REPORT TO THE BOARD FROM THE CHAIR
Richard Cook
As chairman, I am extremely pleased with the
creative planning and leadership of artistic
director Tim Yakimec. In the spring 2015 edition
of Opera Canada, Bill Rankin stated, “The
opening of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor on
Apr. 18 was as satisfying an Edmonton Opera
experience as I’ve had covering the company for
a decade … .” Alexander Neef, general director of
the Canadian Opera Company flew to Edmonton
to see our Lucia and rising star Simone Osborne,
and told me that it was a production that any
opera company would be proud of. I give
full credit to Tim Yakimec for bringing this
production to our city and for assembling such
a superb cast of singers, conductor and director
who, in Mr. Rankin’s words, worked to create a
“…boisterous audience response.”
This artistic integrity and its appeal to our
audience continue to be important, and finding
the right mix of productions is difficult. After
reviewing survey feedback from both single
ticket purchasers and subscribers, I can report
that there is absolutely no consensus among our
patrons as to the type of works they would like
to see. Everything from wanting more Gilbert
and Sullivan, musicals and lighter operetta,
to requests for Wagner, Richard Strauss and
contemporary Canadian opera was presented in
the survey. The daunting challenge in artistic
direction remains: how to create a season that
appeals to ticket buyers, maintains artistic
integrity and merits, and uses available Canadian
artists. And, of course, all accomplished within a
tight budgetary framework.
I am pleased to report that once again in the
2014–15 season Edmonton Opera shows a modest
budgetary surplus. This was achieved through
efficient cost containment by management
combined with extraordinary fundraising effort
on the part of the board. It is important to note
that patron ticket sales only cover about 20
per cent of our costs, with another 30 per cent
from various grants — and a whopping 50 per
cent from fundraising. Many opera companies
in Canada operate on similar ratios, and in
some cases (Ottawa’s Opera Lyra and Hamilton
Opera being the most recent), the model was not
sustainable and the companies closed.
In light of the financial reality of the
board raising half of our budget every year
(approximately $2 million), the long-term
financial viability of the company remains the
absolute priority. As other opera companies have
sadly discovered, if you cannot pay your bills,
you are out of business.
At the beginning of the 2014/15, the
Sustainability Fund, a new fundraising intiative
where Fund members pledge to donate a
minimum of $10,000 per year for five years, was
put in place. Half of this money goes to current
operations while the other half is held to create
future working capital. I am pleased to report
that to date we have reached our first-year target
of 50 memberships, and we have set a goal of an
additional 50 this coming year.
The outstanding Edmontonians who have
contributed to the Sustainability Fund are listed
in your program, and I would encourage you to
acknowledge the contributions they have made
that enable opera lovers to continue to enjoy live
productions. The same congratulations goes
to our corporate sponsors. Please note their
names, and patronize the businesses that make it
possible for us to maintain affordable tickets for
million-dollar productions.
Thank you also to all donors and patrons for their
continuing support of Edmonton Opera. We have
a hardworking staff and board who work closely
together because we believe that real cities have
opera companies. And Edmonton is a real city.

Mainstage Season
Audiences were invited to escape with Edmonton Opera
during the 2014/15 season — onto the silver screen, into an
enchanted love story and into the psyche of a doomed lover.
The comedic, fantastic and dramatic offerings of the season
were attended by more than 15,000 people, and the additional
community and educational outreach, and continued arts
partnerships truly made this a blockbuster season.
THE BARBER OF SEVILLE
Everyone’s favourite barber got a big-screen makeover
in the season-opener The Barber of Seville. Tunes from
childhood made famous by Bugs Bunny were brought
to life in this production that sets the action in a 1940s
movie studio.
Baritone Phillip Addies did justice to Rossini’s
energetic melodies, his crafty antics ensuring that the
girl ended up with the right guy. As Rosina, mezzosoprano Sylvia Szadovszki made her Canadian debut
in a major role; the all-Canadian cast was rounded
out by Aaron Durand, James McLennan, Alexandre
Sylvestre, Cara Brown and Thomas Goerz, conducted
by Robert Dean and directed by Allison Grant.

musically in Act I, then demonstrated
how much more depth there is to
Rossini’s work in her solo in Act II.”

