OPENS
WITH A
BANG
Barbados host Guyana
in an international
friendly match on
openning day.
T
he opening of the Barbados
Football Association’s season
began with a highly anticipated match between the national
teams of Barbados and Guyana on
Sunday February 1st, 2015.
BFA President Randy Harris with President of Stanno Teamwear USA Erwin Boonacker.
B
arbados Football Association
held a press conference at the
beginning of the 2015 season to
launch its partnership with “Stanno”
a European kit supplier from the
Netherlands.
The Barbados senior men’s football
team appeared in their new gear for
the first time when they came up
against the United States Virgin Islands in their 2018 FIFA World Cup
Qualifier at the National Stadium on
Sunday March 22, 2015.
The BFA has entered into a deal which
will see all of the country’s national
teams and premiership division clubs
equipped with team uniforms and
equipment.
Chief Executive Officer of StannoUSA,
Erwin Boonacker has titled the part-
nership as a “win-win” situation, stating, “the BFA is happy with the quality
and the deal and we are happy that all
of the national teams (Barbados ) will
be wearing our brand.
Barbados is the first national football
team to be attired in the Stanno brand
and Boonacker said he is quite pleased
that the national association has chosen his company and expects lot of
goals and favourable results in their
new uniforms.
Most importantly this partnership with
the BFA coincides with Stanno’s 30th
birthday and according to the CEO it
has been an eventful three decades
for the company, which is predominantly known in Europe as well as in
the United States on the collegiate
circuit where they outfit soccer and
volleyball teams.
2
In front of an estimated 3000 spectators the two countries were locked
in a battle for boasting rights. Their
last encounter saw Guyana coming
out victorious at the same venue
2-0.
The young new look Barbados team,
with an average age of 20 were not
prepared to let Guyana walk away
with a win. As early as the 12th
minute Guyana’s Sheldon Holder
found the goal to give his country
the lead. The Barbadian lads were
struggling to cope with the attack
of Guyana’s professional players
in the early part of the first half.
In the 33rd minute Emery Welshman added to their anguish with a
low driven shot pass the Barbadian
goalkeeper for a two goal lead.
Three minutes later the Barbadians’ hopes were revived when Jomo
Harris’ 20 yard stunner shot beat

the outstretched Guyana goalkeeper
to his left for a 1-2 scoreline. This goal
was Harris’ first for his country and it
was a very memorable one.
Shortly afterwads Barbados’ captain Mario Harte was able to receive
a well-placed pass, allowing him to
evade the defender to make a clinical
left foot finish in the 37th minute. The
2-2 score at the end of
the first half remained
for the duration of the
match as neither side
score again.

At the post-game press
conference coaches Jamal Shabazz of Guyana
and Marcos Falopa of
Barbados praised the
young Barbadian team
on their performance.
Both coaches shared the
view that the Guyanese
team was more experienced and indicated
that for young men who
were not professional
players, they played a
beautiful game of football.
3
Harris who scored for Barbados was
most elated with achieving the draw
after being 2-0 down rather than scoring his first national team goal.
“This game was a tough game and it
was a physical one mainly because the
Guyanese players were stronger than
us and were able to easily win the
balls from us. However, after I scored
the team’s spirit lifted and we were
able to tie the game.” Harris further
added, “I learned a lot from this game
but most importantly we have to make
a lot of quick passes between each
other and stay closer to our opponents
when defending if we are to improve.”
The game was in preparation for the
preliminary stages in the CONCACAF
zone of the FIFA 2018 World Cup Qualifiers for Russia, on March 22nd and
26th this year. Barbados hosted the
United States Virgin Islands in the first
leg and made the return trip during
the same period.

