It was a very special service led by Pastor Terry Kelly with a wonderful turnout of 64 people including 2 former pastors of our church. Reverend Charlie Hess, a former District Superintendent with 54 years in ministry, gave the sermon titled “Because You Have Believed”. The sermon focused on how our church has served God and our community and how our steadfast belief has allowed our church to survive for so long. A dish to pass dinner followed in the social hall and was a wonderful time of fellowship! It was a tender homecoming and a joyful reunion for many who had been away. Old friends were greeted with open arms and much warmth. Many expressions of gratitude were shared as to how lives have been touched over the years by the church and its members. Please get out and VOTE and when you do please think about a few facts and then decide who you want to represent YOU! I have voiced a few concerns at the Public Forum portion of the BOE meetings recently. • Past and present safety issues regarding our students at Tuscarora (to this date not one board member has asked me what they are). • The BOE president telling me that I could not meet with the board or any members in regards to this and other concerns because I am a part time employee (I reminded her that I am a taxpayer). • I had to tell the BOE that they were holding ILLEGAL executive sessions. (In these sessions, employee’s careers and student’s futures are discussed and decisions are made with NO minutes being taken, which the law states has to be done). • I have also informed those attending the meeting that our superintendent has applied for and was not accepted for the position of superintendent in other districts twice in the past few months. (So why don’t they grant him his wish and let him go. That decision is coming up in June). Besides EVERYONE I talk to agrees that the superintendent should reside in the district, (board members should heed this as it is what the TAXPAYERS want and you represent them). Therefore I recommend voting for Mary Beth Grace and Derek Burrell. If you do not want to vote for both of them, then you need to ask yourself which incumbent you want to stay in office. We need to move forward for the sake of our children’s future! Please Vote on May 20th. This framework will drive Social Studies curricular changes moving forward. The Social Studies department throughout the district will be examining the framework throughout the summer months and next school year to determine the action steps moving forward towards implementation in the Addison Central School District. Overview New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework (“NYS Framework”) is anchored in the New York State Common Core Standards for Literacy and Writing and New York State Learning Standards for Social Studies. These standards serve as a consistent set of expectations for what students should learn and be able to do so that we can ensure that every student across New York State is prepared to be an active and engaged citizen ready to pursue college or a career. The framework fuses the New York State Learning Standards, key ideas, conceptual understandings, and content sequences into a single document. Each course sequence is similar to that of the previous Social Studies Resource Guide with Core Curriculum. • Unifying Themes based primarily on the National Council for the Social Studies themes serve to unify ideas and concepts across all grade levels. • The Common Core Literacy Skills and Social Studies Practices include the skills and habits of mind that should be developed and fostered using the content for each grade. • Key Ideas and Conceptual Understandings for each grade level with supporting Content Specifications are incorporated. • The College, Career and Civic Life Framework notably the Inquiry Arc is referenced as a curriculum development resource. Reading my husband articles and seeing how the Lord has been using them for His kingdom, it seems good to me with God’s help, to write devotionals once a month dedicated to just us women. I pray that this will encourage and help you in your daily walk with the Lord. A mother’s prayer Have you ever asked; does God hear my prayer? In the bible we can see the story of a woman named Hannah. We can find her story in the book of 1 Samuel chapter 1. A little review of her story: Hannah couldn’t have children, because the Lord closed her womb and for this reason the Bible tells us in verse 7 that “she