A Message from Mr. Hoffland,
Principal
Dear Charger Family,
Mr. Bill Hazell – Academics
Assistant Principal
During the week of February 22 we completed
our AdvancED accreditation visit. AdvancED
(http://www.advanc-ed.org/) is an organization
whose primary purpose is to provide a
systematic process of “quality assurance designed primarily to
distinguish schools adhering to a set of educational standards. The
accreditation process is also known in terms of its ability to effectively
drive student performance and continuous improvement in education.”
In short, accreditation through AdvancED helps to ensure that schools
and districts are using current research and effective practices in order
to best serve their communities.

Using Results for Continuous Improvement
Our School Improvement Steering Committee, comprised of staff,
Students, and community members, spent much of the last four years
reviewing how we at McClintock align our practices with these
AdvancED standards. The document that reflects how we do this is
called our Continuous Improvement Plan (CIP). The CIP is an
extensive document which lists each standard and the indicators that
break each standard down into subcomponents, and then each of
these is represented by a number of strategies and action steps that
reflect how the school accomplishes the ideals expressed in the
standards and indicators. Lastly, artifacts are collected to show how
these strategies and action steps have been successfully implemented
at the school. The entire process should be ongoing and should result
in a school community that is continually reflecting on practices in order
to serve the entire community to the best of our ability. These practices
and the evidence that supports them are the items that are evaluated
by the visiting AdvancED team.

We will receive the final report within 30 days of the visit. It will contain commendations and areas
to target for improvement. We look forward to the report to assist us in identifying those areas that
will help to make us a better school for all students, staff, and community members. Thanks to all

Lost, Found — or Forgotten?
Thank you, Charger community!
We’re grateful and appreciative for the
2015 tax credit donations we received
from the community. The total for
McClintock was $124,809, an increase of
$35,356 from 2014! These funds support
our students in a great variety of ways,
from the classroom to the athletic fields,
and in all arenas in which our students
perform.
A variety of things found on campus have
been turned in to Lost & Found, but no
one’s come in to claim most of them. If
you’ve lost something,
be sure to check in at
the Bookstore before
school’s out and see if
it’s there.

Understanding Your Scores
In addition to your scores, your SAT score
reports also include percentiles and score
ranges. Admissions staff use the percentiles and
ranges to evaluate the scores because no single
score can tell everything about how you performed on the test. Keep in mind that colleges
use more than your SAT scores when making
admissions decisions. Your high school record is
most important, and colleges may also consider
essays, recommendations, interviews, and your
involvement in extracurricular activities.
SAT Reasoning Test
SAT scores are reported on a scale from 200800, with additional subscores reported for the
essay (ranging from 2-12) and for multiplechoice writing questions (on a 20-80 scale). Your
scores tell college admissions staff how you did
compared with other students who took the test.
For example, if you scored close to the mean or
average—about 500 on SAT critical reading and
500 on SAT mathematics—admissions staff
would know that you scored as well as about
half of the students who took the test nationally.
SAT Subject Tests
All currently administered Subject Test scores
are reported on a scale from 200-800, with
Subject Test subscores being reported on a
scale from 20 to 80. Reading and listening subscores are reported for all Language Tests with
Listening, and a usage subscore is also reported
for the Chinese, Japanese, and Korean tests.
The English Language Proficiency Test™
(ELPT™), which was last administered in
January 2005, is reported on a scale from 901 to
999 with subscores that are reported on a scale
from 1 to 50. Your scores tell college admissions
staff how you did compared
with other students who took
the test.

The number of students who are swept on an hourly
basis continued to decrease through the first
semester and the first half of this semester. The
average number of students swept from second period through seventh has
been about 2 students each period. That equates to roughly 1800 students in
class, on time, every period — except for first period. For first period, the
average is about 12 students swept each day.
It is very important that students not miss class time, and it will take a team
effort to achieve this. Students should do everything possible to be in their classes on time.
Parents can encourage their students to do this, and should remember to arrive prior to 7:30
when dropping them off in the morning. Teachers, administrators, maintenance workers, and
security guards will continue to help hurry students toward classes throughout the day.
Working together, it should be possible can get the number of students going to Sweep down to
zero.

