The new science wing is so attractive and impressive. Luanne Thomas Ewald’87 gave a motivating and attention-grabbing presentation. How incredible the inventions were that she spoke about. As always, Mercy’s educators are top notch. What a day to show-off, and show pride. Mercy is simply the best! Félicitations to Joyce Campbell 2009 Mercy Teacher of the Year! - Karen Valenti ’71 and Alumna Parent At the end of the school year Mercy honors one if its outstanding educators with recognition as the Teacher of the Year. I certainly remember my time at Mercy with great fondness and thanksgiving. Many different places and people have contributed to me being where I am today. Mercy, as a whole and as many individuals, certainly played a big part in that. Thank you for all you did for me and for all you continue to do for many young women. For 2009, that honor was bestowed on Madame Joyce Campbell, a master teacher of all things French! - Jenny McDevitt ‘97 M E G T U R NS 2 0 By Kathy Hattam Wisne ‘71 Congratulations to LPGA Player Meg Mallon ’81! As the co-assistant captain of the USA Solheim Team she added another victory to an already impressive list of 18 wins on tour. Meg Mallon’s golf stats will never reflect her generous heart and exceptional devotion to family, friends, and lucky us, Mercy High School. Mercy’s Meg has graced us with her endearing smile and charming warmth for 19 consecutive summers all the while supporting the school that we love. On August 10, standing side by side with brothers John and Paul Mallon, loyal veterans and supporters of her namesake event, Meg’s gracious announcement that 2010 will be her last appearance provoked sadness. Our “Monday’s with Meg” are coming to an end. Several of us at the outing were stricken with the same inspiration… let’s make the 20th Mercy Meg Mallon Golf Outing the best ever! This is a great opportunity to reunite the committees and supporters who have attended through the years, as well as a last chance for new participants to share in the fun. The date will be in June 2010, and the location will be announced soon. Mercy alumnae unite! Join in this rare opportunity to honor one of our own and celebrate this Mercy tradition. Please contact the Mercy Alumnae Office at alumnaeoffice@mhsmi.org or 248.476.3270 with suggestions and ideas. THANK YOU to all of the generous Mercy Meg Golf Outing sponsors, donors, and golfers who have helped raise more than $640,000 over the past 19 years! 3 e d u c at i n g wo m e n i n s c i e n c e New Science Labs Enable Excellent Learning by NEWSPRINT Staff Writers Shannon Carpenter '11 and Dana Fouchia '11 “It’s like Christmas,” remarks Ms. Kathy Kitzmann, referring to the unveiling of the new science wing and all of its wonders. Immediately after students left the halls last June, Mercy’s science wing underwent major reconstruction, as plans to upgrade the facilities finally became a reality. A few years ago, Mercy devised a master plan to modernize the campus and eventually prioritized the design by what was most needed at the present moment. Topping the list was the science department, which Principal Carolyn Witte described as “outdated, cramped, and inefficient.” It had been 44 years since the last renovation of the science department Mercy’s own science teachers had an active voice in the design and met frequently with the architects and administration to incorporate their desires. The $1.2 million necessary for the project was funded by Mercy’s Capital Campaign, Investing in Excellence, Building Mercy’s Future. The money and effort spent on the new science wing is clearly visible in all of the technology and equipment that will certainly benefit both staff and students. The total area of renovation covered about 14,500 square feet, which includes six science rooms, four prep rooms, two lavatories, one staff planning room and corridors. The new facilities feature air conditioning, accessible acoustical ceiling throughout, and over 5,000 feet of new windows. The classrooms have been refurnished with updated desks, stools, chairs, and barrier-free compliant work stations for experiments. Senior Katie Conely, who has enrolled in five sciences courses in her time at Mercy, is enthused about the extra space and new set-up since she believed that the old labs had no room to work effectively. Mrs. Witte also notes that the completed wing better facilitates the blending of science and technology, finally extending beyond textbook teaching into the twenty-first century. Teachers are able to incorporate technology into their lesson plans through the aid of six new data projectors, screens, and increased wireless internet connections. Each lab, with enlarged prep areas, also includes increased safety measures. Emergency eye wash stations, safety showers, and fume hoods are accessible in case of chemical accidents or fire. Students are now equipped with a complete set of microscopes and seven more accurate digital science balances for assistance and success in their lab activities. According to science teacher Mrs. Judy Pauley, the new facilities will make labs safer for students and the lab design is more similar to what students will encounter in college. All of these updates have undoubtedly excited administration, alumnae, students, staff, and especially Mercy’s science teachers. Each teacher has individual aspects of the science wing that they are excited about. For instance, Ms. Kitzmann enjoys a larger space without a wall separating her classroom from the Chemistry lab. Mrs. Pauley appreciates the deeper sinks, which will make her clean-up much quicker after animal dissections, and easy access to microscopes stored in her own room. In her eighth year teaching at Mercy, Mrs. Lisa Schrimscher is delighted to have her own classroom for the first time. The staff is certainly hoping the excitement generated by the new wing will continue to allow young Mercy women to excel in their education and prepare them for what they will experience in college science courses. Mr. John Eschelman says the labs present a greater opportunity for students to get a more hands on experience and the entire staff hopes the students will appreciate what they have been given. “If you set a goal and work at it, accomplish