THE MISSION
of the Food Bank for Westchester
is to lead, engage and educate Westchester
County in creating a hunger-free environment.
The Food Bank for Westchester serves over
265 local hunger-relief programs throughout
Westchester, including food pantries, soup
kitchens, child and adult day-care centers, and
shelters. The Food Bank provides 95% of all food
distributed to hungry families, children and
seniors within our network.

P E O P L E I N N E E D T H R O U G H O U T T H E C O U N T Y.
D E A R F R I E N D S A N D S U P P O R T E R S:
When the Food Bank for Westchester took
root in the community 26 years ago, the idea
of suburban poverty was incomprehensible.
Yet hunger has established a foothold here,
and suburban poverty is now an everyday
reality. With an ever-consistent number of
residents facing chronic food insecurity, the
challenge today is to not only feed the steady
line of hungry children, seniors, working poor
and jobless adults, but to also find ways to
shorten the line for the future—tackling the
very roots of hunger.
As the backbone of the county’s emergency
food distribution system, supporting 265
front-line hunger relief programs, the Food
Bank for Westchester has evolved with the
hunger crisis. We have reacted to the reality
of suburban poverty, recently merging with
The Westchester Coalition for the Hungry and
Homeless to combine our collective resources
and further advance our fight against hunger.
Over the last year, the Food Bank has made
dramatic strides in supporting the agencies
that feed the 200,000 Westchester residents
that are food insecure. Last year alone, we
distributed 7.2 million pounds of food, including
over 1 million pounds of fresh food through
Direct Distribution Programs. As we strengthen
the agencies’ efforts to “feed the line,” they
will be empowered to focus their energies on
helping to transition people out of poverty.
For over 26 years, we have leveraged our
connections to help break the cycle of
hunger. We have brought resources together
from all segments of the county including
corporations, foundations, government,
communit y and religious groups and
individuals. As we strengthen our advocacy
role and tap new partners to accomplish our
goals, your support is even more vital.
We would like to thank you—our donors, board
members and volunteers—for your generous
contributions, and we invite you to join us as we
expand our reach, impact and influence. With
everyone at the table, we can rise to meet the
challenges we are facing so that one day, hunger
will no longer have a place in Westchester.
Sincerely,
E L L E N LY N C H

Why We’re Essential
The Food Bank for Westchester’s expertise
in procuring, warehousing and distributing
large quantities of shelf-stable and fresh
food makes it possible for the 265 frontline hunger relief programs in Westchester
County to meet demand. Our people,
programs and partners help centralize
hunger relief and our shared strengths drive
efficient, innovative solutions.
SUBURBAN POVERTY: A NATIONAL ISSUE
“Since 2000, the number of poor
people in the suburbs has grown by
64 percent, compared to 29 percent
growth in cities. The suburbs are
home to 3 million more impoverished
residents than big cities and 9.1 million
more than rural areas.”

AN ONGOING REALITY IN
WESTCHESTER COUNTY
In Westchester County, approximately 200,000
people are at risk of hunger or are facing
food insecurity
33% of the food insecure are children
25,000 grade school children in our public
school systems receive free or reduced lunch;
most of these children need food over the
weekends and on vacations
22% of the County’s hungry are senior
citizens (age 60+) and that number will
increase over the next 5 years
Reaching the new faces of hunger—working
poor and seniors—presents new challenges
as these groups are unable to use traditional
food pantries and soup kitchens due to physical
challenges or work schedules
Food insecurity causes health issues that
compromise our communities, like malnutrition
and diabetes, with everyone in need requiring
access to more fruits, vegetables, protein and
dairy products

