NNS Installs Enterprise’s
Anchor on Abraham Lincoln
Although the aircraft carrier USS Enterprise
(CVN 65) is scheduled to be decommissioned in
2016, its legacy lives on, and so does one of its
anchors. Newport News Shipbuilding recently
installed one of Enterprise’s anchors on younger
carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72).
nuclear-powered aircraft carrier is being put to
rest before final disposal.

Encouraging
Students to Think
“Outside the Box”
More than 15 Career Pathways volunteers
assisted Sedgefield Elementary students with
“The Global Cardboard Challenge” on Sept. 29.
Students were divided into teams, given
cardboard and tasked to use their imagination
to design and build a cardboard arcade game.
Career Pathways volunteers assisted the
students in their design and creations. Some
of the students’ designs included skee-ball machines, cars, basketball hoops and ring tosses.
“It was an incredible experience to watch kids
from kindergarten to the fifth grade come up
with an idea and assist them in executing it,”
said Denise Thomasson (E21/E02), Career
Pathways volunteer. “There’s no limit to
imagination at that age which is inspiring and
exactly what we need to foster in the younger
generation in order to have innovation and
technology advancements in the future.”
as a team, utilizing limited supplies provided by their teachers,” he said. “Students constructed a
clubhouse with a periscope to detect intruders, a bowling alley with retractable pins and a ‘disco’
robot dressed with flair reminiscent of the 70’s scene to name a few creations within a 45 minute
time frame.”
John Banks (E73) agreed. “I was truly amazed
at the students’ abilities to create and innovate,

During the overhaul process, Newport News shipbuilders’
inspections found that one of the Lincoln’s anchors needed to
be replaced, so shipbuilders swapped out the old anchor for
one of Enterprise’s. The anchor, cast in 1962 and weighing in at
30 tons, is an exact twin of Lincoln’s other, and much younger,
anchor. With two working anchors, the sailors aboard Lincoln
will be able to test the carrier’s anchor-lift system during sea
trials, scheduled for 2016.
“The legacy of Enterprise will live on in her sailors, her
shipbuilders and now in the anchor aboard Lincoln,” said
Chris Miner, vice president of In-Service Aircraft Carriers.
“The ships are reaching important milestones in their lives;
Lincoln will finish her mid-life RCOH, and Enterprise will finish
her inactivation, both in 2016. With this anchor, both ships
will be linked, and Lincoln will carry Enterprise’s spirit as it
returns to the fleet.”

The S.M. Stoller
Corp. Awarded $2M
Contract
The S.M. Stoller Corp. has been awarded a $2
million contract by Consolidated Nuclear
Security, LLC, to upgrade a pump and
treatment system at the National Nuclear
Security Administration/Department of Energy
Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas.
The contract covers 300 days of work Stoller will
do to upgrade a system that extracts and treats
contaminated groundwater.
The Pantex Plant is charged with maintaining
the safety, security and effectiveness of the
nation’s nuclear weapons stockpile. Work done
at the site includes nuclear weapons dismantlement; the development, testing and fabrication
of high explosive components; and interim
storage and surveillance of plutonium pits.
“Stoller has provided environmental services
at the Pantex Plant for more than 15 years,”
said Pete Diakun, vice president of Energy
Programs. “We are very pleased to have this
opportunity to continue to support the site and
to be a part of this community.”
October is National Cyber
Security Awareness Month
This year’s theme for Cyber Security
Awareness Month at Newport News
Shipbuilding is “Need-To-Know” (NTK). In the
coming months, you will hear a lot about NTK
and your role in protecting sensitive business,
customer, and employee information, including
an initiative to clean up NNS collaborative
network drives. NTK describes the access
restrictions of sensitive data to only those that
need it to perform their job.
YOU are responsible for protecting NNS’
sensitive information. Always ask yourself the
following questions when handling NNS
sensitive information:
• Who really needs to see this information?
• Do they need this information to perform
job duties?
• How long do they need to access this
information?
Visit the InfoSec website for more information.
Manufacturing Division Holds First Annual
Safety Fall Classic
On Sept. 14, the Manufacturing Division hosted the First Annual Safety Fall Classic golf
tournament at Cypress Creek Golfers’ Club in Smithfield. The event raised $3,500 to support Hope
for the Warriors, an organization whose mission is to enhance the quality of life for post-9/11
service members, their families and the fallen who have sustained physical and psychological
wounds in the line of duty.
“Since we build the best vessels in the world to support our troops and to protect our country, we
thought it was a perfect fit to raise money to support our wounded veterans and their families
when they return home,” Manufacturing Division’s Safety Champion Bob Conway Jr. “When we
first started planning this event more than six months ago, we expected to raise $1,500. Due to the
outpouring of generosity and support from our shipbuilders, business contacts and the hosting golf
club, we more than doubled the donation. This was a rewarding experience for everyone involved.”

NNS to Recognize National Quality Month
October is National Quality Month. This year,
Newport News Shipbuilding’s Quality and
Process Excellence Division will highlight
examples of quality efforts from Supply Chain
Management, Manufacturing, Engineering and
Design and Operations that have resulted in
“Excellence in Action” awards. This week, the
spotlight will be on SCM.
For USS Abraham Lincoln’s (CVN 72) refueling
and complex overhaul (RCOH), Newport News
Shipbuilding subcontracted all 12 of Lincoln’s
propulsion shafts and four propellers to a
supplier for refurbishment.
To ensure success, NNS’ Supply Chain Procurement Department and Propulsion Plant
Engineering met with CVN 72’s Construction
Team and SUPSHIPNN to review lessons
learned from previous RCOH to determine the
best path forward.
“In previous RCOHs, NNS, the Navy, and the
supplier have had to communicate through
emails, conference calls and occasional
meetings onsite at the supplier’s location,” said
Jack Lemmon, Supply Chain Procurement
manager. “Though this process worked, we
knew that we could increase first-time quality
by having representatives from each group onsite to oversee, monitor progress, ensure timely
contract updates and funding, and approve final
inspections on work performed by the supplier.”
So for CVN 72’s RCOH, each team sent representatives to work on-site at the supplier
location. The effort resulted in the timely return
of the shafts and propellers back to NNS in time
for key construction installments.
Lemmon added, “In the future, this model will
provide a useful model for coordinating efforts
across multiple disciplines both within NNS
and the supply base.”

VCS Program to Recognize
Craftsmen for Demonstrating
First-Time Quality
In honor of Quality Month, the Virginia-Class
Submarine (VCS) Program will recognize craftsmen
each week throughout the month of October who
consistently demonstrate first-time quality in their
daily work.
VCS craftsmen can nominate fellow shipbuilders
for the award. To nominate a shipbuilder, craftsmen
should give their nomination to their supervisor.
Supervisors and lead general foreman should submit
all entries to Willie Hayes, VCS director, or Steve
DeBusk (K62).
At the end of October, VCS management will select
one of the weekly winners as the “Quality Craftsman
of the Month.”

Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) will
conduct their Phase I SUBSAFE Certification Audit
of PCU John Warner (SSN 785) the week of Oct. 6.
This is one of several major milestones in the process
of submarine certification – one that will provide
NAVSEA the opportunity to examine records and the
ship to validate the SUBSAFE material condition.
The certification process will provide confidence that
the ship will be ready to commence fast cruise and
sea trials early next year. For additional information,
