I can’t express to you enough how ready I am to get out of this school and out of this town. I’m so sick of being surrounded by cornfields and I’m sure my fellow seniors share my thoughts. Yet, as much as I can’t wait to leave high school (just kidding.. sort of) I know I’m going to miss it when I leave. It feels like yesterday I was just starting out my freshman year. I really do mean that too. I’m almost positive I was a freshman last week. Where did all the time go? Why am I sitting here, worrying about SAT scores and college applications? It doesn’t seem real. Still, it is real, and I’m coming to terms with the fact that I’m growing up. I may not always like it, and it may not always be fun, but it’s inevitable. I’m just trying to make the most of it. This is to all those just starting high school this year: I have a word of advice. There is no time like the present to reinvent yourself. You don’t have to be the same person you were in junior high. You can change yourself to be anything you want to be. Seriously, I know this for a fact. I am not even remotely close to the person that I was in junior high. Also, grades are important. I cannot stress this enough. Start out right, and I promise you, your senior year is going to be a piece of cake. Don’t slack off your first year. That’s just plain lazy, and you’ll probably have to retake that class that you hate. Take it from me, the senior still in Algebra II. To all the seniors: We are so close it’s scary. Really, if you think about it, we’re only a few short months away from walking down that aisle and receiving that diploma, and then it’s goodbye to North Decatur. ” This, most likely, is going to be the last time most of us will see each other. Let’s make this year the best, and show this school what they’re going to be missing next year. XOXO — Kenzie Page 2 Editorial It is awkward to have to write an entire story about my opinions. I can’t believe we only have one more year after this one, Juniors. High school is half way over for us. Don’t take things too seriously. I just quit my job of four years, and it has made me realize how much I missed to be there. These may be the best years of our lives; although, I kind of think earning some $100,000 a year as a vet when I get out of college may be better. Nevertheless, our whole lives are in front of us, and there’s no acceptable reason to not smile every day. (Even Mondays.) Really, we just have one more year. In only a few months, we’ll watch the Seniors receive their diplomas, and in 2014 we’ll do the same. I can’t process that we’re this close, Juniors. Let’s make Junior year better than the last eleven, because our high school years are nearly over. Seniors: Good luck in finding colleges, in locating a roommate that’s not psychotic like that creepy movie, and in getting scholarships. You guys have always been just a car length ahead of us, and now you’re about to switch lanes. ~Josie Page 3 Columns Celebrity Avril Lavigne & Chad Kroeger By K’t Michaels This month’s cupcake is New York By Jenna Jennings cream cheese. Page 4 Columns Band Review By Kiana Sweet Maroon 5 is a pop band that started in LA. Lead vocalist and guitarist is Adam Levine. The keyboardist is Jesse Carmichael. The bass guitarist is Mickey Madden and the drummer is Ryan Dusick. They has released 4 albums since 2002. Their newest album came out just this year, titled “Overexposed.” It includes the songs “One More Night” and “Payphone.” Their first “gig”, or concert was preformed at a high school dance. They have won a total of 4 Grammy Awards and have been nominated several times. They have had many top hits and have performed thousands of concerts. CD Review By Whitney Hungate The highly anticipated album by Maroon 5 debuted on June 26, 2012. Overexposed is their fourth and most popular album yet. The album artwork is very bright and colorful with a range of modern cartoonists. It consists of two of their hit singles “Payphone”, released on April 16th and “One More Night”, released on June 9th. The album peaked at number 2 on the Billboard 100. The band’s record has a pop sound combined with pop rock, dance-pop disco, and reggae sounds that will have you tapping your toes or grabbing the nearest hair brush to sing along. The band’s official website says the CD is a “chock-full collection of undeniable, anthemic melodies.” Rolling Stone may have given the album 3.5 stars, but I would give them a solid 5. He believes, “math isn't a subject many struggle in, but it is a topic where you make many mistakes and learn from them.” Why English? In the upcoming weeks Ms. Reed’s classes will be doing acuity testing. Acuity tests are predictive test to see how they are going to do on the Istep for the 8th and 7th grades. Ms. Reed teaches 7th grade math and pre algebra plus algebra enrichment. When asked if her classes are hard she replied with,” Not if they pay attention.” Mrs. Koester teaches the college level class of pre calculus and algebra 1. She believes her classes are difficult for many students. She said, “Math takes extra time at home to complete and some students don’t want to take this extra time.” And in the upcoming future. They all have many, many equations to solve! Math teacher, Mr. Espinda, goofing around with algebra