of two matches in the FIFA 2018 World

After Barbados’ Captain Mario Harte
missed a 6th minute penalty USVI
Forward Jamie Browne made Barbados pay the price when he scored the
match winning goal in the 16th minute. Browne out ran the indecisive
Barbados full backs to lob the advancing castodian Dario Weir.
During the second half Barbados made
several mistakes in an attempt to
come from behind for a win. Midfielder Jomo Harris received a red card in
the 54th minute while Romario Harewood’s penalty kick was saved by USVI
Goalkeeper Erik Mozzo in the 69th
minute.
“We had many chances and their goalkeeper saved a lot of attempts on goal
but I congratulate USVI on their win as
they are playing well. My team started
good in the game but our fullbacks had
some problems and USVI capitalized.
Even though we opened their defense
we were still unable to score and their
goalkeeper was at his best and he is
good player.” Marcos Falopa - Barbados’ Technical Director.
When asked how he felt about the Falopa said, “This is a World Cup game,
not a friendly, teams lift their game
for these encounters, however, my
team felt very confident about winning today than they were against
Guyana and St. Vincent but I am certainly not pleased with my team’s performance.”
very pleased with the result and indicated that all went as expected as he
was prepared for this match and he
knew his team was going to win.
They defeated USVI 4-0 to qualify for
the second round.
“I want to congratulate my players. We
won because we had unity and good
organization. Today’s match was very
difficult, we put up a big fight and I
thank my team for their performance.
Later this week we will be ready for
the next match in St. Thomas, which
will not be easy for Barbados, they
are better than us we were the underdogs but football plays in 90 minutes.
I researched my opposition and I knew
how to beat them.”
Barbados travelled to the island of St.
Thomas for the return leg in the first
round of their FIFA 2018 World Cup
Qualifier, Thursday 26th March 2015 at
3:30pm.

team soundly defeated St. Vincent and
the Grenadines 3 - 1 in
the first of two international friendlies at the
National Stadium on
March 6th, 2015.
Taking full advantage of
their home status Barbados was all over St. Vincent and the Grenadines
from the kick off. As early as the seventh minute
Barbados was awarded
a penalty when Jabarry
Chandler was fouled in
the box by the SVG full
back Reginald Richardson
who then received a red
card. However, Chandler’s
attempt from the penalty
spot was saved by St. Vincent’s Goalkeeper Winslow
McDowall.
Just minutes later the Barbados team took the lead
when they netted two goals
and got in the driver’s seat.
After Barbados won a corner Kemar Headley capitalized on the opponents poor
marking to head home his
first senior team goal in the
16th minute. While Jamal
Chandler broke away from
the Vincentian defense for
a one on one with the Goalkeeper and scored a 21st
minute goal from about 18
yards away.
The first half ended with
Barbados leading 2-0. Making matters worst was that
SVG was playing with nine
men after Miron Samuel
was sent off by Referee
Gillian Martindale in the
40th minute after receiving a second caution.
with the team’s performance. As I said before
the team is young and
needs time to adapt to
the international game.
St. Vincent is a strong
team and they play good
football even though they
too have a young team.”
Falopa commented that
for the World Cup Qualifier the Barbados team
would be better.
Barbados players celebrate a goal against St.
Vincent and the Grenadines.
When the second half resumed, the “Bajan Tridents” kept the pressure
on and the Vincentians
were never able to create
many plays within the midfield.
B
arbados and St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) drew the
final game 2-2 in their two
match friendly series on
March 9, 2015 at the National Stadium.
Technical Director Marcos
Falopa made a change to
his front line by putting
substitute Jomo Harewood in the game. A decision that would pay off.
Harewood would always
remember his debut goal.
Whilst making a quick run
he collected a through ball
and with just the “Vincy”
Custodian to beat he drove
the ball with his left foot
from just inside the box to
score his country’s third
goal in the 64th minute.
St. Vincent and the Grenadines attained a 1-0 lead
through the skillful Juma
Gilkes, as early as the third
minute. However, goals by
Hadan Hooligan (12’) and
Romario Harewood (17’)
gave the Tridents a 2-1 lead
until Tevin Slater equalized
in the 86 min.
In the 86th minute Chavel Cunningham scored a
bomber of a free kick from
30 yards leaving Barbados’
Goalkeeper Sean Fields
stunned and if that was not
spectacular enough you
should have seen his back
flip for a celebration.
Barbados’ Technical Director, Marcos Falopa was satisfied with his team’s performance, noting that SVG
is a strong team although
they are rebuilding.
“A win would have been
better but I am satisfied
5
“The games we have
played so far are to prepare us for the World Cup
Qualifier against USVI
and we should be better
by that time as we will
have a mixture with mainly
under 23 and experienced
players.”
SVG Head Coach Cornelius
Huggins, was pleased with
team’s performance given
the fact that they were
several debutants in the
match.
“I am pleased with our performance tonight, certainly
better than Friday although
I believe we should have
won this match. We are in a
rebuilding process and with
nine debutants in tonight’s
game they are some areas
we have to work on especially our fitness if there is
to be improvement.”
Both teams are to continue
their preparations for the
FIFA World Cup Qualifiers
this year.

