AUGUST 12-AUGUST 19 Jean and Janet Lawhead Welcome to Pentwali In the early 1970s, my grandparents retired and began searching for a new place to call home. They sailed down the coast of Lake Michigan, looking for a friendly small town with beautiful beaches and a snug harbor. They found the perfect place. Welcome to Pentwater! I remember them telling me they were moving to Pentwater. We all said, "what's a Pentwater?" We soon found out. Let's put it this way, my grandparents never lacked for company. They bought a big house for the purpose of welcoming us all and we all, 15 grandkids plus many more, came. My parents retired here, nearly 20 years later and built a house. They felt at home immediately. They had great neighbors that welcomed them. About that time I also moved to the area. My mom, Jean Lawhead, is a past president of the Garden Club of Pentwater and is now a lifetime member. Garden club members maintain the very garden under this welcome sign. Homecoming is my favorite summertime event. For years as my kids were growing up, they entered the sand castle competition, usually with their cousins, under my mom's supervision and guidance. They bickered, argued and threw sand at each other, but always laughed and had a great time. After the kids got older, we joined the family division and once won a ribbon. Mom still brags about it. What fun! Now my grandkids come to Pentwater, and we have spent countless hours at the beach, climbing Old Baldy, walking into town to shop, listening to concerts, taking sailing lessons, riding bikes, attending art fairs, going for ice cream, watching the sun set and the list goes on and on. Living the dream. All these years later I'm very glad my grandparents found this special place. It's hard to believe that you can fit so many good times and so many wonderful memories into such a small village, but you can. Enjoy. — Janet Lawhead PENTWATER THIS WEEK 1 If Pentwater Channel has finally been dredged, it's because Roseman studied the mechanism of shoaling, getting a boat, equipping it with sonar, and using software to map the channel. If someday the Montague-Hart bike trail is extended to Pentwater, it will be because of 2014 Citizen of the Year. "If I have a question, I develop a program to answer it," he shrugs, as if anybody could do the same. And so, when it came to the health and welfare of Pentwater Channel, he just went the old familiar research route. "Two or three years ago, the Army Corps of Engineers announced that they'd no longer be funding dredging for channels, especially recreational channels like ours," he recalls. While most people would have either tried to fight the decision or simply resigned themselves to it, Roseman chose to dive in—no pun intended—to the actual field of marine science. "I decided to try and understand the mechanism. I got a small boat, equipped it with sonar, got some software, developed a program, and learned how to map the channel over a period of time to study how shoaling was occurring." Mrs. R is a moniker that was given to Joyce Rottschafer by the friends of her three children. The cookbook has been on sale at the Pentwater Farmer's Market this summer and will continue to be available, after the the summer market wraps up Sept. 1, at the Rottschafer's home and possibly online. Talking with Mrs. R, who is a self-proclaimed "Chatty Cathy," can leave one on a high that rivals sinking one's teeth into her famous cinnamon rolls. "It is a conversational book. I wanted to walk the baker through the process and hopefully there are very few questions at the end," Rottschafer said about her cookbook. "Hopefully it is just like Mrs. R.'s. Take a Kid Fishing Day nets 103-plus lbs. After a week delay due to lake conditions, the 24th Annual Whitey Wegner Memorial "Take a Kid Fishing" day took place Saturday, Aug. 2. Take a Kid Fishing Day is organized each year by Ken Wegner of the Pentwater Sportsfishing Association and Becky Freeman of the Oceana County 4-H Youth Council, who together with the Pentwater Sportsfishing Association (PSA) members, arrange for commercial charter boats to volunteer their time to teach participants about Great Lake fishing and respect for the Great Lakes. The day began with boats heading out at 6 a.m. This summer's colder weather and overall Lake Michigan water temperatures foiled anglers with an overall catch of only 12 fish. The largest fish of the day brought to shore was an 18.01 pound King, caught by Silas Haberkorn on the Fish Lion. Eddie Cornell