Month….. ….. Introducing Jack!!! Jack!!! Sensitive, Handsome Boy!!! Jack is a four to five year old handsome husky who apparently lost his way when frightened by the noise and the fireworks on Fourth of July. We cannot imagine losing such a wonderful boy but no one has come forward to claim him and he is ready to find a forever home and start his second leash on life. Jack has settled in at his foster home and is a friendly boy who likes affection. He gets along quite well with the other dog in the home and would do well in a home with another large dog (no cats please). He is not food or toy aggressive and lets his foster mom brush him quite easily (always a good quality in a Siberian!). Jack is absolutely terrified of thunderstorms and loud noises (emergency vehicles, etc.), which is why he found his way to rescue. This boy needs a family that will care for him, protect him and keep him safe and sound. If you are interested in adopting Jack, please contact us. We are getting to know this fantastic guy and learning more about him each day. Visit http://sibes.com/jack.html for further information -3- Volunteer Of The Month….. Introducing Ashley!!! Ashley!!! Ashley with Jade Ashley has grown up with MaPaw and the years have flown by. Even when she was in the Fifth Grade and "just a pup", it was obvious there was a very special bond between her and the dogs. Ashley's talent and love for the dogs has been an incredible help over the years as well as a joy to have around. We look forward to her being an important part of our MaPaw Family for years to come. Thank you Ashley ~ for everything you do! I live in Pennsylvania with my mother, Susan. My pack members include Jade who is around 13 years old, Dina-Rose who is 3, and my first Mapaw dog Luke who is about 9 years old. I currently attend North Penn High School. I first got involved with Mapaw when I was in 5th grade when we adopted Luke. My story is probably a little different than many because it started with a school assignment. I was only 10 years old when I wrote about how much adopting Luke meant to me after I had lost my previous husky and the letter was sent in to Kathy R without my knowing, by my grandmother. It seemed like an overnight experience and before I knew it I was a Junior Volunteer. Now that I am in High School I have graduated from the junior status and am now a volunteer. In the rescue I attend meet and greets, -4- update pet adoption web-pages, and many other behind the scenes jobs with Kathy as I am doing a mentor ship with her and the rescue through a Gifted Mentor Program in my high school. I look forward to helping with all I can this year. Ashley Ashley at the 2009 Hike N Howl Ashley with Casino Ashley at the Irish Festival Ashley greeting a newbie -5- Incoming and Outgoing….. January 2010 Incoming Ranger Ranger is approximately two years old and is a friendly, happy boy. Somehow he lost his family and wound up on the streets and found his way to a shelter and then into rescue. Everyone is Ranger's instant best friend ~ when we first met him we were immediately greeted with tail wags and very nice kisses. In addition to being man's best friend, Ranger gets along very nicely with other dogs. He is curious, but not destructive as long as supervised properly. Ranger is at a wonderful age – young with plenty of puppy in him and after exercise and a good play session, he is very happy to hang out with you near the sofa for quality time and maybe a good movie or book. Ranger is housebroken and crate trained. Like most Siberians he can be an escape artist. He quickly learned to open the screen door and operate the door handle at his foster home. Ranger is a very smart boy. We are getting to know Ranger and he is delighting us every day. He will be best in a dog savvy home that can enjoy him and appreciate his Siberian traits. Visit http://sibes.com/ranger.html for further information Skamp -6- Skamp is a 1 year old Husky mix that is making friends everywhere he goes! When you meet him, he'll certainly win you over with his husky smile and great personality! Skamp is quickly settling into his foster home and is so happy to be part of a pack. He's full of energy and is always ready for a game or two... His foster home is working on crate training ~ he's not a huge fan, but he's trying really hard. Skamp enjoys cuddling on the sofa and loves to share husky kisses. Since Skamp has just joined MaPaw, we are still getting to know him. Be sure to check back soon for updates as we get to know him. In the past few months, we have had the pleasure of helping out some really great dogs. Unfortunately, that means we have some pretty extensive medical bills..... The first items have been posted ~ you can check them out here: http://shop.ebay.com/mapaw_huskies/m.html If you'd like to help out and have some things to donate for the auction, please contact us. Happy shopping!!! -9- Happy Tails….. Stryder!!! Stryder and his Christmas Tree Stryder, adopted by the very happy