The principal and her staff were also overjoyed
that the national football team chose to visit the

it was the first for both groups.
SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY
Barbados FA and the University of the
West Indies Signs MOU
The Barbados Football Association and the University of the West Indies officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding on Tuesday,
January 20th 2015 at the University's Solution Centre, First Caribbean
Suite, Cave Hill, St. Michael.
In addition, Pro Vice Chancellor Sir
Hilary Beckles was more than elated
to sign the MOU with the Barbados
Football Association for a number of
reasons. “The BFA is deserving of the
resources from the universities. I hope
that the University can lift the standard of football in Barbados because
for a long time we are unable to sustain what we achieve in sports, though
we have produced some of the best
sports men and women per capita out
of all of the regions in the world”, the
Pro Vice Chancellor remarked.
Moreover, the use of the university facilities for tournaments, training, education, policy, community and citizenship programs are all prospects which
excited Pro Vice Chancellor Sir Hilary
Beckles.
“The University of the West Indies
sees it as part of its long term strategic plan to be the sporting university
of the Caribbean. We are building an
institution of learning to give respect
for the science and art of sports” the
Pro Vice Chancellor proudly remarked.

In what is to be a long term mutual partnership for developing football in Barbados Head of Sports, Mrs. Reifer
said, “This agreement speaks to hosting of workshops and

V
ice President of the BFA Captain Al
Walcott had high praises for women’s
football in Barbados and gave insight
on the future plans for the women’s game.
“After watching some of the games in
the 2014 I was impressed with the quality
of play and competitiveness in all of the
teams as points were very close for first
place. Moreover, I do hope it remains a
consistent feature of the women’s league.
With that being said, I am happy to inform
you of the steps taken by the BFA to develop women’s football such as hosting international friendlies against Grenada and
Dominica, the BFA Women’s D coaching
course held in January this year, a grassroots program just for women to unfold
in April and a secondary schools Women’s
Football League.”
Captain Walcott also unveiled another
major development in women’s game. He
added that the 2015 women’s football season will be played along with the men’s
leagues and no longer will there be two
separate seasons of football in Barbados ,
which was well received by all.
This year is the year of women in football
and the BFA is proud to have specially presented the following awards for the 2014

expected to be an exciting 2015 season.

Thomas Jordan said it was granted out of
result, not necessarily out of performance as he believes
the team has a long
way to go. However, he expected
the ladies to defeat
their opponents on
the night and since
that
expectation
was met, the rating was merited.
The 3-1 score line
in favour of Barbados
does
not
necessarily depict the true nature of the
game as Dominica were in control of the
first 15 minutes of the encounter and were
mostly competitive in the second half.
Jordan highlighted his country’s slow
start and indicated this has been a problem for most Barbadian teams in the past
but he was quick to compliment his ladies for settling after that and adjusting
to the quick, slick conditions and ability to passing the balls to feet as required.
Captain of the Barbados squad, Gabriella Lopez, praised her team mates for
an improved performance, especially in
such a short period (two weeks) and trusts
that these kinds of results will be something to look forward to from her squad.
“I think it’s a step up from last game. With a
team as skillful as this one, it is only a matter of
stringing together 90 minutes, with moments
of excellence and that’s what we did today
and scored three goals”, a proud Lopez stated.
Head Coach Jordan commented that the
result should not camouflage the obvious areas which need to be worked on
especially in the technical and physical aspects of the girls’ game as he was
not entirely pleased with the 3-1 result.
“I don’t think the score line is an indicator
that the performance has improved because
I’m not fully satisfied with what I saw. Even
though we did improve from last game (Grenada), I believe we should be a lot better
than what I saw tonight” Jordan remarked.
Dominica’s coach Kenneth Espirit acknowledge defeat but was not disappointed.
He indicated that he was pleased with
the effort and commitment displayed by
his young squad who were quite competitive on their first artificial turf encounter.
“No loss is really nice, but the coaches have
learnt a lot from tonight’s game. We are going
10
10
to take this and move forward in improving
our game, so the next time we come to Barbados, it will be different game, stated Espirit.
Espirit said the timing of the game and quality of opponents was needed as they are
preparing for the Windward Island games in
March and their preparation has been relatively recent with just five weeks completed.
“This game gave us the opportunity to assess our work thus far, to see where we
are, what areas we need to work on and
the areas that need improving”, he said.
Dominica may have suffered a greater defeat,
if not for the outstanding and heroic goalkeeping of 19 year old Kadisha Joseph. Joseph
displayed bravery, agility and good anticipation as she denied Barbados front trio of Felicia Jarvis, Tiffany White and Kimberley Ellis.
Joseph put her performance down to
a civil duty to her country and commended her girls’ performance but approved Barbados’ superiority on the pitch.
“Both teams played well but Barbados played
better and they won. Some improvements are
needed for next time around in terms of fitness,
passing and more determination, Joseph said.
Her team mates may have adhered to her
words as they put in a more spirited display on Sunday evening at Dover as the
teams played to a 1-1 draw, with Barbados striking first in the 5th minute through
Makala Alleyne and Dominica replying
three minutes later courtesy a Kaysandra
Alexander goal, her second in two days.
“There were good patches in our game tonight; the goalkeeping was exceptional, our
center backs were good and our forwards did
well. In the second half my team was more
composed, they played with more determination and we were very competitive”, he said
After their 1-1 draw with Grenada, Barbados’
latest result will propel the ladies to succeed their current 127th placed FIFA ranking.
Looking ahead, Jordan said, “hopefully
the team will remain training, as some
other national teams have requested
games and I’m just hoping the football association can facilitate them, so that the
girls may improve, as they really need
the games to raise their standards”.

