Though the name has changed, the critical area of support remains the same: tuition assistance and unrestricted giving for the high school’s greatest needs. Monsignor Donovan was a visionary and his dream of providing a continuing Catholic education for the children of Ocean and lower Monmouth Counties became a reality in the fall of 1962. Almost fifty years later, the dream of this active, dynamic pastor has culminated in a high school in which the parish and the local community take great pride. How pleased Monsignor Donovan would be to see his students living their faith on a daily basis! They build houses, mentor the young, support the elderly, embrace the needy, and feed the poor. Monsignor Donovan students are academic achievers. The Class of 2010 was awarded $19.6 million in college grant and scholarship money – more than any other high school in the Diocese of Trenton. MDHS is also the home of many outstanding and award-winning high school athletes, performers, and artists. Monsignor Donovan would be thrilled to witness our Griffin Spirit!” On behalf of Dr. Gere, I encourage you to make an investment in The Monsignor Donovan Fund. By doing so, you are helping to continue the tradition of excellence started by Monsignor Lawrence Donovan. Thank you in advance for your consideration. GRIFFIN NETWORK TODAY 3 A Message from Dr. Gere Wrestling Room—a Griffin First! Dear Graduates, Parents and Friends of SJ/MDHS: St. Joseph/Monsignor Donovan High School has a rich 48-year history. Over those years, the school has been blessed by the tremendous growth of the faculty, staff and student body, our numerous athletic and co-curricular activities and our academic program, all of which occurred in a facility that did not expand simultaneously. The infrastructure that was developed in 1962 remains virtually unchanged. There is an exception, however. Over the past several months, the passion of three MDHS wrestling coaches (Neil Saunders ’94, Keith Koehler ’95 and Brian Ventrella ’90), has energized the administration, alumni and parents to support them in a project that was once just a dream. With the help of many hands and generous hearts, a former locker room in the basement has been converted into the school’s first ever dedicated space for the wrestling team. Thanks to much hard work and commitment, the wrestlers will no longer have to practice in the school cafeteria! As you can see, the project is physically complete. So far, an estimated total of $11,200 has been donated in labor and materials to fix walls, complete plumbing and electricity, and prepare the ceilings and floors, and that doesn’t include the value of donated manpower! The school is indebted to all those individuals who believe in the wrestling program and in Monsignor Donovan High School. To financially complete this project, the school needs to raise additional funds to cover the expense of the wall mats. I invite you to lend your support to this project and to the wrestling team, whose season begins on December 18, 2010 at the Colt Classic. Thank you for your consideration. God Bless! Edward G. Gere, Ed.D. Principal * Please visit www.highschoolsports.net for the wrestling team’s complete schedule. 4 GRIFFIN NETWORK TODAY Around The Campus Stephanie Asanza (l) daughter of Steve ’82, with fellow freshmen on their first day of school.