Barb and Dale in April 2008, has moved to South Lake Tahoe, California! Here is our “tail” ~ We had always planned to move out to the mountain west, and bought a house in November of 2007 in South Lake Tahoe, California. It is a great place to ski, hike, boat, and have fun. After we lost our beloved dog in February of 2008, we wanted to adopt a dog that needed a home. Since we planned our move out west, we knew we wanted a husky, because they love the snow. We teased that we were "going where the weather suits our dog". When Stryder came into our lives, we did not have a fenced yard, so we made sure to walk him (run him most of the time) at least four miles every day to make sure he received all the exercise a healthy young pup would need. But we promised him a fenced in yard with lots of room to run as soon as we could move. That time came in April of 2009. We put our house on the market, and it sold in October of 2009! So we packed up a van, and Dale, Stryder and I began the journey to California. Stryder loved the ride and everywhere he went, someone gave him a compliment on his looks, demeanor, and general sweetness. We stopped in Michigan, where he visited his grandparents. Then on to Omaha, where we stayed in a dog friendly Ramada Inn. We - 10 - stopped every two hours to change drivers, walk our best boy, and stretch all our legs. Our next stop was Colorado, where we had a picnic in a beautiful park. After that, we were onto Utah, where we stayed with friends with a fenced in yard! That was definitely Stryder's favorite stop! Our last stop before our new home was Reno Nevada, where Stryder's other grandmother and his favorite Aunt Nancy live with their dog, Noel. Noel is a weiner dog, so she is a little hesitant about playing with Stryder but they are learning to love each other, and as long as Noel does not try to eat Stryder's food, everything is all right! Stryder is so happy in South Lake Tahoe. He loves the snow, taking long hikes in the meadow, and going to the local "bark park". There are so many huskies here, he has finally found his "people". That is our story, and we are signing off from South Lake Tahoe! Take care, and happy New Year to all. Thank you for the update Barb! And thank you so much for giving Stryder the love and life he deserves, he looks fantastic! We love getting Happy Tails stories and pictures from our adopters and friends! - 11 - Rescuers Need Rescue, Too By Chandra Moira Beal Animal rescue is deeply rewarding yet extremely difficult work. To survive in this realm, one must find healthy ways to cope with the emotional challenges. Here are 10 points to ponder. You can't save them all. Even if you spent every hour of every day working to save animals, you still wouldn't be able to save them all. Take comfort in knowing that you are not alone in your efforts. Work smarter, not harder. Manage your rescue efforts like a business. Organize tasks to make the best use of time. For example, time spent recruiting more volunteers may make more sense in the long run than trying to do more yourself. If you find yourself pulled in many directions, you might be more effective if you focus on one rescue facility, one geographic locale, or one species or breed. Just say no. Many people feel guilty when they can't take care of everything that comes up. Be realistic about how much you can handle! If you're feeling overwhelmed, it's okay to say, "I can't right now." Delegate to others when possible, and ask for help when you need it. You are making a difference. Whenever you question whether you're helping very much, remember the old parable about the man walking on the beach, picking up starfish who have washed ashore and tossing them gently, one by one, back into the ocean. Another man approaches, notices that there are starfish on the beach for as far as the eye can see, and asks, "What difference can you possibly make when there are so many?" Looking at the creature in his hand, the first man replies, "I can make all the difference in the world to THIS starfish." Celebrate victories. There are happy endings to many rescue stories. Rejoice in what is working. Of course, seeing an animal go home with a loving family is the greatest reward of all. Small kindnesses do count. It's common to think that small efforts don't mean as much as large victories, but stopping to pet an animal, even for just one minute is worth doing. Your touch may be the only friendly attention he or she receives that day. Grooming, holding and comforting, or intoning softly that you care, are activities that many shelters don't have time for. Find outlets for emotional release. Rescue work can be physically exhausting, emotionally draining and spiritually challenging. Don't dismiss your feelings or think you're a wimp for being affected by it all. Talk to someone you trust about what you're experiencing. Cry when you need to. Write your feelings in a journal. Channel your emotions into action by writing to the editor of your newspaper