Welcome
W
elcome to Petoskey’s Festival on the Bay. We hope
you can slow down, relax, and enjoy a weekend of
great music, great food, and great fun along Little
Traverse Bay.
This is a milestone year; Festival on the Bay is now ten years old.
I’ve been with this event from the very beginning and have watched
it grow and evolve to become what we wanted it to become.
The idea for a festival for Petoskey came in 1999 when a
consultant hired by Downtown Petoskey said our town needed a
signature festival. But what was Petoskey’s signature? We debated
this for some time. Petoskey Stones and Hemingway were frontrunners as festival themes, but every conversation seemed to come
back to ‘the bay.’ Bayside living is the thing that makes Petoskey so
special and Little Traverse Bay is the backdrop for most of what we
do here. Thus, our signature festival became “Festival on the Bay.”
Complementing the theme is the perfect venue, Bayfront Park.
The City of Petoskey has taken great care to create one of the nicest
waterfront parks you’ll find, and the festival gives us a chance to
showcase that park to our guests. Plus, it gives our local residents
a chance to spend the weekend on the bay enjoying these great
amenities.
Festival programming has changed over the years, but music
has always been an integral part of the event line-up and is now
really the festival’s centerpiece. We showcase local and regional
bands and always bring in some interesting act known on a more
national stage. Another constant for the ten years has been the
Downtown arts and crafts show, held on Saturday of the festival.
Other events have come and gone over the years, but we’ve always
presented quality entertainment packaged around our famous
Million Dollar Sunsets.
As the festival matures, my favorite part to watch is the steady
growth of community engagement. Yes, Festival on the Bay is
designed as a way to promote Petoskey in the late summer and to
bring guests to our town. To do this though, we knew from the
beginning that we needed the community’s support. We’ve often
used the phrase, “A festival by the community for the community.”
We knew we needed our local residents behind us before we could
begin attracting guests from farther reaches. You’ll see many of
our events are presented by local organizations and our vendors are
local businesses, and our volunteers are community leaders. That
makes Festival on the Bay a true community event that has grown
to become a statewide destination.
I extend my heartfelt thanks to all of those volunteers, the
committee members, the City of Petoskey, the sponsors and
vendors, and the residents who have been part of the festival for
the past ten years. Thanks also to our Festival Coordinator, Kathy
Bardins, who has added her creative touches to the festival over
the years. And thanks to the chamber staff who go way above and
beyond their traditional work to make the festival a success. We’re
proud of our event and look forward to the next ten years.

