Tourism Tidbits
By: Debi Boughton
Tourism Director
Cornerstone Wealth Management
The tourism staff is very busy this month hosting a
group of travel planners, hosting a hotel employee
orientation, hosting the Bike Across Missouri and the Air
Race Classic and greeting Truman students at Freshman
Orientations. We are also excited about this year’s Red,
White and Blue Festival.
This year’s 3 day festival begins with Cemetery
Theater. In honor of the Kirksville Chamber’s Centennial
Celebration several of the historic characters portrayed
will be men who served on the very first Kirksville Chamber
Board. These civic minded people formed our Chamber of
Commerce in 1915 to promote the civic, industrial, and
commercial interests of the city and community. You will
have to actually attend Cemetery Theater to learn which
board member traveled to Montana on a wagon train,
which board member served as the local Methodist
minister, and which one has a building named after him on
the campus of Truman State University. Learn which
original board member was a dentist and which one served
as President of the Missouri Retail Grocer’s Association.
This year’s Cemetery Theater performance will be at
Forest Llewellyn Cemetery from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. on
Thursday, July 2nd.
The Red White and Blue Festival will be held from
July 2-July 4th. Again this year the festival includes a
community band performance and veterans honor service;
the apple pie contest and auction; the Summer on the
Square concert, the Red, White and Blue Bike Ride; the
pancake breakfast and Farmer’s Market, the parade, firecracker 5K, the Splash Bash, and of course fireworks! Be
sure to stay in Kirksville for the celebration and invite your
friends and family to visit Kirksville for a great, all American
Festival. For the whole schedule, go to
visitkirksville.com/redwhiteandblue/.
The Chamber is planning to celebrate its
centennial with a special 100th birthday party and an old
fashioned picnic on August 20th. Be sure you put the date
on your calendar now. The picnic will be at Rotary Park
and will include an old fashioned fried chicken dinner, a
cake walk, croquet, horse shoes, children’s games from
the early 1900s, and of course cake and ice cream.
The Chamber wishes to thank the following
businesses for reaffirming their belief in the
Chamber of Commerce.
