Finnish and Swedish players are presented with a unique opportunity represent their country in two home world championships in a row. Last year both hosts were left without medals and both are eager make up for that in 2013. Because of last year’s results, the pressure is on for both hosts to win the championship trophy in the marvelous Stockholm Globe Arena on the 19th of May. Jukka Jalonen, the head coach of the Finnish Lions, is however no stranger to pressure because of the immense media attention in Finland. This year’s tournament will be the last for Jalonen, who has been at the team’s helm from 2008. Jukka has had a huge impact for not only the men’s national team, but for Finnish ice hockey as a whole ever since starting his term. I want to thank Jukka for everything he has done for Finnish ice hockey and I hope that he can end his tenure with the team on a high note with his second World Championship title. I wish all teams the best of luck, and may the best team win! kalervo kummola President Finnish Ice Hockey Association 3 2013 iiHF iCe HoCKeY WorlD CHAMPionsHiP In last year’s gold medal game the dominant Russian team claimed the gold by beating Slovakia. During the final medal ceremony we saw one of the most touching moments in World Championship history when Slovakia’s captain Zdeno Chara dedicated the silver medal to Pavol Demitra, who died in the tragic Yaroslavl plane crash in 2011. GreeTinGs GreeTinGs FroM THe PresiDenT oF THe FinnisH iCe HoCKeY AssoCiATion A TAle oF TWo CiTies – PArT ii Both hosts were disappointed last year by the Czech Republic as they knocked out Sweden in the quarterfinals and Finland in the bronze game. Slovakia played an incredible tournament as well coming home with the silver medals after being defeated by Russia in the final. In the medal ceremony, only few eyes remained dry when captain Zdeno Chara accepted Slovakia’s second place trophy. After receiving the trophy, the Boston Bruins all-star defenseman pointed at the heavens in memory of his good friend Pavol Demitra, who we lost in the Yaroslavl plane tragedy, while wearing his jersey. Chara was selected as the best defenseman of the tournament alongside teammate Jan Laco, who was the best goaltender of the tournament, and Evgeni Malkin, the best forward. Malkin won the scoring race with 19 points in 10 games. Finland’s top scorer was Minnesota Wild’s star forward Mikko Koivu with 11 points in ten games. Koivu played on the top line for the Finns with Valtteri Filppula and Jussi Jokinen, who were 2nd and 3rd in scoring after Koivu. This year Finnish head coach Jukka Jalonen will have to do without this trio of players and will have to look to different players to take the wheel. One of these players could be former Chicago Blackhawk Petri kontiola, who won the KHL playoff scoring race with 19 points in 25 games. The Seinäjoki, Finland native was a part of last year’s team behind Koivu and co., but this year it could be Kontiola’s time to shine. 5 2013 iiHF iCe HoCKeY WorlD CHAMPionsHiP The 2012 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship was a historic tournament because it was the first world championship tournament with two host countries. This year’s tournament will be equally unique as players in Finland and Sweden will have the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent their countries two years in a row at home.
