scholarship applications are
now available online. This
is the 13th year we are
giving away scholarships to
OSGL student members
pursuing a higher education.
To qualify for our scholarships, you must
be an OSGL member for at least six months
and will be attending a two-year or four-year
accredited college, trade school, or technical
school on a full-time basis. Graduate, postgraduate school, and internships are
excluded.
Scholarship awards are judged by an
outside panel (non-affiliated with OSGL)
based on criteria in the areas of scholastic
achievement, extra-curricular activities,
leadership, and community involvement, as
well as communication, writing skills,
presentation, and creativity.

Hawaii Chinese Qing Ming Celebration
Each year in April we celebrate Qing Ming. It is an
ancient practice where we honor our ancestors at their
gravesite. Qing Ming is also known as Tomb Sweeping
Day, and is celebrated by Chinese all over the world.
In Honolulu, the Hawaii Chinese Qing Ming
Celebration Committee, the City and County of
Honolulu, and the United Chinese Society of Hawaii is
sponsoring Qing Ming at the Manoa Chinese Cemetery
beginning at 9:30am on Wednesday, April 6, 2011.
The main ceremony will take place at the Grand
Ancestors Tomb at the top of the hill. There will be
street parking. Shuttles to the cemetery are available
beginning at 8:30am. Light refreshments will follow the
ceremony.
Seating is limited, and is first-come, first-serve. It is
advisable to bring a light jacket and umbrella, as it
frequently rains in Manoa.
OSGL makes an annual donation to support this
age-long tradition in Hawaii. Please attend, show your
support, and learn about this cultural tradition.

An Honorary Director is a member who has been

2011 President’
President’s Message
I
would like to thank the membership for electing me for this oneyear term. I am filling in for 2011 until the next president becomes
more comfortable to move up the ladder. It is my belief, and I believe
Oo Syak Gee Lu’s that we move our officers and directors upwards. As
they gain experience and build confidence, they move from director to
Chinese Secretary, vice-presidents, and up to President. Of course there
are some who would rather stay in one position, such as a director,
English Secretary, and Treasurer, and since they are doing a great job,
we would not consider changing this. Following this practice very
capable presidents should continuously lead us.
For 2011, it will be “business as usual,” except that I plan to help the up and coming officers become
better familiar with and more comfortable with Robert’s Rules of Order. However, since we are a “familyorientated” Chinese society, we will continue to have as much informal meetings whenever the situation
warrants it. Currently our bylaws call for an Executive Committee as one of the standing committees.
Traditionally an Executive Committee is composed of the officers including the Immediate Past-President.
This committee is traditionally charged with acting on behalf of the Board of Directors during the interim
times between board meetings, which means the committee makes decisions without board approval.
However, with the Internet and cell phones, I believe we can inform the whole board and have board
decisions without having to call special meetings. We should therefore, redefine the role of the Executive
Committee or remove it from the bylaws.
My mission continues to be establishing Oo Syak Gee Lu Society as a very good Chinese community
citizen known by all of the other societies and Chinese community for participating in events and causes
benefiting and promoting our Chinese heritage. This may mean a little more expenditures while staying
within a budget.
We continue to think of ways to increase member interest in Oo Syak. We invite all members to attend
our annual banquet in August at half price. Our Christmas party in December is free to all members. All
of our quarterly Board of Directors meetings are open to the membership, and lunch after the meeting is
free. We continue to award four $1,000 scholarship to members attending 2-year and 4-year colleges.
There are several other Chinese community events where we pay for our members attending.
Finally, congratulations to Wah Jip Chang who was recently honored as our Honorary Director for
2011. This is truly a very deserving award to an outstanding Oo Syak member who help turn the society
around and help put it in its current good condition.

Installation Meeting – Hee Hing Restaurant
The new Board of Directors and Officers were installed in January at Hee Hing Restaurant by the
Honorable Herbert Shimabukuro.
We have a new President, Edmund Chang; 2nd Vice President, Ethel Chang Chow; Chinese
Secretary, Jocelyn Chang Chuck; and Director, Gwendolyn Chang Fu. All other Officers and Directors
remained the same.
After swearing in the officers and directors, incoming President Edmund Chang presented outgoing
President Alvin Chang with a certificate of appreciation for his two years of dedicated service.

