December 6 – Second Sunday in Advent Quoting the prophet Isaiah, Luke instructs us: “Prepare ye the way of the Lord.” This is what Advent is about, but it is sometimes hard to keep this focus, when there are such great sales and free shipping and promises of the lowest prices of the season. But, as always, we are not left on our own. Paul’s letter to the Philippians reminds us that God, “who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.” We can do it. We can prepare our hearts and minds to receive Him – our greatest Gift. The Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception Few doctrines of the Catholic Church are as misunderstood as the dogma of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. Many people, including many Catholics, think that it refers to the conception of Christ through the action of the Holy Spirit in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. That event, though, is celebrated at the feast of the Annunciation of the Lord (March 25, nine months before Christmas). The Immaculate Conception refers to the condition that the Blessed Virgin Mary was free from Original Sin from the very moment of her conception in the womb of her mother, Saint Anne. We celebrate the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on September 8; nine months before is December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
