p. Welcome Messages
WELCOME MESSAGES
It’s Fair Time! On behalf of Smithers Town Council and
our entire community, it’s my pleasure to welcome you
to the Bulkley Valley Exhibition, our valley’s largest
and most anticipated annual event.
This year’s theme, “Going Hog Wild,” expresses the
exuberant spirit of the fair. Whether it’s the cowboys
riding bulls down at the rodeo, kids running from
ride to ride at the midway, or the actual hogs trying to
escape their owners over at the 4H ring, the Fair is a
place to cut loose enjoy a few days among friends and neighbours. It’s also a chance
to celebrate our valley’s rich agricultural heritage.
Each year, dozens of volunteers work tirelessly to make the Fair a success. If you see
one of them around the fairgrounds, please take a moment to thank them.
See you down at the Fair!
Taylor Bachrach, Mayor
97 years of the Bulkley Valley Fair! We’ve come a long
way in that time, and agriculture is still at the forefront
of our Valley lifestyle and economy. This year’s theme,
“Going Hog Wild at the 97th Annual BVX!”, is a great
reminder for us to let loose a little at the fair. Whether
it’s the great food, top quality entertainment, or the
many exciting events, the fair is a great opportunity to
indulge a little after a summer of hard work and play in
the forests and fields of our beautiful Bulkley Valley.
It’s an exciting time for our agricultural community, and the fair is always a great
reminder of the wealth of local talent we are blessed with. The exhibits from
our creative community are always a highlight, showcasing the fantastic results
achieved by innovative use of our local resources.
I am very happy to welcome all to the 97th Bulkley
Valley Exhibition. Agriculture has such a strong
tradition in the Bulkley Valley, one that I know we all
feel proud of.
at the BV Fall Fair. “Going Hog Wild” is a great theme for the fun that is ahead!
A huge thanks to the all of the volunteers whose many hours of tireless effort keep
the show rolling, year after year. And to all of the participants, best of luck, and
have fun! On behalf of Council and staff of the Village of Telkwa, we hope you have
a fantastic time at the fair, and look forward to seeing you there!!
Sincerely, Mayor Darcy Repen, Telkwa

I look forward to enjoying a weekend at the fairgrounds with all of you and
congratulations to the organizers and volunteers that work so hard to make this

The fall fair is an opportunity to embrace this history
and celebrate our natural resources with friends and

the competitions, participate in 4H, or enjoy the music,
rodeo or other events, there is something for everyone
And on your behalf, I will continue to encourage the provincial government to
support all those involved in the agriculture sector and to protect agricultural
land.
On behalf of the Regional District of Bulkley Nechako
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you
to the 2016 annual Bulkley Valley Exhibition.. This
years theme going hog wild fits very well with the
regional districts agricultural focus. The Regional
District of Bulkley-Nechako Board of Directors has
recently formed an Agriculture Committee in an
effort to support and build Agriculture opportunities
throughout the region and continue to promote
the sector in our area. Every year the Bulkley Valley Exhibition proves to be a
spectacular event that creates strong regional ties by gathering and displaying the
successes of our region, its people, their products, livestock, crafts and incredible
hard work and talents
On behalf of the Village of Hazelton, I convey a warm
country welcome to everyone attending the 2016
Bulkley Valley Fall Fair.
I wish the best of luck to all event participants and a special thanks to the many
volunteers for their time and dedication to making this yet another successful Fall

Trainer of the North
Trainer of the North
The Challenge is back for the seventh year and we
are excited to showcase the trainer’s talents. This
year we have last year’s winner and two returning
trainers from previous years. The trainers are
Severin Pederson from Black Creek, BC, Sarah
Newman from Kamloops, BC, and Cory McAllister
from Red Deer, Alberta. The three judges Frances
Teer, Ben Gumm and Larry Wierenga back from
last year. The horses are from a local horse farm
“Just Wishin’ Quarterhorses” owned by Tom and
Donna Davidson, in Houston. They provided the
great horses in 2014 and 2015 and we hope they will
be able to provide us with horses for the next few
years.
The Trainers are competing against each other
to showcase their ability to train a horse in a very
short amount of time in front of an audience while
teaching the audience as well. This not a simple task,
and we applaud their efforts. Keep in mind that the
training is mostly about the horse and its ability to
be taught in such a short time frame.
TRAINING TIMES
• Thursday: 3pm–6pm
• Friday: 9am–12pm and 3pm–6pm
• Saturday 9am–12pm, 7:30 pm final (indoor arena)
SEVERIN
PEDERSON
Severin grew up working on a horse ranch, and has
always had a great passion for horses. As a young
man he competed in many rodeo events including
roping and steer wrestling. He won many all around
championships in 1992, the Junior world timed event
champion and the 1993 Arkansas High School Steer
wrestling Champion. He won a full scholarship
through rodeo to Odessa College in Texas.
Severin is an up and coming gifted horse trainer.
His lifelong quest for horse knowledge brought
him to Doug Mills who introduced him to Natural
Horsemanship, giving him the extra edge. He
continues to take clinics to develop his skills.
Severin has competed in many trainers’ challenges
including the 2011. 2012, 2014 and 2015 ones at
the BVX, as well as 2010 and 2011 at the Rafter
G Challenge in Fort St John. He put in solid
performances in them all and is a crowd favorite.
Severin won both the 2014 and 2015 Trainer of
the North Challenges. Severin has built his own
program based on timed release and building a solid
foundation. A lifetime of experience has made him
efficient, sharp, firm and yet compassionate. The
Pederson Family owns and operates the Bear Creek
Ranch in Black Creek, B.C.

with all equine athletes. Cory is currently training

Light Horse Show Rules
2016 BVX Light
Horse Show
August 25-28
Welcome everyone to the BVX Light Horse show
which has been going on since the Fall Fair began in
1919. Amazing isn’t it? This show has always had light
horses included as one of the divisions and has evolved
into what it is today. We continue to grow and change.
People want to see what horses are still being used for in
the 21st century, so, as the Light Horse Show committee,
we attempt to provide classes for you, the exhibitor, to
show your horses in the best light possible. We also hope
to educate the public about light horses as you showcase
your animals, and your skills. With that in mind we want
to thank you, the exhibitor, our ground crew, volunteers
and sponsors for supporting this endeavor and hope
your experience at the 2016 Bulkley Valley Exhibition
Light Horse show will be one to remember.