Honorary Director – Wah Jip Chang
Wah Jip Chang served as President 1996-1997
and a Director thereafter. His father is one of the
original founding members of OSGL in 1897. He is
recognized as an Honorary Director for rejuvenating
Oo Syak Gee Lu.
Wah Jip is responsible for directing the assembly
of a formal membership list, and upgrading the
rental property and its insurance coverage. Under
his leadership, member interest in Oo Syak grew.
At 92 years young, Wah Jip enjoys his retirement
life. He keeps too busy during the day that he can’t
name all the activities he does. You may find him at
Kahala Mall talking about stocks with a cup of
Starbucks with his buddy.
Wah Jip’s brother Wah Chock Chang, who
resides in Palolo Chinese Home, holds the first
Honorary Director title in 2007.

Chinese New Year Parade
On January 29th, the City of Honolulu
celebrated Chinese New Year on the
streets of Chinatown. More than 80 local
groups and organizations, and mainland
and international troupes participated in
the parade along Hotel Street.
This annual event is sponsored by the Chinatown
Merchants Association, Chinese Chamber of Commerce,
and the City and County of Honolulu, amongst others. Each
year, the parade seems to grow larger and larger, with more
spectators enjoying the festivities. Thousands of people
lined up along Hotel Street to catch a glimpse of the Chinese
dragon, lions, and the 2011 Narcissus and Chinatown
Queens and their courts.
OSGL members proudly marched along with high spirits
and energy as we toyed spectators with our Chinese lion
puppets and instruments. We also passed out OSGL
pencils, so members of the community will begin to
recognize us.
After the parade, OSGL member participants had a fullcourse meal at Won Kee Restaurant. Maunakea Street and
other side streets were closed to traffic. The Chinese
Cultural Plaza and Maunakea Street were lined with food
booths and vendors who sold Chinese trinkets and Year of
the rabbit memorabilia. Kung fu, martial arts, and lion dance
performances were held at the Moongate Plaza, Maunakea
Street, King Street, and Smith Street stages lasted
throughout the late night.

CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF DR. SUN YAT-SEN:

One hundred years ago, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen founded the Republic of China. History
tells us that the time he spent in America, and more importantly in Hawaii, helped to
shape his ideals and belief that led to the founding of the Republic of China.
He attended Iolani School and Oahu College (formerly Punahou School) before
returning to China. He traveled back to Hawaii, and is known as the is the Founding
Father of the Republic of China, and the “Father of Chinese Revolution”.
Throughout this year, there will be events celebrating the honor of Dr. Sun’s
achievements. OSGL is a sponsor of the Centennial Celebration and various events
throughout the year. We have several people involved with planning these events
for the community. Three events are listed here. We hope that you will show your
support in attending these cultural and educating events.

Cultural Performance at Hawaii Theatre
On Saturday, March 12, 2010 at 10:00am, a
memorial ceremony will be held in honor of Dr. Sun
Yet Sen. The ceremony will be at the Dr. Sun YatSen statue located on the Chinese Cultural Plaza
Mall on River street,.
OSGL will be attending and presenting a lei at
this event. If you are interested in attending, please

Scholastic Symposium
A scholastic symposium highlighting the
understanding of Dr. Sun Yat-Sen’s ideals, principles,
thoughts and achievements will be held on Saturday,
March 26th at the East West Center.
There will be essay readings (in English), a review
of the Republic of China’s achievements and
prospects, panel discussions and a free light lunch to
all those who attend.

Flag Raising Ceremony – January 1, 2011
To start off the new year, OSGL officers participated in a Flag
Raising Ceremony for the Centennial Celebrations of Dr. Sun Yat
Sen and the Republic of China. President Edmund Chang, 1st Vice
President Jamie Chang, and 2nd Vice President Ethel Chow arrived
early morning to raise the American flag at the Chinese Cultural
Plaza. Board of Director Donna Chang was also present, as she is
on the planning committee for the Centennial Celebration events with
English Secretary Connie Mark,.
After the flag was raised, we had a Chinese breakfast at Empress
Chinese Restaurant, treated by the Kung Sheong Doo Society.