female officials on FIFA list.

S
aturday, January 10th 2015 at
the Usain Bolt Sports Complex,
Paradise Park, St. Michael. The
BFA officially presented FIFA badges
to two of its top female referees.
It celebrated two outstanding achievements this day as the women’s team
defeated Dominica 3-1, and it recognized its latest FIFA accredited women’s international official, Shannon
Gibson, with the presentation of her
FIFA Assistant Referee’s badge.
Gibson made her FIFA international debut as an official in the capacity of assistant referee along with fellow FIFA
officials Clifton Garnes, Trevor Taylor
and experienced FIFA Referee Gillian
Martindale.
The former Lester Vaughn and Mavericks forward has put away the boots
and picked up the flag and to great
aplomb according to some of her colleagues and observers.
“Shannon is very keen, confident and
serious about refereeing”, stated Martindale, who said it is a privilege to
have Shannon amongst her team of
FIFA international referees.
Gibson first got involved in football at
the age of 17 as a player under the
guidance of club and school coach
Adrian Mapp. She was an exceptional
player, known for her pace, stamina
and ability to score from anywhere on
the pitch, but when the choice had to
be made, she did not walk away too
pleased.
The 2013 Barbados Football Association (BFA) Women’s League top goal
scorer said “I had to give up playing
which I did not want to but when I
went to the Cayman Islands for the
CONCACAF Under 15 tournament, I realize there’s much more in refereeing
than actually playing”.
It was after her outstanding performances at the CONCACAF Under 15
Championships last August that she
was recommended by the relevant
11
authorities to pursue her FIFA status,
which she gleefully accepted the challenge.
Martindale, a FIFA accredited referee
since 2009 is one of the most qualified
female referees in the CONCACAF region and she also received her annual
badge on Saturday. She said it is indeed
an honour to have another Barbadian
female to reach FIFA status. She also
believes that Gibson’s appointment is
good not only Barbadian football but
regional football as well.
“It is very good for Barbados’ football
on the international market because
we really need two teams (8 referees)
to be highly considered for international appointments”.
“There’s a shortage of referees (females) in the Caribbean, so we usually
have to source referees from outside
the Caribbean to service our tournaments. So Shannon’s addition is not
only good for Barbados football but
CFU as well”, said Martindale.

n Sunday February 8th 2015
matchday one of Digicel Premier League kicked off to an
amazing start with an entertaining
triple header event in front of 1500
spectators, at the National Stadium.
B
arbados national player Ranaldo Bailey was selected to take
part in the MLS Caribbean Football Union Combine camp, which ran
from January 2nd until Jan 5th 2015
in Bayamon, Puerto Rico.
Bailey an 18 year old Centre-Back who
is an outstanding up and coming footballer has represented the Barbados
at the CONCACAF U17 Championship
in Panama 2013, and just a year later
was a member of the Barbados team
that participated in the Caribbean
Men’s U20 in June, 2014.
The Caribbean Combine camp provided the opportunity for evaluation by
MLS Staff for possible selection to the
MLS Combine in Ft. Lauderdale January 9-14, 2015.
During the 2015 Caribbean Combine
camp, Bailey played two games over
a four-day period. The Barbados Football Association congratulates Ranaldo
on his achievements so far and wishes
him all the best in his endeavours.
Speaking of entertainment, there was
no game more pleasing for the fans
than Rendezvous FC vs Gall Hill as
the ‘new boys’ Rendezvous FC took the
Gall Hill defense a part in a 5-0 drumming. This left Gall Hill with much to
ponder on how the remainder of their
season will go.
With some new players in the Rendezvous line up it took them a few minutes to find their rhythm as Gall Hill
seemed to be holding their own and
had a few chances to draw first blood.
But the professionalism and quality
of the Rendezvous players only took
them 22 minutes to shine as Romano
Snagg blasted a shot into the back of
the Gall Hill net.
Later on Shandel Samuel and Emanuel
George scored in the 41st and 45th+
minutes respectively to go into the
second half with a 3-0 lead.
Locally, Bailey was regular starter
for Gall Hill FC in the Digicel Premier
League and was later selected to represent the Barbados Senior Men’s national team in the Round 1 of Caribbean Cup 2014 Qualifiers in Martinique.
At this stage the Gall Hill players
were in disarray and became divided
amongst themselves as all plans for a
comeback disappeared from thought.
Making matters worse, Rendezvous
was awarded a penalty kick after a

