seeking re-election) at an interactive forum (at
approximately 8pm), co-sponsored by the
Foxhall and Palisades Citizens Associations.
On November 4, Ward 3 residents will elect a
new representative to the State Board of
Education, which sets education policy for the
city’s schools.

Used Book Sale October 10-12
Time to hit the books again at the Friends of Palisades Library
Fall Used Book Sale. Mark your calendar for Friday and
Saturday, October 10 and 11, 10 am – 4 pm both days, and
Sunday, October 12, 1 - 4 pm to browse the huge selection of
books donated to Palisades Library, 4901 V St. NW (corner of
MacArthur Blvd. & V St.).
Shop in five areas: Upstairs in the Friends’ stacks you’ll find
overflowing shelves of fiction, mysteries, classics, and nonfiction, including history, biographies, travel, science,
philosophy, and many other categories. In the large main room
you can find children’s books, old and interesting tomes,
holiday and specialty books, and staff recommendations,
among other subjects. Most of the books in those areas sell for
$1 each or $10 per bag on Saturday and Sunday.
Collectibles Corner will reside in the smaller room upstairs.
This area was a big hit and brought in lots of buyers at its
inauguration at the Spring 2014 Used Book Sale. It features
specially priced, more valuable books: first editions, out-ofprint, unique, and hard-to-find volumes.
The permanent Sale Room downstairs by the circulation desk
will be open for business as usual, with newer, high-quality
books and award winners. In Bargain Alley, near the back
door, load up with 25 cent books, or $2 a bag throughout the
Sale. Currently, book donations are suspended until sometime
after the sale.

ummertime is wrapping up and our gala
annual July 4th Parade and Picnic are
pleasant memories. This is the time of year
when many PCA memberships expire, so please
go on our website and renew: www.palisadesdc.org
then click on join/renew membership. Joining or
renewing your membership is quick and easy, and
will allow us to continue the excellent Farmer’s
Market, PCA Community Fund, 4th of July Parade,
and PCA listserv – all brought to you by your PCA!
Your membership dues create the bulk of our
operating funds for these superb neighborhood
programs. And with the ongoing possibility of
disruptive renovations at
the MacArthur Safeway
(no activity recently!), you
will want your community
group to be vigilant and
strong.

The July 4th Parade and
Picnic again was the
highlight of this year’s
Palisades neighborhood
social calendar. What a
perfect day it was! Former
PCA president Spence
Spencer and an able
committee had the rich
program planned to
perfection. The t-shirt for
this year, selected from a
large group of terrific
designs, is one of the alltime best. We can use
volunteers for both
planning next year’s
Parade, so contact me or
Anne Ourand at palisadesdc@hotmail.com if you
want to be a part of the annual event.
We have some new folks helping to guide PCA this
year. Grace Navas is our new treasurer. The
Palisades News has energetic new co-editors,
Hans Moennig and Buffie Brownstein, to publish
our wonderful newsletter. Some vacancies in our
leadership remain. We need chairpersons for our
Business, Bylaws, Publicity, Taxation, and
Zoning/Planning committees. Volunteers are
welcome!
PCA sponsored a community-wide shredding event
at the UPS Store in September, and was the only
community sponsor of a DC mayoral candidate
debate at American University.
The program planned for our October 7th general
membership meeting will feature the DC
Department of General Services explaining the
planning and construction timeline for our beloved
Palisades Recreation Center. They also sponsored
a meeting on this issue on Sept 11th, but many of
us couldn’t attend then, so will get to ask our
questions of them on October 7th. We will also vote
on our annual budget, discuss
recent zoning changes, and
perhaps even have
preliminary information on the
Trails Committee’s survey of
residents views on the various
trails in our neighborhood.

on page 7.) I hope you can
attend.
In closing, I ask you to
consider taking an active role
in your PCA. Your
membership dues are
essential to supporting the
Parade and Picnic, the PCA
Community Fund, our
Farmers Market, and our
listserv! Our Membership
Committee chair, Howard
Clare, has lots of good ideas
for reaching more Palisades
families about membership,
but could use your help with
his efforts. Some of our efforts might be perfect for
a school or Scouts’ community service project.

