Victoria Hills Golf Club Matt Payne, Club Operations Director Lisa Crawford, Executive Chef Wendy Henry, Accountant Jimmy Lawrence, Superintendent 2 “Creating Better Communities” www.kolter.com www.myvictoriapark.com Spring 2015 Get to Know Victoria Hills Golf Club! T he Victoria Hills Golf Club is a prominent feature in our community, so this month, we’re sharing some lesser-known facts and course history. The Club opened for business on December 8, 2001 and has hosted many distinguished golf events including several FSGA and USGA tournaments as well as two Senior US Open qualifiers. The course averages 42,000 rounds of golf per year. Since the course opening, there have been many changes to the course layout and Clubhouse. The club originally had a triple-wide trailer that included a golf shop and a café. The current Clubhouse replaced it 2005. In 2004 during the flooding brought on by multiple hurricanes, the original bridge had to be replaced because it was completely under water. There has not been water under the bridge since. In 2010, the course’s nines were reversed — hole number 10 today was originally hole number one. Victoria Hills is an Audubon International Certified property which means that it is recognized by Audubon International as having a commitment to protecting the environment, preserving the natural heritage of the game of golf and L Matt Payne helping to enhance and protect the natural areas and wildlife habitats the golf course provides. When it comes to course accomplishments, Chris Dimarco holds the course record with a 65 and Victoria Hills resident Walt Staehli holds the record for longest hole-in-one at 295 yards on hole number 12 ... for now. Come on over and see if you can be the new record-holder! If you haven’t been out to the Club lately, we invite you to join us for a round of golf or a bite to eat. If you’re not a golfer, come out and try one of our many golf instruction programs that can introduce you to the game and new friends in no Victoria Hills Hole 9 time. Perhaps you can make history here at Victoria Hills and you’ll be featured in a future fun-facts article! — Matt Payne and Heather Laude Meet Mulligan’s Tavern & Grille’s New Chef — Lisa Crawford! isa Crawford was born and raised in New Jersey on the shore. She began cooking at a very young age, but never thought it would be her chosen profession. At 18 she took a job cooking in a popular tavern near her hometown. Three years later she moved to Southwest Florida with a friend and began waiting tables at a cafe on Sanibel Island. When the cook quit she stepped in and realized her calling. After working for ten years in various fine dining restaurants in Florida and New York she Spring 2015 Victoria Hills Hole 14 Club Operations Director attended the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, New York where she honed her skills and became a chef. She comes to us by way of John Knox Village in Orange City, Florida where she was the Executive Sous Chef. Be sure to visit Mulligan’s for lunch or one of our upcoming dinner nights and enjoy Lisa’s fine work! Lisa will be featuring great new lunch specials every day and is also a cake decorator — so we’ll be offering cake services as well. Stay tuned for more information! — Matt Payne and Heather Laude www.myvictoriapark.com 3 S Victoria Gardens Nature Trail urrounded by tall pines, dense palmettos, and scrub oaks, a one-mile trail courses through a peaceful Conservation Area in Victoria Gardens. Open to all residents of Victoria Gardens, this trail offers excellent opportunities for exercise, outdoor photography, nature study, and — perhaps best of all — a relaxing escape from the stresses of everyday life. By walking along this trail and gradually becoming immersed in the beauty and serenity of nature, a person can experience quiet contemplation and, at the same time, enjoy the sounds of songbirds in the trees and the sights of butterflies pollinating wildflowers. During regular monthly walks led by Victoria Gardens’ 2 resident Naturalists, sightings have included endangered gopher tortoises, scrub jays, and indigo snakes, as well as more common Florida wildlife such as armadillos, great horned owls, bobwhite quail, racerunner lizards, and tiger swallowtail butterflies. The footprints of more secretive animals such as bobcat, coyote, and black bear are also occasionally discovered. Sandhill cranes nest at the pond at the trail’s northern end, where the calls of 10 different frogs can be heard on summer evenings. — Article and photos by John Serrao Girl Scout Troop #241 Makes Donation to Childhood Cancer Foundation O n March 9, Girl Scout Troop #241 made a check presentation in the amount of $1,743 to the Childhood Cancer Foundation on behalf of the Troop and residents of Victoria Park from the proceeds they received from the luminary delivery. Kristy Forare, Troop #241 Leader wrote, “We are so grateful to the community members for their thoughtfulness and amazing generosity! We hope you realize how much our Girl Scout Troop appreciates the support shown to the troop and the Childhood Cancer Foundation. These donations will help many ill children and their families who are in dire need, as well as give our troop the funds for activities they’ll remember for a lifetime.” — Heather Baker 4 www.myvictoriapark.com Spring 2015 S C R A P B O OK New Year’s Eve St. Patrick’s Day Valentine’s Day Resident Dance Night - March 6 Spring 2015 www.myvictoriapark.com 5 Victoria Gardens Women’s Club 10th Anniversary Tea in the Style of Downton Abbey 108 Ladies of The Women’s Club, along with The Earl of Grantham and his butler Mr. Carson, Celebrated the 10th Anniversary of the Club.
