A FAITH-BASED MINISTRY
Independent Living Assisted Living Skilled Nursing Intergenerational Center (Adult Day/Child Learning)
“If you don’t use it, you lose it!” That’s our
motto at Presence Heritage Lodge Assisted Living.
And it does not only apply to your body, but
to your mind and spirit as well. We believe our residents are so happy because all their needs are being
met; physically, emotionally, and spiritually. This is
what is referred to as a holistic approach to wellness.
I was so pleased to learn that even our new Presence
Health mission statement refers to holistic care. As
part of our holistic Wellness Program at the “Lodge”
we offer:

What is Holistic Care?
Holistic care is about caring for the whole person, not just treating a physical illness or separating a person into parts. It means we recognize that family, relationships, emotions, spirituality and beliefs, environment, social and work
structures are just as important as medicine,
food, and physical therapy, to healing. All of
those elements make up who we are as a person.
At Presence Health, we provide compassionate,
holistic care. We treat the entire person: body,
mind and spirit. Attention to a person’s spiritual
health or mental health is equally important as
the diagnosis and treatment of physical ailments.
We do not separate a person into diagnosis and
treatment plans, but recognize the impact on
the person’s whole being.
Because we are a Catholic health care system,
we recognize the sacred dignity of each individual. We don’t impose our beliefs or assumptions; we listen to what our residents tell us and
provide person-centered care that addresses
their particular needs. We provide ―care‖, which
is far more than just ―health care‖!

The Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery receives IAC Grant!
The Gretchen Charlton Art Gallery is proud to announce that they are
once again the recipients of an operating grant from the Illinois Arts
Council (IAC), which will help support all gallery programs in the 2013
calendar year.
This year, the IAC grant will help the gallery reach its goal of developing
programming that reaches teenagers in Kankakee County. ―It is unfortunate that we are living in a time when arts budgets are continuing to
dwindle, because the arts are such a positive outlet for adolescents,
said Jan Glazar, gallery director. ―Here at the gallery, we wish to be
able to offer a positive outlet for our area teens.‖
The Gretchen Charl-
ton Art Gallery provides members of the greater Kankakee community –
from children to older adults – with an opportunity to experience the arts
with monthly classes and events as well as high-quality exhibits.
Our 14th Annual PHV Craft show was a huge success. Thank you to everyone who supported the
show via monetary donations, baking or shopping.
The activity department raised $ 1383.75 at the
event. The funds raised are used to purchase recreation equipment, aquarium expenses, new fish
and special events/parties and bands for our residents enjoyment.

What is a “Family Support Group?”
Every 3rd Wednesday, of the month, at 3:30 P.M. there is a “Family Support Group” that meets for an
hour at Presence Heritage Village in Kankakee. This time, together, is facilitated by Chaplain
Carole R. DiZeo. The setting is a place where you can freely and willingly let your emotions speak for
themselves. When family members have to make difficult, discerning decisions about placing their
loved ones in a nursing home and/or assisted living facility there are all kinds of feelings that come to
the surface. Some of those feelings are guilt, anger, uncertainty, fear, sadness, etc. In Doug Manning’s
book, “When Love Gets Tough” he states: “Love is doing what people need---not just what they want.
Love is doing what people need---not what we want.” That is not always an easy philosophy to follow. It might help in getting things started for your loved ones. A “Family Support Group” lets people
speak on just what they are feeling and how they are coping with their decisions and emotions. Sometimes when family members have their father in a nursing home and/or assisted living center they feel
as if they aren’t spending enough time with their mother who lives at home. When holidays roll
around family members struggle with questions like: “What do we do for the holidays, because dad
wants to come home and be with his family?” Or “Are we spending too much time with dad being in
the nursing home and/or assisted living center and not enough time with mom?” And the questions go
on and on and on. A “Family Support Group” is where you can say whatever you are feeling without
being judged or without feeling guilty for normal everyday feelings. If you are shy, about expressing
yourself, just listening, intently, will help you feel supportive and affirmed with your emotions and/or
your struggles. Hearing other people express themselves can help you feel as if you are not the only
one feeling what you are feeling. As you continue to come to the “Family Support Group” you may
find that you are ready to express your emotions. This time together is provided so that the family
members have an outlet to express themselves in a safe, secure confidential atmosphere. The “Family
Support Group” will also have you feeling that you can enjoy your leisure time without feeling guilty
or as if you have to visit your loved one everyday. In Doug Manning’s book there is also another
quote I would like to share: “Using a nursing facility allows us the freedom to spend more quality time
with our loved ones. While the nursing home staff takes care of their physical needs, we can concentrate our efforts in other areas. This leaves us free to do enjoyable things we might not have the time
or energy to do if we provided the physical care. This gives us a chance to be a welcome visitor and
creator of good times.”

This quarter, the featured resident’s recipe is one of our Memory
Enhancement groups favorites. We hope you try it!
Puffy Popcorn Caramel Snacks
1 cup butter
1 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup light corn syrup
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 (8oz) pkg puffy popcorn snacks
Boil the butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup for five minutes, stirring constantly. Remove from
stove and add vanilla and baking soda, stir well. Pour over popcorn snacks, coating evenly. Bake in
a 250 degree oven for 30 minutes stirring occasionally. Remove from oven and keep stirring until cool, so as
not to stick together.
We have many holiday celebrations scheduled in December. Please remember to check the weekly activity calendar for the full
list of events. Copies of the calendar are also available on the main lobby piano or in the front office.
Fall at the Village is always a busy and exciting time. We enjoyed over 75 trick or treaters, a
Halloween costume contest for staff, the 14th annual craft show where we “shopped til we
dropped”, a Veteran’s Day Service honoring our resident Veterans, and the Resident and Family
Thanksgiving dessert social. Below are some pictures highlighting the events.
