How wonderful to sit at Jesus’ feet. Sharing work (‘pitching in’) is good too. Mention this story to a friend or family member and see where the conversation leads. As for the first reading, Abraham, saw three men nearby, “… he ran … to greet them.” Not only did he greet them warmly, but also he provided water to bathe their feet; Sarah prepared a meal; and he “waited on them.” We call this Radical Hospitality, an attitude that many parishes are intentionally adopting. Every person in a pew should be a greeter; yes, even YOU. We are all called to welcome the stranger in our pews and reach out to assist the newcomer. from the Saint Rocco Society of Potenza, 2016, New York, NY http://www.stroccosociety.com Saint Rocco was born of noble parentage about 1340 AD Montpellier, France. At birth it was noted that he had a red cross-shaped birthmark on the left side of his chest. As a young child, Saint Rocco showed great devotion to God and the Blessed mother. At an early age, his parents died leaving him an orphan under the care of his uncle, the Duke of Montpellier. Soon after, Saint Rocco distributed his wealth among the poor and took a vow of poverty. Saint Rocco dressed in the clothes of a pilgrim and departed for Rome. Along the way, he stopped at Aquapendente, which was stricken by the plague, and devoted himself to the plague victims, curing them with prayer and the sign of the cross. He next visited Cesena and other neighboring cities, and then finally Rome. Legend has it that everywhere he visited, the terrible scourge disappeared before his miraculous power. He visited Mantua, Modena, Parma, and other cities, all with the same results. During his travels, he too contracted the plague which was evident by an open sore on his leg. Rocco was banished from the city and took refuge in a cave. There he slept on leaves and drank water from a small stream. Miraculously a dog that refused to eat faithfully brought him bread as a means of sustenance. The dog used to live in a nearby castle and the lord of this castle having a curious nature followed this dog into the woods and discovered Rocco. The nobleman had pity on Rocco and brought him to his castle where Rocco was cured. Saint Rocco is greatly venerated in Southern Italy and Sicily. In fact, no other country in the world honors Saint Rocco as extensively as Italy, most particularly in the South. Numerous cholera epidemics ravaged Southern Italy from shortly after Saint Rocco’s death and the Southern Italian people turned to Saint Rocco for his protection against this plague, other sickness and for his help in all circumstances of life. Recalling his own childhood in Argentina, when people prayed that dictators would go to hell, the pope recalled how Jesus himself tells us to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us. Reflecting on the Gospel reading from St. Matthew where Jesus tells his disciples to love their enemies, Pope Francis noted that this instruction was in contrast to what the doctors of the law taught in those days: “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” The Jewish law, he said, was being taught in a way that was too theoretical, based only on the letter of the law and not on the love of God at the heart of that law. For this reason, the pope said, Jesus repeats the most important commandment of the Old Testament: Love your God with all your heart, and with all your strength, and with all your soul, and your neighbor as yourself. This was not at the heart of what the doctors of the law were teaching, he said. They were only worried about details and individual cases, but Jesus shows the true sense of the law which he came to fulfill. The pope noted how Jesus offers many examples to show the commandments in a new light and to prove that love is more generous than the letter of the law. From ‘Do not kill’ meaning don’t insult or be angry with your brother, to the instructions to give your coat to the person who demands your shirt, or go the extra mile with the person who wants to be accompanied for one mile. This is not just for the fulfillment of the law, the pope said, but it also helps to heal our hearts. In Jesus’ explanations of the commandments, especially in St. Matthew’s Gospel, he said, there is a journey of healing. Every heart wounded by sin — as each one of us has — must undertake this journey of healing in order to be more like our “heavenly Father (who) is perfect.” The last and most difficult step on this journey towards perfection, Pope Francis said, is contained in Jesus’ words from [today’s] reading: “You have heard that it was said, you shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” The pope recalled that as a child, people used to pray for God to send the dictators of that period to hell, but instead, he said, God calls us to examine our consciences and to pray for our enemies. May the Lord give us grace, he concluded, to pray for those individuals who hurt and persecute us. The power of prayer, the pope said, will do two things: it will change that person for the better, and it will make us become more like children of our heavenly Father.