books! Page 7 Why do we need English? Does it really help us? Yes and yes. There is no way you can make it in this world without it. Without English, you wouldn’t be able to read, write, or comprehend anything. Your vocabulary would be shot and all communication skills would go out the window. In an interview with Mrs. Stotts she says,“ Every student is going to have to communicate at some point in their life, whether it be a job application, resume, or a letter to a company.” One would not be able to write any of those without the education of English. Teachers are constantly working to improve the way they teach. Currently in the English department, the teachers are working on gathering supplies for the new reading skills class taught by Mrs. Bournes. As always, North Decatur is continuously working on improving the minds of young students. Academics Art Science There is much going on in Mr. Whitaker’s art class this month. The Junior High classes are working on designing a color wheel— learning the basics. Tessellation Design is the project in the showcase this month. Spea bo A Everyone knows that charger football is a big part of the North Decatur Community. This year we are looking forward to seeing what the season will bring with a new coach and more experienced players. As much as high school students do not like to admit it, we were all in junior high at one point in our lives. Our high school football program is in existence in part of the junior high football program. The junior high practices prepare the junior high student athletes for what they might find on the high school level. R T Seventh grader, Taylor Zavala said “Practice is going good because we’re getting more in shape. Practice is also long and hard but it pays off in the game.” S In high school football this year the season is going great. The chargers are going strong with a 5-1winning record. The chargers will continue to charge on and we are sure will make it all the way on the new Ed Kaelin field. Kaelin served North Decatur from 1979 to 1994 as a custodian, while maintaining outdoor facilities and the football field. A few of the teams look a lot different than the previous years due to recent roster changes, specifically our home team, the Indianapolis Colts. R The Colts earned the first selection in the 2012 NFL Draft due to a dismal 2-14 record in 2011. On April 24th, Indianapolis used their first pick on Stanford quarterback, Andrew Luck. Many fans are having a difficult time accepting a new face as the quarterback, since most of us are used to seeing Peyton Manning, our quarterback for fourteen years. He was signed to a 4 year contract with the Denver Broncos. Other roster changes include Curtis Painter, back-up quarterback, Pierre Garcon, wide receiver, Joseph Addai, running back, Anthony Gonzalez, wide receiver, Dallas Clark, tight end, Jacob Tamme, tight end, Jeff Saturday, center, and Gary Bracket, linebacker. Those are just a few of familiar faces who are no longer a part of the Colts team. Cheerleading Breana Mcintosh The sport of cheerleading takes much commitment and time . Cheerleaders have to be very dedicated. They have to be willing to get up early in the mornings and be willing to practice the same routines several times. T S Coach Koester and the 8th grade volleyball team. Volleyball V Bump! Set! Spike! O The team is doing very well keeping busy with school work and dealing with a strong schedule. Despite the stress that comes with this sport, they are playing well. Varsity Coach Fogle said about her team, “We are a young team with little experience. We only had two returning players that played varsity last year. We are looking to be strong in sectionals and be competitive in conference play.” L Some cheerleaders, like Ashley Crain and Nichole Brown, think that getting up at 5 in the morning is the worst thing about cheerleading. Cheerleaders enjoy stunts, such as libs, full downs, and show and go extension. Most of the cheerleaders favorite jumps are the right hurkey and the toe touch. Kaitlynn Scheidler, a senior cheerleader was asked if she liked cheerleading. Her response was, “I absolutely love cheerleading. There is no other sport I’d rather participate in. I would say the time commitment, but if you are a cheerleader you better love it. So, if you love it enough, then the time commitment isn’t a big deal. I love every second of being a cheerleader for 8 years straight and have ultimately no complaints. My love for the sport is more than words can describe.” Cheerleading is considered a way of life for many of the girls, such as Kaitlynn. These girls are very strong, dedicated, and committed young women that are constantly showing their school spirit and cheering on their team, whether they are on the home field or on the field of the other team. Page 10 L E Y B A L L Band Clubs Welcome Back! By Josie Clark Choir By Darian Smothers Choir focuses on singing and learning about songs in history. People in choir sing songs from different countries and older times. It is interesting to learn about other styles and types of music. At the concerts people like to listen to the types of music that get sung. The groups are preparing for their fall concert. The seventh grade choir is singing 2 songs. They