How did McClintock High School get its name?
1)

It sounded cool. NO!
It was named after a hair dresser from New York. NO!
The first drummer for the Beatles was named McClintock. NO!
After the street. NO! (Well, kind of...)
McClintock High School is named after James H. McClintock (1864-1934). He was born
in Sacramento, California. Captain McClintock commanded Troop B for Teddy Roosevelt’s Rough Riders, long
before Roosevelt became president of the United States. The famed Rough Riders were a major force during
the Spanish-American War as a mounted fighting unit. As the legend goes, the Rough Riders became known
as the "Chargers" for the way they went into battle. We can all imagine Teddy Roosevelt saying "Let’s go,
Chargers!" A Rough Rider was not allowed to leave his duty, even to tend to the wounded, and the motto
"Once a Charger, Always a Charger" came into being. Please note that McClintock’s mascot is not a lightening
bolt as they have in San Diego!
After McClintock's time with the Rough Riders, he settled in the valley and was elected a colonel in what
would become the National Guard. McClintock was a major player in the development of our area and was
appointed postmaster of Phoenix. He continued a career in writing and wrote for his brother’s newspaper,
The Salt River Herald. He wrote for newspapers, magazines, and literary works. McClintock was a member of
the expedition to survey the site of the future Roosevelt Dam. McClintock was also a member of the first
graduating class of the Territorial Normal School, now Arizona State University. Colonel McClintock later
served as Arizona's official state historian, thus being honored not only in the naming of a high school, but
also in the selection of the name of the yearbook, the Historian.
National Merit Scholarships
This year seven seniors from McClintock High School have made it to the
National Merit Scholarship semi-finals. The students are competing for the
prestigious 61st annual National Merit Scholarship awards. These coveted
awards are given to students who typically represent the top 0.5 percent of
seniors nationwide.
Those selected to be semi-finalists must meet rigorous requirements, including having an
outstanding academic record throughout high school, demonstrated leadership abilities,
participation in school and community activities, and the recommendation of their school
principal. They also have to write an essay and earn SAT scores that confirm their earlier
performance on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.
Those who ultimately win the scholarships represent less than 1 percent of the initial pool of
some 16,000 students. Congratulations, Chargers!

McClintock High School
It is the belief of the faculty, staff, and administration that school pride, morale,
and image are influenced by the general appearance of our students. McClintock
High School expects student dress and grooming to reflect high standards of
personal conduct, so that each student’s attire promotes a positive, safe, and
healthy atmosphere within our school. A committee of parents, students, and staff
have created a set of dress code guidelines. We want to provide freedom for
students to express themselves within the parameters listed below:
Attire or accessories which advertise, display, and/or promote any drug, alcohol,
tobacco, sexual activity, or violence, or feature language which is disrespectful,
lewd, vulgar, profane or obscene, and/or express bigotry towards any group or
person, are not allowed.
Any attire or grooming deemed to be gang-related is prohibited when such attire or
grooming creates an atmosphere of threat, intimidation or undue pressure, disrupts
the educational environment/process, or interferes with curriculum goals/educational
objectives.
Dress, jewelry, skin markings temporary or permanent, and other accessories
that present a risk to the health, safety, and general welfare of students, or
which express obscenities, expose the chest (no cleavage), abdomen, upper
thighs or buttocks are prohibited.
Body piercing that is a safety hazard and/or hinders performance in the classroom
is not allowed.
Shoes will be worn. Slippers/house shoes are not appropriate footwear at school.
Sunglasses are prohibited in the classroom.
Hats and other accessories may be allowed/disallowed at faculty/staff
discretion.
Pajama tops and/or bottoms are not appropriate school attire.
Undergarments (such as bra straps, boxers, etc.) should not be
visible.
Exceptions may be made for uniforms, formal attire, and/or
costumes.

