workshop will help you determine how many pets you can potentially
place, based on your population, and will offer a plan to move your
adoption program into the stratosphere by re-examining the “facts”
behind adoption.

community, Sara will review the many benefits, resources and services
that Petfinder offers members. This will be followed by a few tips and

SOCIAL ANIMALS: USING WEB 2.0 AND SOCIAL
MEDIA TO INCREASE ADOPTIONS AND RECRUIT
VOLUNTEERS, MEMBERS AND DONORS
Every dog has its own story of how it came to the shelter. Some
may have been abandoned, some were relinquished due to normal
doggie behaviors that the owner did not anticipate and others, wandering the streets or beaches around our country, may have never had the
benefit of being loved by humans. One thing they all have in common is
that they are homeless and need training because behavioral wellness is
just as important as training for good manners. Pia will go over various
techniques and goals for a successful training program as well as give
tips on creating a program for those dogs that unfortunately are housed
for long periods of time – longer than we would like to see.

volunteers? How can you increase adoptions? This seminar will teach
you the basics of social media so that your organization can utilize
these tools to benefit the animals in your program. You’ll leave the
presentation with five easy steps for developing your own social
media plan.

SARA KENT, PETFINDER.COM
Sara is the director of shelter outreach for Petfinder.com. She has a degree in
psychology and many years of varied animal welfare experience, including 11 with
Petfinder. Sara devotes her time to creating content for www.petfinder.com/admin
as well as identifying and implementing ways for Petfinder to help the animal
welfare community. Senior pets, FIV+ cats and special needs animals have a special
place in her heart. Sara works from her home in Montclair, N.J., which she shares
with her husband and stepdaughter, a backyard cat colony, two indoor FIV+ cats
and a tarantula named 3.
EMILY GARMAN,THESOCIALANIMAL.COM
Emily has been working in graphic design for almost 20 years and Web site creation
for 10 years. She holds degrees in journalism and electronic media from the
University of Oklahoma and has consulted with clients all over the United
States. A passion for teaching and explaining social media to mystified beginners
(and for rescuing dogs and cats) has resulted in her being requested to present
workshops on social media and Web communications at several national and
regional conferences, including the HSUS Animal Care Expo and HSUS Taking
Action for Animals. Her Web site, The Social Animal (www.thesocialanimal.com),
is dedicated specifically to helping animal welfare workers (volunteers, shelter
staffers, board members, admin staff and do-it-yourselfers) understand and use
social media to further their lifesaving efforts. Emily has four dogs, Oliver, Rocky,
Champ and Friendly, who make her laugh every day.You can contact Emily at

DR. STEVE NOTARO, PHD, UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
Steve has over 20 years experience in animal welfare as an executive director
and a board member of a humane society and national groups. Steve is currently
a professor at the University of Illinois, teaching strategic planning, statistics and
ethics. Steve is a former SAWA board member, cofounder and president of the
Illinois Animal Welfare Federation, member of the AHA shelter advisory board and
advisor to the National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy. Most recently,
Steve was involved in a research study on the impact of pit bulls on shelters.
PIA SILVANI, ST. HUBERT’S ANIMAL WELFARE CENTER
Pia is director of training and behavior at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center
in Madison, N.J. Pia writes behavior articles for the shelter’s newsletter and
library. She lectures on animal behavior internationally and routinely consults
with various shelters around the world. She is past vice president of the
Association of Pet Dog Trainers and Certification Council for Professional
Dog Trainers and now the Secretary of the APDT Foundation. She is also on
the advisory committee of the Animal Rescue League of Boston and consults
with various organizations around the company to enhance and improve their
training and behavior departments. Pia has been involved in rescue work for over
20 years. She shares her home with husband, Marty, as well as their three Belgian
Tervurens. In her spare time, she and her dogs successfully compete in obedience,
Rally-O, agility and K9 Noseworks.

onto US-12E toward I-90 Alt/Baraboo. Go 23.6 miles. Turn right onto WI-78. Go 8 miles. Turn
left onto US-14 E/WI-78 S. Go 2.4 miles. Turn right onto Mills St/WI-78/CR-F. Continue on WI-78
approx. 24 miles and through a roundabout. Turn right onto WI-69S. Merge onto WI-11W/WI69S/WI-81W toward Dubuque. Take the WI-81W/WI-69S ramp toward Argyle/Freeport. Turn left
onto WI-69S/WI-81E. Follow WI-69S (crossing into IL). WI-69S turns into IL-26N. Go 15 miles.

The Farm Bureau is a large gray building with green trim. There is limited parking in front of the
building and street parking has a strictly enforced three-hour limit. The public lot is at the corner
of Spring and Walnut, just across Walnut St. from the Farm Bureau Building. Enter the building
either at the west entrance (facing Walnut) or the Spring Street entrance on the south under the
red awning. The Spring Street entrance has a handicap ramp.

of homeless pets on the Web. It provides more than 13,000 animal adoption
groups with free home pages and technical support to spotlight their adoptable
pets online as well as providing networking platforms, discounts and gifts, and
education for the groups. Visitors to the site, from the comfort of their homes,
enter search criteria to see animals available for adoption ranked by distance
from their Zip codes. The site has facilitated over 16 million adoptions since it
was created in 1996..

The mission of the PETCO Foundation is to raise the quality of life for pets and
people who love and need them. Since its inception in February of 1999, over
$75 million has been raised through a combination of fundraisers in PETCO’s
over 1000 stores and donations through the PETCO Foundation. These funds
were used to support more than 7,000 local animal welfare groups across the
U.S. The PETCO Foundation endeavors to create responsible animal guardians,
reduce the number of adoptable animals euthanized, rescue animals in crisis and
