FOREWORD
Dear visitor,
A creative, innovative, dynamic city. That’s Genk. A city that puts all the cards on the table, but also features
hidden gems. A tourist draw with a very unique character.
Our city guides will tell you all about it. And they definitely have much to tell. They are ready to give you a warm
welcome at the different hot spots in the city.
C-mine, our pride, is the beating heart of all things creative in Genk. A landmark that attracts tourists looking for
something new. The mine shafts are no longer a symbol of the past, quite to the contrary: they point the way
to the future.
A diverse mix of cultures has resulted in a unique couleur locale. For a real culinary treat, try Vennestraat: here
you have the feeling you are in the south of Europe. Or take off your shoes and enter a huge Turkish mosque.
Hopefully you will be as convinced as we are after browsing through this brochure. If you are, feel free to build
your own trip. This brochure will help you with a wealth of inspiration.
Welcome, and start to Genk!

AND BREEDING GROUND FOR
CREATIVE TALENT
If you visit Genk, C-mine is an absolute must.

If you would like to experience Genk’s mining history in person, we recommend the C-mine expedition.
The Energy Building, the site’s beating heart in the

thanks to its mining history.

IN THE WAKE OF JEFKE TUF
WINTERSLAG COMPANY TOWN WALK
Architect Adrien Blomme, known for the Wielemans-Ceuppens Brewery (currently Wiels arts centre) in Vorst and Cinéma Métropole
in Brussels, drew the plans for the Winterslag garden city in 1912. The garden city served as the physical and social network around
the mine. Sister Marie-Josephe was part of this social fabric: she tended the sick, took care of the weak and listened to everyone’s
problems. The Solex she used to drive from patient to patient earned her the nickname ‘Jefke Tuf’. You can visit the garden city in her
wake.

CITY CENTRE
THE CHARM OF THE TOWN CENTRE COMBINED
WITH A CONTEMPORARY URBAN CHARACTER
The present-day city centre of Genk is the place where it all began.
Landscape painters came together in the original village centre and
established the School of Genk. Today you can see their work in the
Emile Van Doren Museum. As in any village centre, the posh villas
of dignitaries were located next to labourer’s cottages, village shops
and village cafés.
Genk has in the meantime evolved into a city with an industrial past
and rich industrial heritage. In the city centre of Genk you can see
how the charms of the village and the city were combined into a
place where entrepreneurship and authenticity go hand in hand.
33
EMILE VAN DOREN MUSEUM

landscape with its mysterious swamps and sandy heathland. Emile Van Doren was one of them. His villa was converted into the Emile
Van Doren Museum, where you can discover part of his oeuvre as well as that of his contemporaries in his former painting studio. The
villa also houses authentic furniture and objects from that time.

soon after. They have left behind wonderful villas, beautiful Belle Époque gems. Your visit starts in the Emile Van Doren Museum and
then takes you along various other Belle Époque villas. Like the landscape painters who retreated into nature for an entire day, you
can combine the walk with a picnic.

WATERSCHEI
AND SURROUNDINGS
ABOUT OLD AND NEW ENERGY IN
A MULTICULTURAL ENVIRONMENT
Genk used to have three collieries: Zwartberg, Winterslag and
Waterschei. The stately building of the André Dumont colliery in
Waterschei overlooks the surrounding area. This is where the
Mine Depot keeps the mining heritage alive with exceptional
stories and objects from the coal pit. The Thor Park, a technology
park focusing on energy innovation, is in full development in and
around the building.
Also situated nearby is the KRC Genk stadium, accommodating
up to 25 000 cheering football fans. And then there are the
impressive churches … In short, Waterschei is a part of Genk with
numerous different facets.

WOMEN IN THE SHADOW OF THE MINE
WATERSCHEI COMPANY TOWN WALK
The Waterschei garden cities, inspired by the popular English garden city movement, were a special residential concept. The streets
are elegantly interwoven, which had a lot of practical advantages. When the men were in the mine, the women and children kept the
district alive. They had followed their husbands from a foreign country and brought numerous household habits, recipes and souvenirs
to Genk. This resulted in a cultural melting pot, which, together with the peculiar street plan, still gives the district a certain charm.

UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH
The Ukrainian church community in Genk also seasons the city’s multicultural melting pot. The community had the former boarding
house in Waterschei converted into a church and parish centre as a commemorative monument and to honour the 1000th anniversary
of the Ukrainian catholic church. The church also has a lot in store for non-believers: a typical Byzantine dome, a beautiful wall of icons

ZWARTBERG GARDEN CITY WALK (From April 2016)
Until the early 20th century, Zwartberg only featured wild heathland, as described by Armand Preud’Homme in his song ‘In de Stille
Kempen’. Zwartberg subsequently experienced an explosive growth until the mine closed in 1966. This walk starts in the former house
of the mine manager, nowadays a charming B&B, and takes you on a tour of the relics of Zwartberg’s rapid growth. Industrial buildings have disappeared, but the districts, the school, the church and numerous other elements still bear witness to the bustle of the
past. In 2016, 50 years after the closure, stories and heritage from Zwartberg’s mining history are given additional attention.

ZWARTBERG MINE CATHEDRAL, THE CHURCH WITH 7 000 SPARKLING CRYSTALS
Henry Lacoste, one of the leading architects in the Inter-War Period, designed two mine cathedrals in Limburg. This fact alone makes
it worthwhile to visit the one in Zwartberg. However, there’s more... The mine cathedrals, impressive brick buildings, bear witness to
the golden years of the mines. The crystal stained glass windows by Val-Saint-Lambert increase the Mine Cathedral’s appeal; they are
not ‘ordinary’ stained glass windows, but massive pieces of coloured crystal, which explains why the church is also called ‘the church
with 7 000 sparkling crystals’.

a number of interesting group formulas. Like ‘Kart after work’, for instance, where you challenge your colleagues and immediately
forget any work-related stress. During the ‘100 Miles’ you don’t drive on your own but in group and on the long circuit. You compose
your own team(s), take part in the official awards ceremony and enjoy a delicious BBQ afterwards. Fun guaranteed!
