In Beijing, Dan was the Team Manager for the Olympic Cycling Team. He is a Level 4 NCCP Coach and Certified Teacher. Where did the idea for the "Youth Camp" come from? Exciting New Sponsor Joins Cycling B.C. We are proud to announce... A Vancouver based company, Canpages produces one of the largest telephone directories in Canada with more than 70 telephone directories servicing the entire span of the country.nada. Their 400 employees work for a product with an exceptional market range and now Cycling B.C can boast Canpages as a new official sponsor of the Provincial Team! Look for those yellow balls on the 2009 jerseys. We were looking for a way to identify talented young riders from across British Columbia. It started out as a series of camps held on weekends. The first couple of camps only attracted 8-12 kids each. We quickly decided that an even stronger approach was needed if we wanted to reach a significant number of riders. We started offering the Youth Team program to schools and quickly discovered that there was significant demand for it. Since we can run our Youth Team events within existing physical education programs, we were a natural fit for the school system. Having a exciting program that can be offered on school property really helped us to win over the kids and more importantly the schools, who's usual concerns about cycling are with regard to insurance. Offering a complete cycling package at school works incredibly well for everyone. The next step in the Youth Team program is selecting the best riders from our school programs and inviting them to join the actual Cycling BC Youth Team which we assembled for the first time in Kelowna at the BC Summer Games this past August. The team is comprised of 40 riders from across the province. We are planning to bring them together more often in 2009 with a series of training camps and competitiors. For those who are not familiar with this initiative, could you give a brief over view of what actually takes place at one of your camps? We don't worry about whether a rider comes on a mountain bike a road bike or something in between. The focus is on cycling - not equipment. In terms of talent identification, we place a large emphasis on speed and skill. We encourage kids to be athletic and agile on their bikes. If we can find young riders with well rounded athletic skills, we can make them into cyclists. We definitely aren't looking for kids who can just ride far. We can teach them to ride further after they have developed proper skills and a love for the sport. The camps were started in 2008. How many camps were offered in this first season and how many kids attended them? We had 10 camps and coached 480 kids. I coached each and every camp last year. Next year we want to recruit some additional Youth Team coaches so that we can double the number of young cyclists who have a positive first experience with the sport. We want the best riders at each school to join the Cycling BC Youth Team and get involved with training and coaching opportunities in their area. In 2009 it won't be enough to just provide a nice cycling clinic. We need a way to send the real keeners directly The Youth Team program is a quality experience for the riders. Kids are smart. If we into the sport. This is where the next generation of new came to their school and taught a clinic that focused on road or mountain biking, the coaches is really going to be instrumental in developing kids would quickly realize that you can't do either of those sports enjoyably within the the sport. We need to get some of our young adult riders confines of the school's soccer field. They would quickly see it as fake. They want to think about coaching as a possible career choice and a something that is real! The grass velodrome racing we offer in each Youth Team event way to stay active in the sport after their serious racing fits the bill perfectly. The games are short, fast and strategic. We are at the beginning of selected ability categories too, so this makes everyone feel like they can enjoy it at an exciting new era in the sport. their own level. The ability based groups also allow us to share bikes and helmets with kids who don't have their own equipment. We have plans to make that level of racing more appealing We will begin teaching the next series of Youth Team to. school visits in January. Schools and community groups Please could you explain the descriptor Youth Team. Does this mean that, as a result of attending on of the camps, young riders with potential are selected to a special team? The Youth Team has two components. The first is Talent Identification through school visits. The second component is the actual Cycling BC Youth Team which has a membership of 40 athletes who qualified through last year's BC Summer Games. In 2009 we have a few exciting programs and events planned for the team. simply need to email me youthcoach@cyclingbc.net to get the ball rolling. We need each visit to include a minimum of 30 students between the ages of 13-16. If we come to a school, we would prefer to teach an entire day's worth of physical education classes. It's a simple process and there is hardly any set-up time involved for the teachers or admistrators. Best of all, the program is free of charge.
