The Government Center presents its most public expression toward Collins Avenue and is represented by the Commission Chamber that is surrounded by a civic plaza combining landscape, water and contrasting building materials. This is where the serious business of running the City is conducted. Meetings are generally held the third Thursday of each month. But what is housed inside this vision? Through inter-governmental partnerships, the first floor is primarily dedicated to services not under the City’s administration. Through the Federal Government, a satellite branch of the United States Post Office is open Monday– Friday. In cooperation with Miami-Dade County, the Sunny Isles Beach branch library is open Monday–Saturday and offers many classes and programs utilizing the City’s meeting room on the first floor. With support from the Sunny Isles Beach Tourism and Marketing Council, the Visitor Center completes the first floor, offering a wealth of information for tourists or residents looking to find “something to do” in South Florida. The Center also issues SIB Resident ID Cards for those with a picture ID and utility bill as proof of residence. Tickets to Cultural Events may be purchased there along with branded merchandise depicting SIB, florida’s riviera or Sunny Isles Beach, Miami. The second floor houses the SIB Police Department which is open 24/7. During regular business hours, elevators from the lobby take customers to the 2nd floor. After hours, the police department can be accessed via the 2nd level of the parking garage. Accident and crime reports may be requested at the records department. The third floor of the Government Center is the place for residents, visitors and contractors to visit and address issues of code enforcement and parking, apply for building permits or obtain business licenses. Fire plan reviews from MiamiDade County are also offered on Tuesdays at this location. The fourth floor houses the city commission, the offices of the city attorney, clerk and manager along with human resources and finance departments. Constituents may make appointments to meet with their elected officials over matters that concern them. Public record requests are handled here by the City clerk. Residents and visitors alike comment on the beautiful water, the sand on the beach, our beautiful parks, and the unique and beautiful architecture of this modern state-of-the-art city which has risen over the past sixteen years. All of this is achieved through hard work by many in and out of government. The City has and will continue to build beautiful parks and improve the infrastructure and streetscape, while the development community continues to construct state of the art buildings in our City. You may have noticed we are in another building boom, both from new construction replacing the remaining old motels, and from City initiated projects on public land. From the Government, we are proud to announce that by the time you read this article, Christopher J. Recently I had the opportunity to reflect on our years working together with a resident. She mentioned the good communication that we have between us. An avid reader of the Sunny Isles Beach Sun, SIB Islander and Living, she has also registered for our e-mail notifications, has our phone number on speed dial and visits our website often. So of course she was ecstatic to hear that the City has launched a social media program. She was one of the first to like us on Facebook and retweeted our first twitter post. Who has time for that? Someone who is connected to the community, cares about where she lives and wants to be sure she is getting correct information. She is committed to do her part to ensure her children are raised in a community that she is proud of. She is always grateful to be ‘in the know’. Knowledge is power. Whether it is as simple as getting your wristband early for the City Anniversary event, knowing of a park closure before you go, or learning of a meeting on something that you feel strongly about so you can be heard. Being ‘in the know’ will enrich your life in our community. So read on. Visit our website. Sign up for our email alerts. Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram. And when you can, share your knowledge with your neighbors and continue to make Sunny Isles Beach the best place to BE. Our guests–much like our residents–especially our children, enjoy swimming in the ocean. No one wants to swim in polluted water. And polluting our water is against the law. “Our responsibility for clean water begins at home…continues in the workplace… and the public spaces we enjoy.” Compliance The EPA conducts yearly reviews of the city’s efforts and results in preventing stormwater pollution. It is everyone’s responsibility to keep the waters clean. Water Rain water makes everything fresh and clean including our streets. And after a heavy rain, stormwater in our streets rushes into storm drains. These storm drains are important in providing a place for stormwater to go and help prevent our streets from flooding. But it isn’t only rain water that rushes into storm drains. Stormwater Pollution Say “pollution” and many people think of a factory pipe spewing pollutants. The federal Clean Water Act and similar state laws MAIN STORMWATER POLLUTANTS DO THE RIGHT THING 1 LITTER: Cans, paper and plastic bags and cigarette butts. Put these in garbage bags; recycle when possible. 2 CHEMICALS: Detergents, automotive fluids and fertilizers. Dispose of these according to container and local laws. Use earth-friendly products. 3 ORGANIC WASTE: Leaves, lawn and garden clippings and animal excrement. Bag it or compost it. limit this type of pollution. Today, we know that even neighborhoods without factories add pollutants to our water. How? In urban areas, like Sunny Isles Beach, stormwater carries with it everything from our modern, urban lives, including cigarette butts, litter, lawn chemicals, pet waste, grease and motor oil. Everything that goes into storm drains impacts our oceans, canals and lakes. 46 sibfl.net • For the most part, water entering storm drains, unlike water entering sanitary sewers, does not get treated before entering Biscayne Bay, the Intracoastal Waterway, the Atlantic Ocean, and our canals, rivers and lakes. Impact of Stormwater Pollution Polluted stormwater draining into our waterways is harmful to plants and animals. There are three main types of stormwater pollutants that impact marine life as follows: litter, chemicals and organic waste. Collection Centers Miami-Dade County has Permanent Home Chemical Collection Centers that accept oil-based paints, the liquid form of latex paints, pesticides, solvents, pool chemicals, unbroken fluorescent light bulbs and other household items. The centers are free and available to non-commercial residents only. The centers are located in west Dade and south Dade. For specific questions regarding waste disposal, call Miami-Dade County’s Answer Center at 311. To report stormwater violations of an immediate nature, call the Complaint Desk 24 hours a day, 7 days a week at 305.372.6955.