it.” Mrs. Schrimscher’s advice, in this case, could not be more appropriate. This is certainly what Mercy has done for its present students and future women in science. Demolition… June 25 4 July 15 July 30 - Hard Hat Tour August 15 c e l e b r at i n g wo m e n i n s c i e n c e Mercy Medicine Luanne Thomas Ewald '87 launched the Mercy school year of Celebrating Women in Science to a packed auditorium of students, parents, alumnae, and friends at the September 18th science wing dedication. She cited statistics showing women have higher grade point averages than men in math and science courses as well as shared stories of Mercy alumnae successes. Her inspiring message encouraged students to pursue an education in science, technology, engineering, and math, “You are the future scientists and doctors and engineers that will develop a cure for cancer, develop new medications, new jets, new cars, new energy sources.” Luanne is VP for Business Development and Strategic Planning for Children's Hospital in Michigan and has been recognized for her leadership by Crain’s Detroit who featured her as one of the 40 under 40. Most recently she was the recipient of a Vanguard Award. Mark Brauer Blessing September 18 - Ribbon Cutting 5 w e a r e c a l l e d to s e rv e o n e a n ot h e r Mercy High School nurtures compassionate leaders committed to addressing human needs, working for justice and serving the poor. The young women of Mercy High School do much more than study, pray, perform, lead, play, and prepare for college. THEY SERVE. THEY MAKE A DIFFERENCE. The Mercy Community Action Program promotes and encourages a commitment to volunteer service by using the greater community as a classroom. For the students at Mercy, 40 hours of community service completed over 4 years is a graduation requirement, but it is more than that, it is a part of the Mercy tradition. Most girls go far beyond the commitment to share their time and talents with those in need. The class of 2009 proudly put Mercy values into action by performing a staggering 24,527 hours of service! That’s an inspiring average of 138 hours per student. Mercy is yearly committed to lending a hand and heart to Beaumont Hospital, Benton Harbor Women’s Shelter, Mercy Education Project, Mercy Service Projects, FOCUS: Hope, St. Pat’s Food Bank, and Christmas Toy Collection. Some students take mission trips to Appalachia or Nigeria and others make the local trip to assist the elderly, tutor young people, pass out peanut butter and jelly sandwiches in the city, craft blankets for the needy and the ill, work in hospitals, shelters, churches, libraries, and soup kitchens, walk for life, cancer, diversity, hunger, and muscular dystrophy. For the past 12 years a large group of hard-working girls participate in an alternative spring break for Habitat for Humanity. They wear work gloves and boots to build, repair, paint, and do endless chores for the Habitat for Humanity homes on a mountain ridge in rural eastern Kentucky. Girls work in so many different places around the city, country, and world for that matter, that it would be impossible to name them all. Mercy girls not only give, they get. They get a strong sense of self for living out their faith and being women who make a difference. They get what it truly means to be God’s helping hands. I volunteered at an ER clinic in Nigeria during the summer, 8 hours a day, 6 days a week. It was an amazing learning experience and not only confirmed my decision to pursue science in college, but made me realize service is life. - Francisca Chiejina ‘09 I realized service isn’t something you do so that your school will allow you to graduate; service is a lifelong commitment. I know now I will always feel the need to help those less fortunate than me. I believe that if God has granted you any good fortune at all, you have a duty to help others in any way possible. - Christine Bilger ‘09 6 w e a r e c a l l e d to s e rv e o n e a n ot h e r Let charity be our badge of honor… so that it may truly be said, there is in us but one heart and one soul in God. - Catherine McCauley, Foundress of the Sisters of Mercy On completion of the house, on the last day of work in Appalachia last year, the lady receiving the home prayed, “Thank you, God. These kids did not come here on their own.” Those two sentences hit me that I was on that mission trip for a reason, I was doing God’s work being an example that hopefully others will follow. Being able to do the work of God is something that I loved and knowing I can make a difference in the world. - Marie DiPonio ‘09 Whether it is helping children learn about God or building a house in Kentucky, the service I have accomplished has benefitted me as a growing Catholic in one way or another. - Sarah Berger ‘09 The Habitat for Humanity trip greatly reflected the mission of Mercy. Our group of girls came from different racial, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds, yet we all got along. Some of us were shy, some loud, some sunny, some serious. The fact of the matter is we embraced our differences and came together to give those living in poverty and squalor other options and alternatives. - Hannah Redigan ‘09 still serving Alumnae continue to live out the Mercy value of service long after graduation. These Washington D.C. area Mercy alums enjoyed an evening of service and sociability last March, preparing and serving a dinner for over 100 homeless women at a local charity. Once the kitchen was clean, the alums headed to a local restaurant to catch up and enjoy each other's company. Mercy alumnae will meet again on November 13 to prepare and serve dinner atThriveDC. If you have a service story to share, please tell us all about it at alumnaeoffice@mhsmi.org. 7 A l u m n a e C l a s s N ot e s Alumnae and Daughters Celebrate the Mercy Legacy 2009-2010 Alumnae Association Hosted Events October 24, 2009 Mercy on the Move - Denver November 7, 2009 Mercy on the Move - Boston November 15, 2009 - Memorial Mass December 27, 2009 Alumnae Basketball Game February 2010* Lenten Evening of Reflection March 2010 Mercy on the Move - Grand Rapids April 25, 2010 - Tea for Tuition Did you know that nearly 10% of mothers with daughters currently enrolled at Mercy are alumnae?
