From The Headmaster
Starting school or moving up a year can be quite a daunting prospect for some children
They can be thrown out of their comfort zone by new classrooms, teachers and
expectations and all of this can sometimes lead to a drop in self-esteem and confidence.
Children with healthy self-esteem and self-confidence learn more, achieve more and are
generally happier than those with low confidence levels. However, building children’s and
young people’s confidence is complex. Great confidence-builders use a number of
approaches that impact on how children’ think, how they feel and what they can do. Parent
educator Michael Grose has the following advice and offers 5 practical strategies that you
can use to build real self-confidence in children of all ages:
1. Model confident thinking
Children soak up the language, thinking and behaviour of those closest to them in their
environment. Parents and teachers play a part in modelling confident thinking and
behaviour especially when it comes to tackling new activities. In particular, let children
hear positive self-talk when you tackle something new. They should hear something like
“I’ll have a go at this. If I don’t do so well then I can try again tomorrow.” This is far more
effective than “I’m no good at this. I’ll probably muck it up.” What story are you creating
that your children will copy and pass on?
2. Focus on effort & improvement
Current thinking shows that people who believe that they can increase their intelligence
through effort and challenge actually get smarter and do better over time in school, work,
and life. One way to develop this 'growth mindset' is to focus your language on effort and
improvement rather than on the results of what children do. By linking success with effort
you are teaching them success comes from something other than pure ability, talents or
smarts.
3. Praise their strategies
While effort is key for achievement, it's not the be all and end all. Children need a broad
repertoire of approaches – not just sheer effort – to learn and improve. Focus your
language on better and smarter ways of improving. Comments such as “That was a smart
idea to tackle the hardest task while you were fresh!” and “You recognised the first few
steps were the most important but then after that you were right” are descriptive
statements that have significant instructional value for children.
4. Develop self-help skills from an early age
A child’s self-esteem comes as a result of his or her successes and accomplishments. The
most important competencies to build confidence are basic self-help skills. These form
the building blocks upon which other competencies such as organisational skills and many
social skills are formed.
5. Give them real responsibility
From a young age, start giving children responsibility for some aspects of their lives. By
giving children responsibility we are sending a powerful message that we think they are
capable. Also they are learning the skills necessary to be independent.

at the swimming carnival and special thank you to the parents who entered the parent
relay - it was the most competitive parent race we have seen in years!

Band
Once again, we are calling for any Primary musicians
(Years 3 - 6 only) who would like to be in the band (which also
includes orchestral instruments). Boys must have their own
instruments [ apart from the piano! ] and be taking music
lessons outside of school. Boys who cannot play a tuned
instrument are welcome to join the percussion section. This
year, we are going to trial band practice before school on a
Wednesday [ from 8 – 8.45 ] We will let you know when the
first practice will be.
If your son is interested, please ask him to see Ms Gershon.
Raffle Winners
As part of our behaviour program, classes work on a Traffic Light System. The idea is for the boys to remain on
Green each day, and if they do, are rewarded with a raffle
ticket. At Friday’s assembly, all the raffle tickets from the
week are placed in a container and a winner from each
class is drawn.
The winner receives an ice block from Mr Dicks.

Mind Quest
This is open to boys from years 1-6 who are gifted and
talented or above average ability with special interests. It will
be held at St George Girls HS on Saturday 2nd and Sunday 3rd
April from 9.30-3.30.
The application forms are available from the office. The closing
date for applications is Friday 4th March.

Pick up times
Please adhere to the following pick up times to minimize traffic
congestion. A reminder that you are not permitted to get out of
your car in the pick up area either side of the crossing. If
you wish to do so, you must find a park in the adjoining streets.
There is strictly no parking in the pick up area. If your son isn’t
waiting for you, you will need to move on and go around the
block. Do not put your dons bag in the boot of your car as that
means a further delay while he gets it out.

The bus will not be back at school before 3.45, so please do
not arrive before that time.
Morning Procedures
The doors open at 8am when supervision begins and close at
9am, after which if you are running late you must come to the
glass door in Cook Street, come upstairs and sign your son in.
At 8am, boys wait in the hall until 8.10 when they go to the
park to play. On Mondays and Fridays [ Assembly days] the
boys take their bags to their class areas. On the other days,
the boys are not permitted upstairs and leave their bags in the
hall.
The school day starts promptly at 8.45am. The arrival time of
all late boys is entered into the record of attendance.

Swimming Carnival Results
This year we have decided not to publish the results of the
Swimming Carnival which was held last week. This means it
will be a pleasant surprise for most boys when their name is
called out at Speech Night at the conclusion of the year.
This will also be the case with the athletics cup winners.
The swimming team squad for South Harbour and IPSHA
are in the Chronicle today. The Quad swimming squad will
be announced at a later date.

OZ Tag your it!
A Senior moment!
Year Six being presented with their Year Six Senior ties in
Monday’s assembly
Last weekend Fergus Dominy, Max Roche and Hamish
Witten from Year 3 were at Coffs Harbour playing in the
NSW Oz-Tag championships. This is a huge competition
with 5,000 people attending.
They were selected for the under 9 Sydney Roosters
representative team that was drawn from boys across the
Easts district. The squad formed 2 months ago but most other teams had been training for 5 months. Never the less, all
the team trained hard and were up for the challenge.
Over Friday and Saturday the team were undefeated – winning 5 games and drawing 1 against a top seeded team.
They were gritty, tight and exciting games. The team performed way above expectations with Fergus, Max and
Hamish all contributing strongly.
Having qualified for the finals they played again on
Sunday in a thrilling match that went into sudden death extra
time. The ‘junior’ Roosters looked like they had scored the
winning try but it is was ruled a ‘simultaneous tag’ and
disallowed. Eventually their opponents managed to break
away and score to defeat our boys and bring our campaign
to an end.
All in all it was such a fantastic weekend and our boys came
away as part of a NSW top 4 team. They learnt a lot over the
2 months of representative training and have many
memorable experiences from playing in the competition.
They will no doubt bring these skills to CPS Rugby!