Cell Phones
and
Other Personal Electronic Devices
Cell phones and other personal electronic devices have become an
interruption to classroom instruction.
These items may not be used during class time.
*** They must be turned off and stored out of sight. ***
If a student takes out and/or uses a phone and/or other electronic
device for any reason during class time, it can be confiscated by the
teacher.
On the first violation, the device will be confiscated and turned in
to Administration. The student may reclaim it after school that same
day.
On the second violation, the student’s parent/guardian must
personally pick up the device from Administration.
A third violation will result in two days of off-campus suspension.
Come join us for the 5th Annual Geeks Night Out!

American Legion Boys State and American Legion Auxiliary Girls
State are exciting and fun premier programs. Participants learn how
government works while developing leadership skills and an appreciation of
citizens’ rights. Students participating will run for office, learn public
speaking, create and enforce laws, and actively take part in all phases of
creating and running a working government.
Boys and Girls State will take place from June 5-11, 2016. Boys State will be held at Northern
Arizona University. Girls State will be held at the University of Arizona. The American Legion and
Tempe Union Foundation work together to scholarship the student's registration expenses. Students
involved will meet other students from across Arizona, network with amazing mentors and leaders,
and develop the confidence and leadership skills that will shape their future
skill sets.
Student registration applications will be available in late January.
See Ms. Coronado in the Guidance Office, or contact her at

This year the National Football League (NFL) celebrates the playing of
the 50th Super Bowl. Included is a celebration of the players and the
coaches of the past 49 Super Bowls, their high schools and
communities, that have had a positive impact on the game. A
commemorative golden football has been sent to the high school of
every player who has participated in one of the 49 Super Bowl games.
McClintock High School has had three such players: Tank Johnson
(Class of 2000), Jason Kyle (Class of 1990) and John Tait (Class of
1993). The three golden footballs which commemorate their
participation in the Super Bowl are on display in the trophy cases in the
MHS gymnasium. We are proud of the connection that MHS has to this
event, and we are proud of the tradition of excellence that supports the
success of all McClintock students, past, present, and future.

The 320 students who had perfect
attendance for either first and/or
second quarter during the first
semester were recognized in early
February. These individuals were
rewarded with certificates and free
passes to events.
It is important for all students to
realize the importance of being at
school every day, ready to learn,
and that they understand this is a
reachable goal.

MHS Presidential Scholar
The White House Commission on Presidential Scholars and the
U.S. Department of Education announced the candidates for this
year’s United States Presidential Scholars Program.
Congratulations to Amrita Rhoads!
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964,
by Executive Order of the President, to recognize and honor some
of the nation's most distinguished graduating high school seniors. It
was expanded in 1979 and then again in 2015: First to recognize
exceptional students in first the visual, creative, and performing
arts, and then student accomplishments in career and technical education fields. No more than
161 students are named Presidential Scholars per year, so this is a considerable achievement!
For more information, please visit the U.S. Department of Education.

McClintock Wrestling
Only half of McClintock’s wrestling team was able to attend the Payson Tournament on January 22 and 23,
but they still placed 5th out of the 20 teams present. This was their best showing ever. They produced
three champions — the most of any school attending — and four finalists.
Gator and Marco Groves were defending their Payson titles. Gator won the 126-pound championship by
beating the #1 ranked Division III wrestler. Marco followed up by claiming the top prize at 132. Noah Bello,
a finalist last year, broke through this year to secure the 160-pound title. Crystian Rodriguez took 2nd at
120 for his first tournament placing, while Alex Kunitada also placed for the first time, taking 5th at 106.
The Groves' twins defended their state wrestling titles in February at the Prescott meet. Gator Groves
again won the 126-pound championship, and Marco Groves again won at 132-pounds. Senior Noah Bello
placed 4th at 160-pounds.
Gator finished the season with a 59-2 record, with 27 pins. Marco had an undefeated state best 62-0 mark
with a school record of 35 pins. Noah Bello finished the season with a 56-8 record, and broke McClintock's
record with 154 career wins!
All three wrestlers together shattered McClintock's record for wins in a season, set by Gator last year at 52.
Despite only these three scoring, McClintock nevertheless placed 11th out of 45 teams with 65 total points.
Congratulations to Marco for being named the Arizona Republic Athlete of the Week and Month in the
Arizona Republic.
Congratulations to both Marco and Gator for their selection to the Tribune first team for wrestling!
