This will be our final communication bulletin for the 2011-2012
school year. It has been a great
year and I wish to congratulate
the students on all of the great
successes that they have played a
role in, this past year.
A heartfelt thanks goes out to
staff, students and our community for the continuous participation in, contributions to, and
support of school life at SHS. It
has been another tremendous
year in so many ways in, and out,
of the classroom. In the music
department, over $20 000. was
raised through a 4Cs Foundation
grant ($10 000), a Musicounts/
Caras grant ($10 000), and a
Department of Education Advanced Music Grant ($1 000).
These monies were used to create
the Bach to Music Project which
involved 200 school and community musicians and to purchase
needed instruments for the band.
The school band will culminate
the year taking Beethoven, Bach,
and the Beatles on a tour of
schools in Nova Scotia and New
Brunswick at the end of May.
The drama department had a
successful show at the Seventh
Annual Playwrights cabaret collaborating with the Tourism 12
class who also was responsible
for assisting in successfully hosting the Second Annual Parent
Appreciation evening held May
2. From the Gay Straight Alliance which celebrated several
successful events with the student body including a diversity
awareness campaign over Christmas and peaceful, community
building in the fall, and through
an ongoing awareness campaign
to the many endeavours of the
Students’ Council and sports
teams which are too numerous to
mention, our students, supported
by staff, have been busy.
Over the next 5-6 weeks we will
be extremely busy with the many
celebrations that take place as we
close this school year. Prom is
coming up as are many events
leading to graduation. Academic
and athletic celebrations are both
in the next couple of weeks.
Time is flying by!
For students who will be back
with us next year, please ensure
that you have met with your

The Sackville High School Girl's Field Hockey team, worked extremely hard the past few months, finishing the
regular season with a 6 wins and 4 loses record. They placed fifth in the standings, and played an outstanding
game in the quarter-finals. A job well done goes out to all members of the team, and a special congratulations to Khayla Laing and Hilary Gabriel, for making the league All-Star team.
Recognize What Bullying Is
Bullying is about human relationships, power and control. Bullying differs from “normal” childhood conflict. The attached
chart was developed to help build an understanding of the differences between bullying behaviour and “normal” conflict or
inappropriate behaviour.
If you suspect your child is a victim of bullying, you should:
•
Listen carefully to what he/she says about the bullying.
•
Be sympathetic and take the problem seriously.
•
Assure your child that it is not his or her fault.
•
Tell your child that she or he will not have to face it alone.
•
Discourage your child from getting revenge.
•
Do not promise to keep it a secret. Anonymous reports are hard to fix.
•
Tell the principal or a staff member.
Bullying is intentional, hurtful and repeated behaviour that intimidates, threatens harm, or victimizes another person to make the victim feel weaker.
Some of the ways bullying behaviours differ from inappropriate behaviours are:

Online Safety – A Family Affair!
Having a family agreement around online activity is a good idea. It’s a great way
for families to work together on how to be safe, wise and responsible while online.
Here are some guidelines to help start the conversation! (It is always a good idea
to put computers that your children use in areas where access and supervision are
easily managed.)
• Always get parental permission before giving out any personal information online.
This includes your name, gender, telephone number, home or e-mail address,
location of your school, your parents' work address, email addresses or telephone
numbers, their credit card number information, and pictures of you or members of
your family.
• When online always use an online name or a name that prevents other people
online from knowing anything about you.
• When creating a password make one up that is hard for someone else to guess
but easy for you to remember. Never reveal it to anyone (except your parents or a
trusted adult) -not even your best friend.
• Show an adult any message or website that contains derogatory content.
• Never arrange to meet a friend you have met online unless a parent or an adult that you trust will be going with you.
• Ask an adult first before opening any e-mail, files, links, pictures or games from people that you do not know or do not
trust.
• Check the source of the information you find online to see if it is true or not, and confirm it with a parent or teacher.
• Practice responsible online behaviour – think before you send any messages to other people. Ask yourself, “Is this a
message I would like to receive?”
• Make sure you leave any filtering software your parents have placed on the computer unaltered; unless you have your
parents’ permission.
• If you are being threatened or harassed online tell an adult you trust and leave the online area or stop the online activity
you are involved in immediately.
HOST A STUDENT FROM SPAIN
OPPORTUNITY TO HOST A SPANISH STUDENT
The International Services Department of the Halifax Regional School Board is excited to welcome a
group of visiting high school students in Grades 10-12 from Spain and Colombia this Fall 2012.
Students will be arriving in September and October 2012 and will stay for periods of 4-8 weeks. Their
purpose in visiting Canada is to learn English and to share in Canadian culture.
We are looking for families who would be interested in opening their home to host a student. This is a
great opportunity for your family to experience and share culture first hand. Your family would be
matched up with student and they would participate in your daily family routines.
• Host Families receive $525 tax free every month to cover the cost of food and the occasional transportation expense
• Ongoing support is provided through by an experienced Homestay Coordinator
• Students are provided with international phone cards
• Students are provided with Medical Insurance for the duration of their stay
•
Several cultural activities and day trips are organized for students during their program
Students have studied English in their home country, so they do come with a working knowledge of the language
For more you more information or to find out how to become involved, please contact
Charity Semple, Program Coordinator at csemple@hrsb.ns.ca or 902-225-5938