Musical Entertainment

BAYSIDE BEVERAGE AND FABIANO BROTHERS
D
ance, jam and groove by the bay…
Here are the 11 bands that will rock
the Entertainment Tent this year on
Friday and Saturday. Performers will start
at 5 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday
and play until midnight both nights. The
entertainment tent is located in the Ed White
Ballfield.
Paper Plane Pilots of Traverse City. This
dynamic 4 piece band comprised of Drums,
Lead Guitar, Bass Guitar and Lead Vocals
entertains the audience with Classic Rock
such as AC DC, Billy Idol, ZZ Top, Bob Seger,
Cream as well as new music by Seether and
Finger Eleven.
Friday, August 17
5 p.m. – Ribo & the Flavinauts - Formerly
Acoustic Stew, now Ribo & the Flavinauts,
the band has enjoyed over a decade of
musicianship and entertaining in Northern
Lower Michigan. They cover a wide variety of
bands from The Cure to The Grateful Dead.
Jelly Roll Blues Band
6:15 p.m. – Jelly Roll Blues Band has been
a longstanding favorite band of locals and
tourists in Northern Michigan, performing
throughout the area for over 25 years,
entertaining people of all ages with their
fascinating blend of multiple styles of music,
featuring blues, rock, jazz, and swing.
Brent James and the Contraband
10:30 p.m. –Brent James and the
ContraBand. Classic rock influenced with
a modern rock twist, shaken up and poured
into a shot glass full of groove. This band
sets the standard in performances. With
the slick soulful sounds of Brent James to
the pure groove of the ContraBand you will
understand why they have opened for and
supported such greats as Billy Squier, Alice
Cooper, Ted Nugent and Whitesnake.
Saturday, August 18
Noon – DJ Steve Dub began collecting vinyl
at a young age, from world music and reggae
to electronic and funk. Born and raised in
Flint, Michigan, Steve has had a long history
of DJing and collecting vinyl.
8 p.m. – Petoskey High School
Steel Drum Band
9 p.m. – Ten to Midnight formed in 2011
by veteran musicians from bands such as
Nancy’s Fury and The Push of Petoskey and
Hipps-N-Ricco
Ten to Midnight
2 p.m. –Hipps-N-Ricco are based out of
Northern Michigan and are quickly rising
in popularity! They are a “Blues Duo” that
produces a lot of sound. “Ricco” (Eric Jaqua)
plays Guitar (Electric/Acoustic), sings with
conviction and lays down GROOVY BEATS
with the revolutionary “FOOTDRUMS.”
Background Vocals, Keyboard, Ion Harp
Holder (Harp Rack) and “Seasoned Pro”
Harmonica licks blown by the one and only
Hipps! (Charlie Witthoeft)
4:30 p.m. – Boyne River Remedy. Since
its inception, the band has been gigging
regularly in Petoskey, Bellaire, and Boyne
City. Their high-energy, positive show has
proven popular with audiences of diverse
ages and backgrounds, and dancers from six
to seventy have populated their dance floors.
The chemistry between the band members
is obvious and they work hard to engage
audiences. The Boyne River Remedy is the
cure for the common rock band.
6:30 p.m. – Born Suspect. In February of
2011, Petoskey locals Tommy Behan (guitar)
and veteran musician & music instructor
Chris Koury (vocals / guitar) formed a local
gig-working duo under the moniker DEUX.
Their musical tastes, playing styles, and
straight-up love for music clicked right away.
The band draws influence from Stevie Ray
Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin and
The Allman Brothers Band. Koury’s sultry
vocals, guitar chops, and absolute love of
all things rock’n’roll, all backed by a heavy
rhythm trio and driving guitar, is what
makes Born Suspect, well, suspect. . .
8 p.m. – Larry McCray is one of a handful
of talented blues performers leading the genre
across boundaries and into the new century.
McCray’s savage blues-rock guitar and
warm, soulful vocals have drawn attention
worldwide. His career highlight was when
he was honored
as the Orville
Gibson 2000
Male Blues
Guitarist of the
Year. Jeff Beck
and Eric Clapton
were nominated
as well. Let’s
welcome Larry
back to the
Festival on the
Bay stage!
Larry McCray
5
10 p.m. – Don Kinsey Band – Donald Kinsey is an
American guitarist and singer, best known as a member
of The Wailers Band, the reggae backing group for Bob
Marley & The Wailers. Kinsey is one of three sons of
the late Chicago blues
performer, Big Daddy
Kinsey. He is a member of
The Kinsey Report, which
he formed in 1984 with
his brothers Ralph Kinsey
and Kenneth Kinsey, plus
Ron Prince. Previously he
had toured and recorded
with Albert King, Peter
Tosh, Bob Marley &
The Wailers and Roy
Buchanan.

Celebration
of the sunset
S
unset viewing is one of the most
popular and affordable pastimes for
families and individuals, especially
along Little Traverse Bay, with its “million
dollar sunsets.” From purple to deep pink,
bright orange and soft yellow, myriad colors
light up the sky each clear evening at sunset
time. So it’s only natural that Festival on
the Bay includes a celebration of those
spectacular evening displays.
The Celebration of the Sunset is held
on both Friday and Saturday nights of the
Festival beginning at 7 p.m. each evening.
Highlighting the celebration on Friday,
August 17 will be the annual performance
by the highly regarded Petoskey Steel
Drum Band. The band will perform in