did not eat”. In verse 10 we see that she was in bitterness of soul. But in the middle of her situation, Hannah prayed to God: .. “O Lord of hosts, if You will indeed look on the affliction of Your maidservant and remember me, and not forget Your maidservant but will give Your maidservant a male child, then I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life, and no razor shall come upon his head.” From this prayer, we discover some Biblical points: First, God should be our first resource. - In her desperation, Hannah prayed to God, to the only one who could help her. What a great testimony for everyone around her, especially for us. Hannah chose the best. Second, We should know who we are before God. - Hannah came to God with all humility. She called Him “Lord of Host” meaning that God is not just the creator of the earth and everyone on it, but Creator of everything; Hannah’s lives and ours are in His hands. Then she called herself God’s maidservant. Did you know that a maid servant works constantly to please her master? Wow! Meditate on this. Can we call ourselves maidservants of God? Third, we must be confident that our requests have been heard. After praying, the Bible tells us in verse 18 than Hannah went her way and ate, and her face was no longer sad. Hannah was sure that the Lord of Host heard her request and more than that, she was encouraged by knowing that whatever God decided to do, it was BEST. Go in peace sister, God knows what is best for you as well. Fourth, Leading our children to God is the best thing we can do for them. Hannah promised to God that she will give her child back to Him. She knew that her child was going to be secure, safe and especially loved by God and more than in any other place he was going to find the protection and the guidance he would need for life. Are we are teaching our children who God is? Everything began with an honest and a simple prayer, of a maidservant of God. So, does God hear our prayers? the answer, Yes!! we just need to ask Him. - by Yane Price Any questions, comments or prayer request? Canisteo Valley 4-H Stars Visit State Capitol The Canisteo Valley 4-H Stars are a busy bunch of kids who are interested in raising livestock and/or rabbits and poultry. They raise funds every year that allow them to travel out of our area to visit other farms and to learn more about agriculture in general. This year they visited Albany and its neighboring counties. In the wee hours of March 27th, 19 Canisteo Valley 4-H Stars, with 10 family members/chaperones, struck out in a “car-cade” toward our state capitol. During a tour of the Capitol Building, the club learned many fascinating historical facts about its construction. They climbed the Million Dollar Staircase, which is a magnificent work of art and architecture that is made of red sandstone that was shipped from Scotland in the late 1800’s. Over 600 faces are carved into the staircase’s ornamental stonework—most are famous people in history, while others are unknown. Before the NY Senate convened for the day, the visitors were able to sit in the chamber gallery and listen to the tour guide explain Senate procedure. On the other side of the hall, as the group stepped quietly into the Assembly chambers to observe the proceedings there, they were beckoned by our own representatives—Assemblymen Phil Palmesano and Joe Giglio—down to the chamber floor. This opportunity was a treat delivered graciously by the three Assemblymen from our area that represent the districts: Assemblyman Phil Palmesano, Assemblyman Joe Giglio, and Assemblyman Bill Nojay. The group was ushered into the Assembly chamber visitor’s area by our state Sargent-At-Arms. This area is directly behind the Assembly members and faces Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, allowing as near participation in the proceedings as possible. Assemblyman Palmesano and Assemblyman Giglio explained what was happening and answered dozens of questions from the curious group. The club was able to see a bill discussed and then voted upon. At the appropriate time, the Canisteo Valley 4-H Stars were formally introduced and welcomed by the New York State Assembly! The Canisteo Valley 4-H Stars’ visit to the Capitol Building was greatly enhanced with the kind help and support of Assemblyman Palmesano and his staff and by the tremendous hospitality shown by Assemblymen Giglio and Nojay and Senator O’Mara. The group truly appreciates what they do for all of