THE MAGIC FLUTE
Edmontonians were treated to some colour therapy
in February with Bretta Gerecke’s scenery and
lighting designs, and Deanna Finnman’s costume
designs for Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Directed by
Rob Herriot, the creative team worked to create a
production inspired by Bollywood and reminiscent
of a pop-up storybook, where elements drop down,
slide in and pop into view. This production was
conducted by Leslie Dala.
“There are two features on their own
that make this Magic Flute worth
seeing. The first is the singing of
Jessica Muirhead as Pamina. She can
really act with her voice, conveying
the emotions, and her darker, dramatic
tones suggest she has the potential
to develop into a formidable ‘spinto’
soprano. The second are Deanna
Finnman’s wonderful costume designs.
A riot of colours … some are heavily
textured, some simple, and they give
a sense of both the individual and the
ritually collective.”

The build at the Edmonton Opera Production Facility
resulted in extensive Edmonton Journal coverage,
including a timelapse video online and a two-page
spread in the paper. Volunteer photographer Nanc
Price captured more detailed timelapses with her
GoPro, and also created an infographic, displayed
at the Jube, of the man hours and personnel required
for an opera like The Magic Flute.
Jessica Muirhead as Pamina made a triumphant
Canadian return after singing overseas for years,
while Teiya Kasahara thrilled audiences as the
formidable Queen of the Night. Tenor Adam Luther
provided a solid debut in his first role as Tamino,
and as Papageno and Papagena, John Brancy and
Jacqueline Woodley added a playful element to
Mozart’s last opera.
LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR
Twenty years was worth the wait — Simone Osborne
as Lucia blew audiences away in Edmonton Opera’s
first production of Lucia di Lammermoor in two
decades. The young Canadian soprano made her
Canadian debut on the Northern Alberta Jubilee
stage, in this production conducted by Robert
Tweten and directed by Brian Deedrick.
The seasoned talent of Robert Breault and Jason
Howard, along with Adam Fisher, Giles Tomkins,
Megan Latham and Robert Clark further enhanced
Donizetti’s haunting score, with scenery and
costumes by Seattle Opera.
“[Simone] Osborne’s Mad Scene was the
tour-de-force it needs to be, beautifully
sung, convincingly and quite passionately
acted … . So don’t miss it. Then, sometime
in the future, when you go to see Osborne
starring at the height of what promises
to be a stellar career, you can turn to the
person sitting beside you and say, ‘You
know, I saw her sing her first Lucia.’”

Working with Yelp Edmonton, Lucia’s Libations
also promoted the opera at three bears in Edmonton
(BLVD, Ampersand 27 and Mercer’s Tavern), where
bartenders had created signature drinks inspired
by the opera.

PRODUCTION FACILITY
The 2014/15 season was the second full year for EO
staff in the newly renovated spaces of the production
facility, with the props area, carpentry shop, spray
booth, wardrobe room/storage and administration
offices functioning at full capacity. The majority
of effort in the first part of the season was focused
on the build for The Magic Flute, with some minor
work required on the scenery for The Barber of
Seville and Lucia di Lammermoor. The components
of The Magic Flute required the purchase of welding
equipment, which will continue to be valuable for
shop crews in future seasons. The Valentine’s Gala
stage was also built this season and will be used for
future productions. EO continues to offer fiscally
affordable scenic shop space to an expanding list of
arts companies including Alberta Opera and Theatre
Network, and to returning arts organizations
FreeWill Players, Opera NUOVA and the Singing
Christmas Tree.
FINANCE
The 2014/15 year saw Edmonton Opera continue
to contain costs by watching its expenses and cash
flow. As a result, in the 2014/15 season, expenses
decreased by a further 4% over the 2013/14 season
with production costs accounting for the largest
percentage decrease in the 2014/15 year. Over the
coming year, Edmonton Opera will continue to be
cognizant of its bottom line by ensuring expenses
are kept in line.

