Olympian efforts as college students win gold!!
With 460 years of history King Edward VI College in Nuneaton continues it’s record of
excellence this year with it’s best results ever!
33 subjects at AS and A level have pass rates of 100%. The pass rate for AS level is 90%,
5% above the national average and for A2 Level the pass rate is almost 99%, 3% above the
national average.
A third of students at AS level and almost half at A2 level have achieved a high grade A-B.
Overall there were 71 A* grades at Level 3.
37 students gained straight A’s across all of their A level subjects. Our congratulations go to
Joanna Quigley, Chloe Taylor, Sarah Barrington, Samantha Cooper, Paul Callender, Scott
Warin, Adrian Maye, Amy Badge, Prabin Shrestha, Michael Beavon, Chelsea Caton,
Alexander McCord, Samuel Hambridge, Hyungjin Yoon, Clare Palmer, Liam Barkes, Kathryn
Parkins, William Swift, Laila Watchorn, Neal Pointon, Bethany Waters, Steven Brotherhood,
Katie Graham, Pip Goodman, Glen Guyver-Fletcher, Matthew Purdy, Sophie Reckless,
Sabrina Kapadia, Daniel Mouncer, James Barson, Maria Panteli and John Spawton Rice.
Of particular note is Joanna Quigley who studied an amazing 7 A level subjects and got A*
and A in all 7 subjects.
Joanna says “It is thanks to my parents and also the support of the college that I have
managed to achieve this. The teaching and student support is exceptional.”
This year the college has a record 7 students who will be going on to Cambridge. Joanna
Quigley and Harry Orchard will be studying Natural Sciences; Paul Callender – Music;
Kathryn Parkins - English, Scott Warin - Law, Sarah Barrington - Engineering and Samantha
Cooper - Vet Science.
Kathryn Parkins from Hinckley says “If I hadn’t come to King Edward College I would have
never got into Cambridge. The teachers and resources here have inspired me academically
to reach for this goal.”
Some of the top performing subjects include Further Maths, Electronics, German, Film
Studies, Law, Design and Technology, History, Media Studies, Philosophy, Drama and
English Literature.
Sabrina Kapadia achieved straight A’s in her subjects and has a place at Liverpool
University where she will study medicine. Sabrina says “The staff at college have been
outstanding! Every teacher I had pushed me to the best of my ability. I couldn’t have done it
without them.”
Jack West from Nuneaton studied Drama, Performing Arts and Film at A Level and has now
been offered a place at Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts which is one of the top drama
schools in the country.
Simon Winterman, Director of Arts says “We are delighted with the results this year and the
students achievements. This reflects the enthusiasm, passion and specialism of all our
staff.”
With a strong tradition for GCSE and A level examination success the college now offers a
wide range of BTEC courses and all BTEC courses achieved 100% pass rate. In some
BTEC subjects over 50% of students achieved a Distinction*
Adrian Peberdy Curriculum Area Manager for Business and IT says “We are developing our
BTEC offering and now have a wide range of subjects available. We are really pleased with
the 100% pass rate but also the high percentage of Distinctions and Distinction* represents
the dedication of staff and students”
King Edward VI College is delighted that, with these results, the vast majority of students will
be in a position to progress to the University or employment of their choice with strong
career prospects.
The Principal, Dr Esther Maughan says “Nuneaton’s King Edward VI College is one of 93
sixth form colleges in the country. As University places become more competitive, sixth form
college students have a distinct advantage over others as not only are sixth form colleges
recognised as the highest performing institutions nationally but also sixth form colleges
prepare students well for University acting as a half way house between school and
University.”
Dr Maughan continues “Even by Sixth Form Colleges standards King Edwards students
have performed extremely well this year. These results are a testament to the expertise,
skills and sheer hard work of both our students and our staff.”
The college is still considering applications and enrolment starts on Tuesday 28th August.