us! After that exciting experience, the group was ready for a good lunch, followed by time spent at the New York State Museum. Among the favorite exhibits there were the Iroquois longhouse and the Wooly Mammoth displays. The following morning, it was “rise and shine” and tank up on a good breakfast, because the day would be spent outside in the cold rainy March weather. First stop was Kinderhook Farm, Valatie, NY. The farm raises lamb and beef that is marketed directly to the consumer, as well as to restaurants in NYC. The club learned much about sheep husbandry and grazing. They were acknowledged by the farm’s flock guardian dogs and listened to Anna, flock shepherdess/manager explain grazing, selection, and breeding practices. After leaving Kinderhook, the tour headed farther south to Copake, NY—home of Elite Dairy, premier Brown Swiss breeder. Here, the club visited some of the finest Brown Swiss cattle in the country and in the process learned some important calf care practices. Herdsman Steve Main reminded the young farmers-to-be that every sneeze, cough, and loose “poop” warrants immediate attention. Whether you are caring for the $5,000 calves he was charged with or your own 4-H project or the neighbor’s livestock you may be asked to help with, paying attention to any subtle changes in basic bodily functions can mean the difference between success and disaster. Each year Steuben County 4-H members are encouraged to participate in the Hoard’s Dairyman cow picture judging contest—a national contest that has run continuously for the last 75 years or so and is eagerly awaited by cattle evaluating fans from around the world. The 2013 Brown Swiss class was comprised of Elite Dairy cows! After enjoying the wonders of the Elite Dairy, it was time to head west toward home and to begin to make plans for the NEXT trip. These excursions are made possible by community support of the club’s fundraising efforts. The annual sausage sale is a major source, and the club wishes to thank all of those who help in any way. WWW.townofrathbone.com ADDISON POST Saturday, MAY 17, 2014 Page 14 Dear Editor: In less than a week we will be going to the polls in order to vote for the school budget, and for two seats on the Board of Education. I ask you all to consider what has transpired over the past four years before you make your decisions. If you are content with the districts spending habits, your children’s experiences in school, and the increases in your school tax bill, then you need to vote for Brian Crane and Lucinda Sutton. They are both wonderful people, and their track records speak for themselves. I feel that we need to do a better job of controlling our spending habits within the district. I also feel that we need to help the teachers and staff enhance our children’s educational experiences. Our children’s teachers are not being given the proper ability to do their jobs. I stand for change, and will never be considered a “yes-man”. I will battle for your children, and will accept nothing less than what they deserve. I will also offer that I have never seen anybody’s taxes decrease, when their tax assessment rises. Furthermore, there are other local school districts that have actually proposed decreases to their budgets. It’s not enough to simply say that we can do better; at this point we have no choice. I will not ask any of you for your vote, but I will ask that all of you come out and vote. It is important now, more than ever, that you speak on behalf of yourself and the students. Respectfully yours, Derek L. Burrell Dear Editor My name is Brian Crane and my five year term on the Board of Education is expiring at the end of June 2014. Upon reflection of the past ten years that I have served on the school board, the decision to run for re-election was easy. Let me formally announce that yes, I am running for re-election and would be honored to continue to serve the Addison Central School district as a member of the Board of Education. The school district has seen much growth and progress over the past decade and I feel proud to be a part of the successes that we, as an entire school community, have achieved. Remember, this is a true team effort and without the support and commitment of the staff, students, parents, taxpayers, and the community at large, the school board’s duties become exponentially more difficult. We are lucky here in Addison to be able to “get things done” because of this support. For those that