or your local representatives about the need for animal protection legislation. Take care of yourself. Make time to do whatever makes you feel good. Take a relaxing bath, or go out to dinner and let someone else do the cooking. You need to recharge your batteries in order to maintain mental and physical health. - 12 - Don't downplay your compassion. When people ask me why I rescue animals, often I'm tempted to say, "Oh, it's not big deal" or "Somebody's got to do it," when in reality I rescue animals because I care so deeply about them. Compassion is healthy, normal and necessary for this work. Let people know how important this cause is to you. You just might inspire others to become involved. Never give up. When you get discouraged, it is tempting to throw in the towel. Take a break, and come back fighting. And remember the man and the starfish. If you would like to join us in helping the huskies, please contact us. Every effort, no matter how small, makes a huge difference to our fur-friends. Recipe Of The Mont Month….. Uh, I hope you don't mind, but I thought Mapaw would like to know how I'm doing here. You guys rescued me from starvation, and Bernie and Aaron nursed me back to health. I was worried that I did something wrong, because she abandoned me somewhere in a place called New Jersey. I guess she didn't really abandon me, because this place is pretty nice. There's another husky here, Loki, to play with ~ he gets a bit jealous at times, and a cat, I think his name is either PITA or Jasper, who is fun to play with. - 14 - The people here treat me really well, I sleep in their bed with them and Loki, and sometimes PITA, on really cold nights. The old guy calls them two dog/one cat nights, and makes comments about not wanting to go through a three dog night. I've gotten to like the old guy, he takes me and Loki for walks and rides in his truck. Loki gets jealous, but the old guy reassures him that he likes us both, so it's OK, I think. The pretty lady here is real nice too, she got a fence put in the back yard for me and Loki to run in. She makes sure the old guy treats us nice. Loki and I wrestle and run and fight about who is dominant, and the old guy tries to convince us that he's pack leader. (Giggle), and the yard is now in a state of total destruction, the old guy said that, I don't know what he means, but it's a great place since Loki and I "fixed" it. It now has neat holes, big areas of dusty dirt, mud, and other nice features. It also used to have sticks coming up from different places, roses, I think they're called. Loki and I have corrected that problem for the most part. We've left a couple of small ones, the old guy seems to like them for some reason. So, anyways, I'm pretty happy here, and the people seem to be glad I'm here too. They have some little people who come to visit, called grandkids, they're fun too ~ especially the one they call Ryan. He went with us to something called 'Hike 'N Howl, where I met with Halo, my rescue buddy. Well, I have to go now, the old guy is chasing me away, and I think Loki wants to give a pupdate too..... Till later, Timber ☺ Hmmmph, Loki here, I see the upstart pup sent a pupdate…..hmmmph!!! - 15 - Things were just fine here without him, and I make sure he knows that!!!! Hmmmph!!!! He's sooooo cute…..pooh!!!! I'm the handsome one, and he'd better not forget it.....I'm the one that makes my master take us for walks and rides in the truck…..I make sure to remind the master every morning to take us for the walk, let us into the yard, take us for a ride, and all the other things necessary for our well-being and happiness. Oh, I also got mom to have a fence put up…..it gives me a chance to show everyone my speed and agility as I train Timber to be a real husky, like me!!! I'm the one that taught Timber how to improve the yard with holes and to remove the green stuff, and that the sticks growing there should be removed... ..he didn't know any of that stuff before I taught him..... OK, maybe I'm being a bit cynical, he is fun to wrestle with, except when he knocks me on my a$$. Oh, he runs pretty fast too, so chasing each other in the yard is lots of fun.....my master can't run like that..... Oh, yeah…..'nother thing, I have to teach him to play with things, I gave up on trying to teach him how to destroy toys. I finally just got him to play with a ball, silly pup never knew how before.....still tryin' to get him to play tug o war with me.....he just can't seem to get the idea.....????? So anyways, in spite of the new guy, I'm doin' good and maintainin' control here, even got Timber keepin' Jasper in line for me.....Hmmm, that's a relief for me.... I can sleep more☺ Yeah, and plot......gotta keep everyone on their toes here.....oh, the grandkids, yeah, I'm still their favorite, too!!! I let them pay some attention to Timber. I don't want to seem selfish..... Yeah, life is good!!!! Thanks, everyone at Mapaw, Loki Deb’s Play Date Collage - 16 - MaPaw Gallery….. Sibe Shots!!!