UWI Blackbirds VS BDFSP
The first match of the night featured
another set of ‘new boys’ to the Premier League, UWI Blackbirds, who
almost caused a major upset. As the
teams exited the tunnel to take to the
field of play, the last year’s champions BDFSP looked supremely confident whilst the University ‘guys’ were
in a pious mood. Early in the game
the BDFSP players were all over the
UWI Blackbirds defense and at times
missed many chances from as little as
five yards away from goal.
G
After a goalless first half the Blackbirds’ Rico Holder slotted home a rare
chance in the 64th minute to give his
team the lead. It is only then that
the BDFSP players appeared to place
more urgency in their game to avoid
a first game defeat against first timers in top flight football. Fortunately,
the BDFSP was awarded a penalty kick
after the Blackbirds defender handled
the ball from a corner. Raheem Sergeant then stepped up to score what
seemed like the BDFSP’s only opportunity in the 80th minute. With just 10
minutes to go the match then ended in
a tame 1-1 draw.
Notre Dame VS Brittons Hill FC
“Youth vs Experience”. A fitting term
for this local derby as a young Notre
Dame team took on their experienced
neighbors Brittons Hill. Spectators
would have been expecting one-sided
game in favor of Brittons Hill but the
young Notre Dame players were
making a daring attacks on goal
and were resolute in defense.

It is safe to say that this game was
played between two evenly matched
teams. May be it could of been the fact
that this game was one of bragging
rights and indeed it was. As there were
moments of brilliance when Dwayne
Stanford and Curtis Odle ‘schooled’
the young Notre Dame lads with their
unbelievable skills to the delight of
the crowd. But when all was said and
done it was a stunning 75th minute
free kick by Brittons Hill’s Dwayne
Standford which ended the match 1-0.

BFA Opens FIFA Grassroots Coaching Course
he Barbados Football Association opened the FIFA Grassroots Course on January 15th
2015 at the Barbados Olympic Association, Sir Garfield Sobers Sports
Complex, Wildey, St. Michael.
Thirty of Barbados’ top football coaches started out on the road towards
changing lives and influencing future
stars in the beautiful game of football.
FIFA instructor Lenny Lake imparted a
message of “Give back” to the coaches and told them “You have a chance
to change lives. Your habits and actions will be copied by your kids, thus,
the future of Barbados’ football is in
your hands,” said Lake. The instructor from St. kitts previously visited
Barbados as a member of the Leeward
Island’s cricket team when he would
have been playing with greats such as
Sir Vivian Richards, Sir Curtly Ambrose
and Sir Richie Richardson.
Earlier Barbados Football Association’s
General Secretary, Ms. Joyce Stewart,
told the coaches of the importance of
the Grassroots program.
“This isn’t about the number of goals
scored, it isn’t about the winning,
but rather it’s all about fun. You will
be helping to shape the minds and in
some cases the lives of these youngsters. Saturday mornings may very
well be the only thing they have to
look forward to in their world, so it is
important you don’t lose focus of why
you are here.”
Lake pointed out that the earlier staging of the Grassroots programs internationally had proven disastrous because of the dictatorship demands of
the coaches on the youngsters.
“The program has been adjusted to
accommodate the changes in the
world and the emphasis is on letting
the children play and letting the children have fun,” advised Lake.

The BFA Technical Director, Mr. Marcos Falopa, echoed similar statements
to Mr. Lake. “The main objective
of Grassroots football is to develop
young children boys and girls in the
fundamentals of playing football and
most importantly to have fun. In addition, the Grassroots coaching course is
meant to teach coaches how to coach
very young children ages 6 - 12 years
old.”
The FIFA Grassroots Coaching Course
closed on high at the Blenheim playing
field and the National Sports Council
Headquarters Sunday, January 18th
2015.