48th Annual July 4th Parade a Real Palisades Blast!
Many people think the July 4th parade and picnic is organized and paid for by the District of Columbia
government. That is not the case! Your very own citizens association plans and pays for every last detail and
has been for the last 47 years. Thanks to the generous business donors and sales of the annual t-shirt, the
PCA is able to raise the funds needed to put on such a
large scale event. Believe it or not, the expenses are over
$15,000! We also rely on membership dues from you to
keep the organization afloat. Are you paid up on your
dues? Check your mailing label and send them in if it’s time
for you to renew. (See Membership Renewal block on
facing page for details.) We need your support!

words
express...
...our
appreciation for the contributions made by so many of you towards
the success of the 2014 July 4th Parade. Without your voluntary
help -- in time, effort, and money -- our annual get-together simply
wouldn’t, well, get together!
Not only do we (and the kids) have a great time, but our parade
provides a unique opportunity for neighbors to meet and chat and to
experience that wonderful sense of community so rare in these
hectic times.

It’s Membership Renewal Time!
PCA memberships expire either at the end of September or
the end of March. If you have a remittance envelope in your
newsletter this month it means your membership has expired
and it’s time to renew. If you are unsure whether you are a
“September” person or a “March” person, please check your
mailing label. If your membership has expired, please use
the remittance envelope or send in your dues ($15 senior
individual, $20 senior family, $25 individual, $40 household,
$100 sponsor, $250 patron, $500 life) to PCA, PO Box
40603, WDC 20016. Please make your check payable to
PCA. You can also renew on line using PayPal or a credit
card. Go to www. palisadesdc.org and follow the easy
instructions. We still have a few PAL bumper stickers left.

Emilie Brzezinski | The Lure of the Forest
September 16- December 27
The Kreeger Museum presents an exhibition of
monumental wood sculptures by Emilie Brzezinski. This
exhibition expresses Brzezinski’s fascination with trees and
her love and respect for the environment. The Museum
pays homage to this masterful sculptor, who for over thirty
years has chain sawed and hand-chiseled tree trunks into
majestic forms. Each work exhibits beauty, grace,
sensuousness, and strength. Her imposing installations are
awe-inspiring and express the passion Brzezinski has for her
trees. Guest curator Milena Kalinovska.

In addition, GDS has once again arranged to have the INOVA
Fairfax Hospital System provide the flu vaccine for a $25 fee.
Check and cash are both accepted and medicare subscribers
simply need to bring their card with them. Please ask the
Welcome Tent to direct you to the Flu Vaccine Clinic. GDS
provides this service at the cost of the vaccine and does not
profit from this endeavor.

PCA Trails Committee
The PCA Trails Committee has met several times during the
summer. The Committee’s efforts have been focused on
developing a public opinion survey regarding the former Glen
Echo trolley right-of-way. This survey would provide an
opportunity for residents of the Palisades and surrounding
communities to voice their preferences on possible
improvements on the right-of-way, from Georgetown to just
beyond Arizona Avenue. The Committee hopes that the
survey, which will be available for completion on-line, will
attract a large number of community respondents and provide
a solid foundation for future planning activities for the right-ofway. The Committee plans to widely advertise the survey to
facilitate a meaningful level of response. The survey will be
available from October 15 through January 15 and can be
found at http://dctrailsurvey.org/.

New editors are on board. Although we have lived in the Palisades
for only seven or so years, it is now home and we are both committed
to keeping it a great place to live. Our goal for this first edition was
just to continue where Art Watson left off, producing a Newsletter
which looked as much as possible (given a new software platform)
like the June 2014 edition. But change is inevitable, and we look
forward to making the Newsletter an even more valuable asset to the
PCA and the community at large. We welcome any suggestions you
might have. We also welcome submissions of material (pictures and
text) for future editions of the Newsletter, and will make an effort to
include as many as we can. Material should be timely and of broad