are “This old Hammer” and “Appalachian Dances”, which has 5 different songs in them. (Wayfaring Stranger, Sourwood Mountain, Cumberland Gap, Cotton-Eye Joe, and Cindy). The eighth grade is singing 3 songs. They are singing “Meserere me”, “Didn’t my Lord deliver Daniel?”, And “It don’t Mean a Thing if it ain’t got that Swing”. Concert choir is singing 3 songs. They are singing “Sing with Pleasure”, “Song of the People”, and “Sing Dem Hem”. Girls choir is singing 4 songs. They are “Lightning”, “African Lullaby”, “Goin up a Younder”, and “Illumina Ovulos Meos”. Singers are singing 5 songs. They are “Kpanlongo”, “Who Are the Brave?”, “All to Soon”’ “O Vas Omres”, and “Helleluyan.” Mr. Johnson supervises the event. Kyle Kramer and Mrs. Fry, and others play corn hole. North Decatur has four different bands right now: concert band, Jr. High band, marching band, and marcato band. High school band and Jr. High band just started when school resumed. Marching band has been going on all summer. The marching band performed in many parades and competitions, and at all the home football games. The junior high band has been working on several new songs, improving their tone quality, and learning how to site-read. Concert band has acquired three new songs to play at their upcoming concert in October. ND bands have worked hard, and will continue to do so throughout . FFA By Kiana Sweet FFA, directed by Mrs. Fry and Mr. Johnson, is a club designed for students interested in Ag. This year the FFA directors are trying a new thing. This year, any Ag. student is eligible to be in FFA and their dues are free. They hope to encourage more students to participate in the club. Fall Fun Night, according to Mrs. Fry, went very well. They had lots of high school and junior high members that attended and she said “it was lots of fun.” They had an abundance of food and many games of corn hole. Jerky sales have had a big start this year. In the first 4 days of the sale, the junior high FFA members sold all 24 cases, but don't be upset if you didn't get any jerky. Mrs. Fry says that “there are more to come.” Citrus sales for high school FFA start on October Page 11 Movie Review A Day in History The Three Stooges By Curtis Hillebrand By Mary Wagner Recently, the movie Three Stooges was released. It is a PG rated movie and lasts approximately 1 hour and 32 minutes. The movie was written and directed by Bobby Farrelly and Peter Farrelly. While trying to save their childhood orphanage, Moe, Larry, and Curly carelessly stumble into a murder plot and wind up starring in a reality TV show. It feature stars like Jane Lynch, Jennifer Hudson, Will Sasso, and Mike ‘The Situation.’ Dillon Seifert: “They’re weird, that’s it.” Hedi King: On 21st Sept. 1937 J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Hobbit," is first published which follows the quest of home-loving Bilbo Baggins. The hobbit is a fantasy novel and can be considered a children’s book although it is very popular among teens and young adults. The book was set in the time Between the Dawn of Færie and the Dominion of Men. The Hobbit follows the quest of home-loving hobbit Bilbo Baggins to win a share of the treasure guarded by the dragon, Smaug. Bilbo's journey takes him from light-hearted, rural surroundings into more sinister territory. This book is most commonly seen as the precedent of the more known books in the lord of the rings series. The Book The hobbit is now being made in to a three part trilogy just like the series The Lord of The Rings. The three part trilogy will be directed by the know director Peter Jackson. The first movie, An Unexpected Journey, will be released in theaters on December fourteenth of 2012. Toys of the movie will hit the market in October of 2012. There will be a video game before the movie releases although game companies have yet to release whether or not the game will be a tie-in with the movie. The hobbit is to be filmed in New Zealand. “They’re funny.” There’s No Fault In This Book By Kenzie Thomas Alexis Brandunburg : “Curly is bald.” Dustin Bokelman: “They always hit each other.” Jake Hartman: “Moe is the leader.” Imagine what it’s like to be 16 years old and dying. This is the life of Hazel Grace Lancaster, a fictional native of our own Indianapolis, who is dying from lung cancer. She has to be hooked up to an oxygen tank at all times beBilbo Baggins cause, in her words, “My lungs suck at being lungs.” Basically, she’s just waiting to die as she sits around her house, watches reruns of America’s Next Top Model, and attends weekly cancer support groups. However, it’s while at one of these support groups that she meets a boy who will change here life: Augustus Waters. He is an osteosarcoma survivor with a missing leg, and he is everything Hazel is looking to get out of life. He is gorgeous, smart, funny, and lives his life, despite the constant threat of his cancer returning hanging above him. He shows Hazel that her cancer is not her life. She is her own person and the cancer does not control that. Though their time together is short, it will certainly leave a mark on the reader. The Fault in Our Stars is an insightful novel about life love, loss, and what it really takes to be remembered, and I promise you, you will remember this book.
