Looking good Ray! Ray is standing next to his new RC trailer.
He has been busy building interior racks that will hold his
airplanes plus he is placing wiring for 12 and 110 volt wall
outlets. When completed, the trailer will also have a work

Long time club member (30+ years) is Larry Falsetta,
pictured here. Larry provided us with a really good Heli web
site called Runryder.com You will find a lot of interesting
information within this web site plus it has a forum
dedicated to Futaba Transmitters that Ben Minor
constantly monitors. Thanks for sending this Larry.

John, thank you for sharing your hard work.
Hello members, I received an email a few weeks ago from an RC friend, John Dickens regarding the
progress that he has had made in constructing foam wings. John emailed six pictures and some
documentation about his foam wing progress. I have added Johnʼs pictures on the following three
pages. You guys that are interested in foam planes will really appreciate what John has
accomplished. John, thanks for letting me share your article and photos as well as the camaraderie
that you have extended to us! Walt
Johnʼs email: Hello, I finally finished a foam wing and flew it for the first time. The flight was
successful and I am looking forward to collecting some test data.
I replied: John you mentioned in your email that you covered the wing with paper followed by paint.
What type of paper and paint did you use? Hello Walt, the paper is called masking paper. It is found in the paint department of home
improvement stores. The 18 inch wide roll works best. The
paper is attached with a diluted mixture of Elmer's White
School Glue. The glue is applied to both the foam and the
paper. The paper increases the stiffness of the Styrofoam
by a factor of 8. I primed the paper with a latex primer. I
had the primer tinted light blue. In the future, I will have the
primer tinted light pink to contrast with the blue foam. I
painted the wing with a glossy exterior latex paint, white on
top and yellow on the bottom.
Great job John. Did you like the way the plane handled
with the size and throws of the ailerons?
The roll rate was good, faster than a trainer, but slower
than a sport airplane. The aileron deflection was +/- ½
inch. The aileron chord is 20% of the wing chord. The total
span of both ailerons is 40% of the wing span. I finally
finished a foam wing and flew it for the first time. The flight
was successful and I am looking forward to collecting
some test data.
Lastly; Walt, while working on this foam project, I wrote a
stack of notes 2 inches thick on notebook paper. I have
consolidated these notes into a 20 page typed document.
Let me know if you know someone who is planning to
start cutting foam. See you at the airfield. John

The first two pictures are of the blue
Styrofoam wing.
14
These two pictures show the foam after it has been covered
with paper, painted, and ailerons installed.
15
These final two pictures show the wing attached to the airplane just before the maiden flight.
There is superstition in the model airplane world that if you take a picture of an airplane it will
not crash on the maiden flight. I am already making plans for different foam wings.

The attached web site gives you all the information that you need regarding these nice
RC airplane skis. The skis in the above picture are mine and they are for a 40 size
plane. I have had these for 12 years and I would buy them again in a minute.
NOTE: There is one problem though with these skis. The arrows in the picture point to
a little wire that I added to the skis in four locations. The reason for the added wire is
that I found that on occasion the factory flexible wire will hop out of its groove on
landing, and snap upward sometimes, puncturing the Monokote on the underside of
the wing. FIX: I simply drilled two tiny holes at each location where the red arrows are
pointing and I ran a wire through the holes around the factory wire adding a simple
twist to the wire. Problem fixed. Never had a problem after that. %

Un-crating and Field Assembly of the P-47
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2D3k0sJ8HM
This truly remarkable step-by-step training film shows how a ground support crew of fifty men could assemble
a P-47 fighter in a farm field using nothing more than muscle, unpowered hand tools, and pieces of the
shipping crate it came in. We're talking nothing more than hammers, wrenches and bicycle pumps. You'll get
a unique look at the inner workings of the Big Jug as it is bolted together. Then a pilot jumps in and flies it
away! A must see for P-47 fans and shade tree mechanics alike. This video is a little long at 40 minutes but
fascinating.

I think that you will agree that the expression, “he nailed his landings” comes to mind
after viewing this RC pilot below land his magnificent F-18. Very impressive flying.

Merry Christmas
and Happy
Holidays to all of you
guys and of course, a Healthy
Happy New Year to you as well!
Here is a quote that past MHRC
Newsletter Editor Al Duffy always added
to our old newsletters; “What kind of club
would Mile HI RC be if everyone in it
were just like me?”
Aren’t we fortunate that we are able to
enjoy such a “great” hobby, at a “great”
flying facility plus we get to hang out
with “great” friends.
