Featured in Prima November 2005 Point-edge wrap SIZE Approximately 50 x 183cm. MATERIALS Thirteen 50g balls of Debbie Bliss cathay in Purple 12. Pair of 3¾mm knitting needles. Call 01535 664222 for yarn and book stockist details. TENSION 21 sts and 38 rows to 10cm square over garter st using 3¾mm needles. NOTES The stitches for the wrap are made using the thumb method of casting on (see below) whereas the 6 sts which are cast on for the inward-slanting points are made by looping the yarn around the left thumb and slipping this loop onto the right hand needle. TO MAKE With 3¾mm, cast on 105 sts using the thumb method of casting on. 1st and every RS row Knit. 2nd row K97, skpo, [yo, skpo] 3 times. 104 sts. 4th row K 96, skpo, [yo, skpo] 3 times. 103 sts. 6th row K 95, skpo, [yo, skpo] 3 times. 102 sts. 8th row K 94, skpo, [yo, skpo] 3 times. 101 sts. 10th row K 93, skpo, [yo, skpo] 3 times. 100 sts. 12th row K 92, skpo, [yo, skpo] 3 times. 99 sts. Do not turn, but cast on 6 sts. 105 sts. These 12 rows form garter st with inward-slanting pointed edging. Rep these 12 rows 28 times more but, on the last row, do not cast on 6 sts. Knit 1 row. Now work outward-slanting pointed edging as follows: 1st row K94, [yo, k2tog] twice, yo, k1. 100 sts. 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th and 10th rows Knit. 3rd row K95, [yo, k2tog] twice, yo, k1. 101 sts. 5th row K96, [yo, k2tog] twice, yo, k1. 102 sts. 7th row K97, [yo, k2tog] twice, yo, k1. 103 sts. 9th row K98, [yo, k2tog] twice, yo, k1. 104 sts. 11th row K99, [yo, k2tog] twice, yo, k1. 105 sts. 12th row Cast off 6 sts loosely purlwise, k to end. 99 sts. The last 12 rows form garter st with outward-slanting pointed edging. Rep these 12 rows 28 times more, but on the last row, cast off all sts purlwise. Darn in all yarn ends neatly. THUMB METHOD OF CASTING ON 1 Make a slip knot about 1.5 – 2m from the end of the ball, place this on a needle and pull firmly to make the first stitch. 2 Holding the needle in your right hand, loop the short end of yarn round your left thumb and grip with fingers as shown. 3 Place the point of the needle under the loop of yarn which is round your thumb, keeping the main yarn over your right index finger. 4 Bring the yarn from the main ball under then over the needle, before bringing point of needle through the loop that’s on your thumb. 5 Tighten the stitch on the needle and loop the yarn round your thumb ready for the next stitch.
