity. Other
events included ice cream and bake sales. All of the efforts combined were able to
provide funds to support more than 35 children in the West Milton, NY area.
Give Blood. Save a Life.
The American Red Cross is in need of blood donations. The bloodmobile
comes to Newport News Shipbuilding several times a month. To see how you
can help, turn to page 5 of Currents to view upcoming bloodmobile dates,
times and locations or contact Brenda Roth (O18) at 380-3011.
Twenty Foremen

Program
On Dec. 11, 20 foremen were recognized
for completing the requirements of the
Foreman’s Qualification Standard (FQS)
program.
The event, hosted by the Management
Development Center, recognized all
foremen who completed the program
in 2013. Guest speakers Ken Mahler,
vice president of Navy Programs,
and Danny Hunley, vice president of
Operations, praised the foremen for their
accomplishment.
Completion of the FQS program
involves mentoring and coaching by
each of the participants’ general foreman
in all areas associated with being a
foreman and successfully demonstrating
their knowledge before a proficiency
board made up of general foremen.
Front row (L to R): Michael Paxton, Stephen Bonneau, Sarah Gentry, David Putnam and Charles Bell. Second row
(L to R): Christa West, Joshua Flint, Katy Deese, Teresa Mullen, James Gilliam, Elwood Jackson and Tom West.
Back row (L to R): Chris Wolford, Nicholas Perry, Bobby Farmer, Wayne Horrell, Michael Shortt, Steve Norman and

Builders and Lady Builders Christen New Gym with Wins
Continued from p. 1 ... X11 Trade Director Joe Sabel was proud to see the large crowd. “You can look around and tell that
everyone is thrilled to be here,” said Sabel. “To see the maroon and gold and the smile on everyone’s face as they walk through
the new facility is great.”
In addition, The Apprentice School held a special ceremony between the Lady Builder and Builder games to honor the past
Apprentice School national championship teams and individuals. During this time, championship banners were unveiled to a
roaring ovation from the crowd. Following the banner unveiling, senior apprentice Ben Hunter, along with golf coaches Joey
Maben and B.J. Maben, were presented with national championship rings to commemorate Hunter winning the first place title
at the 2010 and 2013 U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships.
Danny Hunley, vice president of Operations, attended the games. “I’m really glad to have attended the first game in the new
facility,” said Hunley. “I saw a lot of great players on the court and a bench full of great students with a grade point average of
over 3.0 – I couldn’t be more proud of these Apprentice School athletes. Go Builders!”
The next home game will be on Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. For additional information on Builder Athletics, visit www.gobuilders.com.
