NNS Lays Keel for Indiana - Newport News Shipbuilding
5 | 18 | 2015 A weekly publication of Newport News Shipbuilding NNS Lays Keel for Indiana With more than 500 guests looking into a submarine unit as the ceremony backdrop, Newport News Shipbuilding celebrated the keel laying of Virginia-class submarine Indiana (SSN 789) on Saturday. The submarine’s sponsor is Diane Donald, wife of retired Adm. Kirkland Donald. As the keel authenticator, Donald chalked her initials onto a metal plate, which were welded into the plate by NNS welder Heather Johnson. The plate will be permanently affixed to the submarine, serving as a symbol of Donald’s enduring relationship with the shipbuilders, the submarine and the crew. “I am confident that the shipbuilders of Newport News and their partners at Electric Boat, along with the hundreds of suppliers that provide equipment and craftsmanship unmatched in the world, will extend their legacy of delivering the very best ship,” she said. Ceremony participants included Vice Adm. Michael J. Connor, commander, Submarine Forces; Stephen Trautman, deputy director, Naval Nuclear Propulsion Program; Matt Mulherin, president of NNS; and Jeffrey S. Geiger, president of General Dynamics Electric Boat. Connor stressed the quality and importance of the Virginia-class program at NNS and Electric Boat. “We talk every six months now about yet another milestone in a record of producing submarines ahead of schedule, under cost, highest quality ever, as if it were easy,” Connor said. “It’s not easy. And as we go forward, if we’re going to continue to do that, your effort here needs the support of the entire country in terms of steady predictable budgets.” The ceremony took place on Armed Forces Day, a holiday established by President Harry Truman for citizens to thank U.S. military... Career Development and Education Expo The Career and Professional Development Department (O44) invites all employees to attend this year’s Career Development and Education Expo from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1 in Bldg. 520-6. During the expo, representatives from the following organizations will be present to speak with employees: • Employee Development Library • NNS Night School • Career Pathways Mulherin highlighted the mindset and commitment that can be found among the Navy, shipbuilder and supplier team that builds Virginia-class submarines. “Together, we are delivering these boats ahead of schedule and under budget while continuing to find new and more innovative ways to build them, and we do it with the highest safety and quality standards,” Mulherin said. “The Virginia-class program continues to be hailed as the nation’s best shipbuilding program, and Indiana will continue that winning legacy.” Indiana will be the 16th Virginia-class submarine and the eighth submarine to be delivered by Newport News and the sixth of the Block III submarines. Construction began in September 2012, with 4,000 NNS shipbuilders contributing. The submarine is about 48 percent complete and on track for delivery in 2017. NNS shipbuilders place the SPS-48 air search radar to the top of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) island on May 6. The AN/SPS-48 is a longrange, three-dimensional air search radar that allows for 360 degrees of coverage and the ability to detect the height of a target above the surface of the water. The radar system was deployed in the 1960s as the primary air search sensor for anti-aircraft warships and is the predecessor of the AEGIS system used currently on other Navy ships. “Installing the radar on time is one of the most important measures taken in the refueling and complex overhaul process,” said Lt. Loudon Westgard, a division officer assigned to the Combat Systems Department. “This The SPS-48 antenna is now the second antenna to be Employees Attend Environmental Symposium Newport News Shipbuilding employees attended the 26th Annual Environment Virginia Symposium at Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, Virginia March 31 - April 2. The annual symposium is the largest environmental conference in Virginia and brings together more than 600 professionals from across the state for a chance to network and to share solutions and technologies that may help solve complex environmental challenges. During the conference, NNS shared information about challenges to meet regulatory requirements in the shipbuilding industry and NNS’ Environmental programs in place to meet those challenges. Over the next few months the Combat Systems Department along with Newport News Shipbuilding will continue to install additional antennas for navigational, communications and aircraft landing functions. “Our goal as a department is to get the equipment back on board and return the Lincoln back as an operational warship,” Westgard said. “The next few months will be a crucial time for us as the ship starts to bring the systems online and begin the testing process.” 2 4 CURRENTS 5 | 18 | 2015 DATEBOOK MAY 19 The “Spear and Gear” Toastmasters Club will meet from 4:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Bldg. 812-2 conference room. If so, consider the following camps that Newport News Shipbuilding employees will be involved in through the Career Pathways program. Read more information about each camp below. Peninsula K-Next Imagineering and Creative Technology The Hover Games Date: June 24-27 Age: Rising 7-10th grade students Cost: $66 Date: July 20-25 Age: Rising 7-10th grade students Cost: $77 Date: August 10-16 Age: 8-11th grade students Cost: $88 The camp is designed to inspire the next generation of inventors, engineers, manufacturers and entrepreneurs. Camp participants will explore computer numerical controlled programming and machines, plan and perfect a family of marketable products, visit automated manufacturing companies, compete in a “friendly” manufacturing competition, discover the world of the entrepreneur, while all the time emphasizing product creation, problem solving, critical thinking and team building. The camp provides students an opportunity to explore the world of entrepreneurship from product concept to prototyping using in-depth CAD (computer assisted design) programs and 3D printing machines! Students develop a production plan and a business plan and have to prepare a presentation. On the final day of the camp, student “companies” are required to present their products to an “Angel Investors” team of judges in an effort to obtain funding for their product, similar to the “Shark Tank” TV program. This camp will focus on the building, programming and flying of a “quadcopter”, to include the possible design and manufacturing of parts using CAD and 3D printers. Besides visiting state-of-the-art companies operating in the world of unmanned aerial systems (drones!) - to include NASA Langley - students will have the opportunity to develop their skills to compete in the camp’s final competition, a “rodeo”. Visit www.tncc.edu/workforce from a home computer or contact Bobby Perkins at 865-3122 for additional information about each camp. 5 | 18 | 2015 CURRENTS 35 HOW DO I VERIFY MY DEPENDENTS FOR HII BENEFITS COVERAGE?