FUNDRAISING
Fundraising continues to be a priority, with donations
and sponsorships totaling 1,533,989; about 35 per
cent of the overall budget. The Sustainability Fund
(Premiere Circle) was fully introduced this season,
spearheaded by Gwen Horvath, Director of Fund
Development, with VIP treatment at the performances
and exclusive donor events throughout the year.
By the end of the 2014/15 season, Sustainability
Fund membership had reached nearly 50 members.
ENDOWMENT
The goal of the Endowment Fund is to raise $10
million, providing long-term stability and artistic
flexibility for the Edmonton Opera. This year, $82,601
was contributed to the fund by individuals and
businesses, and the Canada Cultural Investment Fund
added an additional $80,128 through matching funds.
Currently, the balance of the Endowment Fund is
over $4 million.
BOX OFFICE
More than 15,000 people attended the 2014/15
mainstage performances, filling about 76 per cent
of the total available seats over the course of the
season (the second balcony was not open for all
performances). The average cost of a Saturday
subscription was $295, while the average cost of a
Tuesday or Thursday subscription was $211. The
average single ticket price was $74. Full subscriptions
and Opera Duos totaled 2,721 for the season.
Between December 2014 and April 2015, the TIX
on the Square building was renovated, moving the
opera box office into a shared, central desk space area
with the Tix on the Square staff. EO administration
staff also began more Tessitura training to receive
relevant instruction specific to each department, with
the overall goal of streamlining internal procedures.
Starting in spring 2015, the Edmonton Opera and
TIX on the Square/Edmonton Arts Council started
Tessitura training, in anticipation of TIX/EAC’s
implementation of their internal system, which was
ongoing at the end of the 2014/15 season.
SPECIAL EVENTS
The closure of the Edmonton Petroleum Club
after The Barber of Seville Opera Brunch led to the
event being held at the Royal Glenora Club, which,
in addition to easy access and parking, allows for
a slightly larger room capacity. Patron feedback
concerning the move has been very positive thus far.
New co-chairs Michelle and Bob Bessette organized
the Valentine’s Gala this season at the Shaw
Conference Centre, where the theme was Starry
Night. The dinner and décor was well received, as was
the returning entertainment of the Edmonton Opera
Chorus and RCA Band, with the new addition of Citie
Ballet. Donations at the event totaled $246,420, the
highest amount ever received. Total net revenue for
the event was $339,773 (up from $204,308 in 2014).
Unfavourable weather during Opera al Fresco resulted
in the event being canceled for the first time ever,
although patrons were very good-spirited and many
braved the weather with smiles and bright umbrellas
until it was officially called off. Rain checks offered
to a production in the coming season were
readily accepted.
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
After holding The Barber of Seville Opera 101 at the
Art Gallery of Alberta, the event was moved to
Mercer’s Tavern for the two subsequent events.
The ability to order drinks and food during the panel
discussion allowed us to retain audience members
while also reaching a new audience as well.
Opera Talks saw capacity crowds in the lower-level
lobby before each performance at the Jubilee. Opera
goers were treated to complimentary discussions by
guest speakers.
Edmonton Opera was involved in Alberta
Culture Days again this year with family friendly
performances at the Winspear Centre and student
workshops at the Jubilee Auditorium.
Smaller chorus member ensembles performed at
numerous venues and events throughout the city
including caroling at City Centre Mall during the
holiday season. Edmonton Opera’s work in the
community was highlighted in a video during the
Valentine’s Gala.
Edmonton Opera celebrated Giving Tuesday for the
first time on December 2. For each donation made, an
opera ticket was donated to a child in need to see The
Magic Flute.
EDUCATION PROGRAM:
OPERA ALIVE!
This season, more than 1,300 students attended
the three education dress rehearsals, including a
number of groups in need who received free bussing
and tickets from Imperial Oil and TD Canada Trust
respectively. Educational resources such as study
guides, music clips, audio discussions and video
continue to be accessible through the Edmonton
Opera app. During the 2014/15 season, approximately
412 people from Edmonton and area, for a total
of 510 people from Alberta, used the app on their
smartphone or tablet.
Tim Yakimec and other Edmonton Opera staff
visited a number of Edmonton area schools to deliver
presentations and participate in Read-in Week.
MARKETING
Edmonton Opera saw continued advertising media
partnerships with the Edmonton Journal, Avenue
Magazine, Vue Weekly CKUA and Pattison. Online
targeted advertising saw the implementation of new
revenue tracking technology. Telemarketing continues
to prove effective during subscription renewal
campaigns.
A great partnership with the downtown Famoso
Pizzeria (Jasper Avenue and 118 Street) continued
this season, with ticket giveaways as part of their
Vino Wednesdays, and a dinner giveaway for each
performance night of the season. A new relationship
with Yelp Edmonton was also formed, culminating in
the Lucia’s Libations project at the end of the season
that saw three local bars promoting the opera through
a signature cocktail.