Join the Fight: One Voice,
One Vision To End Hunger
Our donors, agencies and volunteers share our vision to feed
Westchester’s hungry. Here, they voice why giving to the Food
Bank for Westchester is a powerful way to make a positive
contribution to children, families and seniors in need.
“We discovered that the Food Bank for Westchester can
get 4 times as much for the dollar …$1,000 is $4,000
worth of food…that’s a real impact. This is an area
where you can make an immediate difference and go to
bed knowing that people nearby aren’t going hungry.”
– D AV I D J A M E S O N , D O N O R
“I just appreciate how lucky I am, and whether I’m
repacking food, answering phones or helping out
at a food drive, I’m happy to give back to those
less fortunate by volunteering forthe Food Bank
for Westchester.”
— L O U Z I M E T, D O N O R / V O L U N T E E R
“Without the Food Bank for Westchester, it would
be very difficult for food pantries like ourselves…to
provide the services that we do…”
— P E T E R M C C U E N , S U P E R V I S O R
O S S I N I N G F O O D PA N T R Y
T R I N I T Y E P I S C O PA L C H U R C H
“When you’re on a fixed
income it can be very
difficult…The only thing I
have is my social security,
so I really depend on
the pantry.”
– R E B E C C A W.,
F O O D PA N T R Y C L I E N T
The Food Bank for Westchester maximizes the value of every dollar
donated and has the capability to buy, store and transport food in
bulk, making us the most efficient and effective provider of healthy,
nutritious food to hungry people in Westchester County.
The food inventory comes from three key sources:
USDA: The Food Bank is recognized and approved by the USDA to
receive and distribute federally donated foods.
HUNGER IN WESTCHESTER
Donated: Local donations are received from Westchester businesses,
community food drives and the Food Bank’s Food Growing program.
National donations come from large food companies and distributors
via the Feeding America Network.

“I am a single dad of a
beautiful seven year-old
girl…I never expected to end
up in a situation like this. I
worked in home remodeling
for a long time and as things
got harder, life happened.
The Food Bank made a

Community Partnerships:
Helping To Break The Hunger Cycle
Every year, individuals, organizations and corporations work with the Food
Bank for Westchester to support those in their communities that need help.
VOLUNTEERS
In 2014, volunteers donated 19,882 hours by repacking bulk food in our
warehouse, helping in our offices, serving on our board of directors and
committees or assisting at special events.
In addition, many of our volunteers are people with different abilities
coming from organizations like Cerebral Palsy of Westchester, New York
School for the Deaf, Ossining Life Skills Program, Devereux Millwood and
the Point Program.
ORGANIZATIONS
Schools, synagogues, churches, community and professional organizations
raise funds and drive food donations for the Food Bank for Westchester to
benefit families in need throughout the county.
Scarsdale Middle School has a long-standing history of support for the
Food Bank for Westchester, supplying volunteers and donating food and
funds. Some of the activities included repacking thousands of pounds of
food collected over the school year in conjunction with Human Rights
Day, an Acts of Kindness project that generated over $5,000 for the Turkey
Drive, Chores for Charity which raised $7,000 to start a new food pantry for
seniors in Yonkers and a mosaic created for the Food Bank offices.
The Yom Kippur Food Drive, created over 20 years ago with the
participation of congregations throughout the Jewish community in
Westchester, has generated thousands of pounds of food donations and
thousands of dollars to support anti-hunger efforts on this day.
CORPORATIONS
Throughout the year, over 2,200 volunteers from 70 different corporations
assisted in repacking and sorting food. The highlight of the Food Bank for
Westchester’s Corporate Program is the annual Golden Scoop Competition.
In 2014, Capital One took home the coveted Golden Scoop Trophy by
packing over 1,700 pounds of beans in the hour-long “fierce but friendly”
contest. Golden Scoop helps the Food Bank get many tons of bulk product
repacked and ready for delivery to the food pantries and soup kitchens.
FOOD DONORS
The Food Bank for Westchester receives food donations from retailers and
wholesalers, corporations, churches and other organizations, as well as
dedicated individuals.
The Links of Westchester: A donor group who volunteers to repack food
and has “adopted” food pantries.
Mr. and Mrs. Josef Sink: Longtime donors who decided to use the money
they would normally spend on holiday gifts to purchase food for people
in need by shopping for and delivering food to the Food Bank office every
month.
Sam’s Club: In FY13-14, Sam’s Club was the largest retail recovery donor
for the Food Bank for Westchester, providing 104,743 pounds of food—or
87,286 meals—through its Elmsford location.
D’Agostino’s: A high-quality, consistent source for the retail recovery
efforts, D’Agostino’s Port Chester donated 44,120 pounds of food—for
36,767 meals—in 2014, and assisted essential programs, like the BackPack
Program, by running in-store donation campaigns.