caught a 10.25 lb. Coho which is the biggest Coho caught so far this year for the PSA. Following the catch, cleaning and dividing up of the fish, participants were treated to a picnic style lunch at the Oceana Eagles where they could share the stories of their day. As winners of their categories, Haberkorn, Thomas Tanner, Cornell, Shaunna Freeman, and Colby Hagie all received an Eagle Claw rod and reel along with a Take a Kid Fishing Day results 29 Total Kids 12 Total Boats 12 Total Fish 103.51 Total Pounds 4 Total Kings 4 Total Steelhead 2 Total Lake Trout 1 Total Coho 1 Total Bass Largest King: Silas Haberkorn - 18.01 on Fish Lion Largest Steelhead: Thomas Tanner - 9.55 on Cutty Hunk Largest Coho: Eddie Cornell 10.25 on Cutty Hunk Largest Lake Trout: Shaunna Freeman - 5.05 on Just Looking Mystery Weight: Colby Hagie 8.9 King on Dean's Dream Boat with Most Pounds: Cutty Hunk with 19.83 lbs tackle box. 16 PENTWATER THIS WEEK AUGUST 12-AUGUST 19 Funding shortaa won't fizzle fireworks 231.869.4009 www.pentwaterflavors.com Find Us on Facebookl across from village green Grocery Store BY AMANDA DODGE PTVV WRITER After coming up short on funding last year for both the July 3 and the Pentwater Home- * Superior Seafood * Fresh Butcher Meats coming Celebration fireworks displays, the * Fresh Produce * Imported & Domestic Pentwater Chamber of Commerce is still in the * Specialty Market red for this year's displays. How she could have died of cancer—and lung cancer, no less—is probably the most tragic mystery of Dave Roseman's life. "She never smoked. She was a super athlete," he shakes his head."You can't explain it." They began dating in 10th grade and married while Roseman was in medical school. They lived in Chicago, raised two children, and worked side by side, Joan managing her husband's office. When they weren't "working all the time," Roseman smilingly recalls, they were Dave Roseman stands along the south side of the Pentwater Channel. Roseman was named the Pentwater Citizen of the year by the Pentwater Service Club and will be the Pentwater Homecoming Parade Grand Marshal Saturday, Aug. 16. either camping or sailing, which was how they discovered Pentwater. "We started sailing in 1973. We'd camped since 1958, but when the campground got too crowded, we took up sailing and one day we ended up in Pentwater and fell in love." The Rosemans built their house along West Ridge Road in 1989, and moved to Pentwater permanently after Dave retired. Even though PTW Photo by Andrew Skinner he expected to have many more years with his beloved life partner—whom a friend described as "the best part of him"—Roseman hasn't let grief prevent him from continuing to be active and, as always, looking forward. His newest venture has taken him into the cutting edge world of 3-D printing. This rapidly growing technology makes it possible to print in three dimensions, giving the average person the ability to create all sorts of items, without having to order them or go shopping for them. Jewelry, designer shoes, a chess set, a part for your car—these can all be printed out, in plastic or even metal. The technology is all there, and set to go. Using data from a virtual 3-D model,a nozzle heats up material like plastic, liquid or powder in a space the shape of a box, and "prints" an infinitesimally thin, flat layer on a surface. Then the nozzle goes up a tiny notch and prints another layer on top of the first layer, molding or "sintering" the material together. The process is repeated over and over, until the desired object is made. There are companies that make the most popular items, doodads and baubles, others that make parts for cars and aircraft, and others that print medical devices. According to an article in Smithsonian Magazine,"the aviation It's just another of Roseman's many gifts to industry has more than 22,000 printed parts Pentwater—a community which, he maintains, flying right now,and people are walking on 3-D printed orthopedic implants." is known for giving. Scientists are now printing muscle tissue, skin, kidneys, cartilage, bones—and body parts. Ears, fingers, toes, noses can be printed using cells taken from human tissue. "It's very exciting," Roseman enthuses. "And we're just at the beginning." He decided to introduce the students at As he looks into his own future, what does he see? "Oh, I may go back to doing some medical software," he muses."And I'm working on creating a nautilus shell necklace on the 3-D printer. There's always something to learn.