A new referral program was put in place during the
subscription campaign, where subscribers received a
$25 opera certificate to gift to a first-time opera goer,
and a complementary beverage at the Jubilee for
referring someone.

about the opera as people share their at-the-opera
photos on their own channels.
COMMUNICATIONS
Since the new anti-spam legislation was introduced
in July 2014, Edmonton Opera adjusted its privacy
policy accordingly.
New this season, promotional videos of each opera
were created before opening night, using highlights
from dress rehearsal. These videos have been received
very well, and are some of the most-viewed videos on
Edmonton Opera’s YouTube channel.
Edmonton Opera also expanded its social media
presence by creating an Instagram account, where
followers and engagement have grown steadily (over
150 followers by the end of the season). Twitter and
Facebook also remain popular, with an average of
91,000 people seeing EO tweets during the high points
of the season, and 31,898 people seeing EO Facebook
STAFF
Staff retention has been very high, with few changes
including Celyne Runzer hired as a box office clerk,
moving to the fund development department late in
the season as the fund development assistant. Katie
Gallin was subsequently hired as box office clerk.

Opinion
In our opinion, the summary financial statements derived from the audited financial statements of the
Edmonton Opera Association for the year ended June 30, 2015 are a fair summary of those financial
statements, in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations. However,
the summary financial statements are possibly misstated to the equivalent extent as the audited financial
statements of the Edmonton Opera Association for the year ended June 30, 2015.
The possible misstatement of the audited financial statements is described in our qualified audit opinion in
our report dated October 28, 2015. Our qualified audit opinion is based on the fact, that in common with
many non-profit organizations, the Edmonton Opera Association derives revenue from the general public
in the form of donations and sponsorships, the completeness of which is not susceptible to satisfactory
audit verification. Accordingly, verification of these revenues was limited to the amounts recorded in the
records of the Edmonton Opera Association. Therefore, we were not able to determine whether any
adjustments might be necessary to donations and sponsorships revenue, excess of revenues over
expenses, and cash flows from operations for the years ended June 30, 2015 and June 30, 2014, current
assets as at June 30, 2015 and 2014, and net assets as at July 1 and June 30 for both the 2015 and
2014 years. Our qualified audit opinion states that, except for the possible effects of the described matter,
those financial statements present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of the Edmonton
Opera Association as at June 30, 2015 and the results of its operations and its cash flows for the year
ended June 30, 2015 in accordance with Canadian accounting standards for not-for-profit organizations.