may not know me, let me review my background a bit and give a short resumé of my qualifications, experiences, district successes, and family. I have been a lifelong resident of Addison, graduating from our high school in 1986. I currently am the successful owner and operator of Crane’s Ventures (formerly Crane’s Towing) and Crane’s Auto Sales. I am presently working on and looking forward to, bringing my businesses back to Addison. As a local business owner, ten year member on the Board of Education, and volunteer experience in both youth softball and soccer, I feel I can offer the school district unique experiences and assistance in many areas of school district governance. The recent successful completion of our Phase I capital project and the startup of Phase II is but one key area where I can provide guidance and assistance. These are difficult times in public education, no doubt. With all of the recent changes to standards, curriculum and assessments, more accountability throughout the system, and the challenging economic climate, the need for experience on the Board is more critical than ever. Lastly, I have the full support of my family to continue this important and critical work. Having two children, one in college and one still in high school, helps me to better understand the current realities of school age students, parenting, and balancing work with family life. On May 20th, the voters of our community will be asked to vote on the 2014-2015 school budget and for two open seats on the school board. I am asking for your vote on one of these seats as I believe I can provide the leadership necessary for continued success. Thank you in advance for your support. Sincerely, Brian Crane ?7? %5$1'1(:(48,12; $//:+((/'5,9( 12 021( '2:1< 8MZ5WV\P 4MI[M8IaUMV\ )VL?M5MIV 6W5WVMa,W_V VW3D\PHQW'RZQ 6HFXULW\'HSRVLW'RZQ 3$6DOHV7D['RZQ 5HJLVWUDWLRQRU7LWOH)HHV'RZQ $FTXLVLWLRQ)HHV'RZQ 'RZQ3D\PHQW ,W_V 78/28 ,1672&.$77+,635,&( (TXLSSHG:LWK )TT?PMMT,ZQ^M *T]M\WW\P.WZ8PWVM <QT\<MTM[KWXQVO;\MMZQVO?PMMT )]LQW;a[\MU?Q\P=;*+, +Z]Q[M 8W_MZ?QVLW_[4WKS[3MaTM[[-V\Za :MIZ?QXMZ 1SRXL1MPI0IEWI)UYMRS\17640IEWI6IWMHYEP;MXL%TTVSZIH'VIHMX 5YEPMX]9WIH:ILMGPIW &+(9<&2/25$'2 *0&6,(55$ ?,+aT;XL)QZ 5QTM[ -`\+IJB;4-8SO > :MUW\M;\IZ\ ;MM8QK\]ZM[I\____IT\MZ[KPM^aKWU ;)4- 8:1+- 78/98 *=A .7: 8MZ 5WV\P UWV\P[(!_\I`ZMONMM[LW_VIXXZW^MLKZMLQ\ 5QTM[ ;)4- 8:1+- 78/98 *=A .7: 72<27$5$9 72<27$&$05</( +aT)]\W+,+Z]Q[M 7VTa5QTM[ ;)4- 8:1+- 78/98 *=A .7: 8MZ 5WV\P UWV\P[(!_\I`ZMONMM[LW_VIXXZW^MLKZMLQ\ ;MM8QK\]ZM[I\____IT\MZ[KPM^aKWU ;)4- 8:1+- 78/9' *=A .7: -((3/,%(57</,0,7(' +aT)]\W8_Z?QVLW_[ 7VTa5QTM[ `4MI\PMZ8_Z;]VZWWN8_Z ;MI\5QTM[ ;)4- 8:1+- 78/9' *=A .7: 8MZ 5WV\P UWV\P[(!_\I`ZMONMM[LW_VIXXZW^MLKZMLQ\ ;MM8QK\]ZM[I\____IT\MZ[KPM^aKWU ;)4- 8:1+- 78/98 *=A .7: &+(9<&$0$5266 +aT)]\W;+Z]Q[M8_Z ?QVLW_[5QTM[ > :ITTa;\ZQXM[;XL 5IV]IT7VTa 5QTM[ ;)4- 8:1+- 78/9' *=A .7: 8MZ 5WV\P UWV\P[(!_\I`ZMONMM[LW_VIXXZW^MLKZMLQ\ 8MZ 5WV\P UWV\P[(!_\I`ZMONMM[LW_VIXXZW^MLKZMLQ\ 1,66$1$/7,0$ ;MM!8QK\]ZM[I\____IT\MZ[KPM^aKWU 8MZ 5WV\P UWV\P[(!_\I`ZMONMM[LW_VIXXZW^MLKZMLQ\ +21'$$&&25'/; ;MM8QK\]ZM[I\____IT\MZ[KPM^aKWU UWV\P[(!_\I`ZMONMM[LW_VIXXZW^MLKZMLQ\ `+aT)]\W8_Z?QVLW_[ +Z]Q[M7VTa5QTM[ ;MM8QK\]ZM[I\____IT\MZ[KPM^aKWU 8MZ 5WV\P ;MM8QK\]ZM[I\____IT\MZ[KPM^aKWU ;)4- 8:1+- 78/9' *=A .7: 8MZ 5WV\P UWV\P[(!!_\I`ZMONMM[LW_VIXXZW^MLKZMLQ\ 5RXWH(ONODQG3$ ZZZZDOWHUVFKHY\FRP ADDISON POST Saturday, MAY 17, 2014 Page 15 Open: Monday-Saturday 8:00am to 6:00pm Rt. 49, Nelson, PA 16940 Phone: 570-827-2455 1-866-339-4331 Financing Available to Qualified Buyers. Sunday Morning Worship @ 11 AM; Sunday Evening @ 6 PM. Pastor Scott Ball, (570) 835-0259. www. elklandbaptistchurch.org Are You Trying Too Hard? In little league baseball, when a young player is at bat, the coach may tell him, “Don’t try to kill the ball; just meet it.” When you swing as hard as you can, you lose control and you may just strike out. Sometimes in our daily lives we may strike out. Perhaps we’re trying too hard to please someone, or to succeed at something. In many instances trusting in God, and being yourself, may be all that is needed to be respected and successful. God doesn’t want us to be lazy, and He does expect us to do our best; but accepting our potential, and not jeopardizing our moral standards are important. In life, everyone occasionally strikes out, but learning from our mistakes and not dwelling on them, makes one a better person. Remember the Lord in everything you do, and He will show you the right way.
