S
aying goodbye is never easy especially when it means saying goodbye to
something you love. After more than three decades of service in libraries,
the time has come for me to retire from a career that has been immensely
rewarding and truly a labour of love. Looking back, I have seen many changes
in the service perhaps most significantly in the area of technology. But there have
been many other important changes as well. Long gone are the days when silence
and conforming to rules and regulations defined the institution. The library is now a
vibrant place where people gather and connect sharing ideas and experience. Staff
have stepped out from behind the desk to become more integrated in the community.
Our spaces are warm and inviting and the primary focus is to be responsive to the
individual needs of our patrons and to be invested in their wellbeing.
These days, people often ask what the library will look like in the future. I believe it
will be what people want and need it to be. But no matter what the future brings, the
library will continue to be a welcoming place for all people, a place of learning where
ideas and imagination take flight, a place that strengthens community and as always,
a place where the love of reading is celebrated and books are treasured. Greater
Sudbury Public Library is moving in a new and exciting direction and I am immensely
proud to have been part of this institution that has served the community so well for
over a century and will continue to do so in the future.

Tales on the Trails
Would you like a new way to read a book with your kids? Take a
drive to the Lake Laurentian Conservation Area and visit our Story
Time Trail. We launched Tales on the Trails this past summer with
our first story – Samuel’s Most Important Message by Frank
Glew. Hike the trail and read the story as you go to learn about
a very special turtle named Samuel. The trail starts just to the left
of the Nature Chalet at the Lake Laurentian Conservation Area
(2309 South Bay Road). We welcome you to take pictures while
walking the Story Time Trail and send them our way via Facebook
or Twitter (#GSPLibrary) to share your hike with us.

NEW GSPL CATALOGUE
COMING SOON!
Users of our online catalogue will soon notice some changes
on our website. Our new catalogue (Bibliocommons) will have
a better search function, provide the option for users to keep
track of their reading and allow users to discover titles in new
ways. Add reviews, create lists, find titles to read later and
have better access to the new titles being added to the
library’s collection! Patron accounts will also show check-out
of electronic titles from OverDrive with their regular material
and users will not leave the library’s website when checking
out eBooks. All of the best features of the current system
will remain and some additional functionality will be added.
Be on the lookout for the new look in November!
CANADIAN LIBRARY MONTH /
ONTARIO PUBLIC LIBRARY WEEK
Throughout Canada, the month of October is dedicated as
Canadian Library Month to raise awareness of the valuable role
that libraries play in the everyday lives of Canadians. And did
you know that October 19 to 25 is Ontario Public Library Week?
The theme for this year is “Libraries Inspire” and so GSPL will be
heading out into the community during this week to inspire and
connect with people in the community. We are looking for work
sites, schools and other community spaces who would like us to
come and visit and talk up the libraries - give us a call and we’ll
make a date with your site. Each of our 13 locations will also be
hosting Patron Appreciation Days during Public Library Week
so be sure to visit your local library this week so we can thank
you for your patronage!

Check it Out! Fall 2014
Stack Brewing recently launched right
here in Sudbury. The idea came about by
Shawn Mailloux and Michael Guillemettefans of good beer, born and raised right
here in the Nickel City.
After years of drinking beers that were not quite right for them
and their friends, they decided to brew a beer that would
appeal to casual and seasoned beer drinkers alike. They’re
a small operation with big hearts, smiles and ideas. Are you
interested in learning more about craft beers and the process
used to make them? Stack Brewing will be visiting the South
End Library on Thursday, November 6 at 6:30 PM to talk about
their process of making their homemade beers.

HEALTHY
EATING
@GSPL
by Jessica Watts
Recently, GSPL was invited to attend a
meeting in Sudbury to talk about food
literacy in our community. What exactly
is food literacy? It’s all about promoting
healthy eating habits to the community,
improving cooking skills and helping
people find out more about local foods.
How does GSPL contribute? In addition
to our resources, we have been hosting
cooking workshops in partnership with
the Sudbury & District Health Unit, and
we hear only good things about this
program from the people who have
attended. We have been responding to
the growing interest by planning more
sessions. People are realizing more
and more the importance of healthy,
whole foods in their diet and the benefit
of eating more local, or at least unprocessed, foods.
Legumes, hemp seeds, flaxseed and
quinoa are becoming staple items in
kitchens across the country. Recipes
made with kale, avocados, almond milk
and coconut butter are being searched
out in higher numbers. The good news is
that for people who want to learn more
and expand their culinary repertoire there
are plenty of resources. Whether they
are online or found locally, information
is available and ideas are abundant. At
GSPL we have a continual flow of new
books to meet this demand.

Poet Laureate POTTERY @ GSPL
Tom Leduc,
Greater Sudbury Poet Laureate
2014-2016
MOVING WITH POETRY
Thank you to everyone who submitted poetry to our Moving
with Poetry project. We were looking for writing submissions for
this unique program that will feature pieces of writing on Transit
Buses. We ended up receiving approximately 50 submissions
and are now going through all the pieces of writing to select
12 or 15 that will be used for the initial signs that will be
posted in the buses. Stay tuned – we will announce the
launch of this soon!
AN EVENING OF ZOMBIE POETRY
Are you tired of dragging yourself around the city, looking
for fun things to do and coming up with nothing but a dead
end? Well, Sudbury’s Poet Laureate Tom Leduc, together with
the Greater Sudbury Public Library, is hosting a lively evening
of Zombie poetry. Join us on Tuesday, October 28, at Little
Montreal (182 Elgin Street) from 8 PM to 10 PM where poetry
will come back from the dead to liven up your life. All Zombies
must be 19 years of age or older. Entry fee is a non-perishable
food item for the Sudbury food bank. Anyone wishing to
participate can send an e-mail to tom.leduc@greatersudbury.ca.
You can read your own Zombie Poem, bring a dead poets’ work
back to life by Zombifying it or just find a Zombie poem you like
to read. Prizes may be given out for best costumes, as well as
best poems. So start using your brains and join us as we tear
into this town and chew on some fun Zombie poetry.
YOUNG WRITERS GUILD
This new group invites young people (ages 12 to 18) to join us
at the Main Library for monthly meetings to share a common
interest in writing of any kind. Join Tom and help us create
a comfortable and inspiring community for young people
interested in writing. Young writers will have the opportunity
to express themselves, share their work, and hone their skills
at the same time. This will help prepare them for the world
of publishing and events like Open Mic night at the Library,
poetry and writing contests, and the Sudbury’s Word Stock
Festival. This will also give them the experience they require to
move on to the Sudbury Writers’ Guild, and someday become
some of Canada’s next great authors. Any youth interested
in participating is welcome to join us at the first meetings:
October 26 and November 30 at 1 PM.
Greater Sudbury Public Library
Join us at the Pottery Sale at the New Sudbury
Library on December 5 (9 AM to 5 PM) and
December 6 (10 AM to 3 PM). This exhibit will
feature all local and handmade pottery pieces
made by members of the Sudbury Potter’s Guild.
All items will be for sale and a portion of the
proceeds will be given to the library to support
library programming.
