Professional Learning for Principals: Assessment and Accreditation Pratt USD # 382! ! Kirsten Blankenship, Asst. Principal! Southwest Elementary School 1 About Our School • K-4 Approximately 430 students! • 4 Classrooms Per Grade, 5 Classrooms in 1st Grade! • 20 students per class average! • Music / PE Daily! • Progressive Technology (5 iPad carts, 5 laptop carts, Smartboards, document cameras)! • MTSS Math and Reading! • 62% free/reduced lunch! • 10% ELL! • 23% IEP (Resource, Speech, GATE)! 2 Grade Level Collaboration • Mondays & Thursdays for 20 minutes each! • • During Recess! • Teachers meet in one of the grade level classrooms. When necessary they meet in library or conference room. Recess and bathroom/drink break is covered by Title I paras and building aide. Training began in the summer with Bobby Ashley to support rigor and relevance in the classrooms.! 11 District Goals • • • Rigor, Relevance, Relationships, Responsive Culture, Results! • “Buy in” by staff because professional development is created through shared leadership and vision. “Bumping up lessons” for a Quadrant D experience ! Instructional strategies that support the use of technology and engage students.! 12 Southwest Focus • 2013-2014 Grade level writing plan (Incorporate narrative, persuasive, opinion, and expository writing projects)! • 2014-2015 Grade levels create “Quadrant D” activities to go with each “Topic” in the new math series, “Envision, Pearson.”! • 2014-2015 Technology as a tool to create learning opportunities that are rigorous and relevant to their lives today. Projects should be engaging and of interest to students.! 13 14 Academic rigor what is it? • Collaboration! • Challenging learning experience! • Higher-order thinking! • Real-world application! • Variety of strategies and resources! • Project-based learning 15 Bloom’s Taxonomy 16 Teachers Observing Teachers • • Beginning January of 2015! • • Focus was selected by the observing teacher.! • Organized by the co-building improvement team. All teachers will observe for 30 minutes in another teacher’s classroom.!
