umbers are a big deal to runners. Twenty-six
point two is not twenty-six. Three hours ten
minutes and fifty-nine seconds brings a smile.
Three hours eleven minutes and zero seconds brings tears.
KP Half / 5K Pre-Race Picture
Numbers are how us runners measure improvement. It‘s
also how this club can see the tremendous growth we have
made on the San Francisco racing scene over the last few
years.
The increase in Pamakid Runners‘ participation at the Pacific Association Cross Country Championships (PA XC
Champs) has mirrored the increase in club participation at
other races. The Pamakids‘ return to Pacific Association
races began in earnest with the 2007 cross country season.
We had 12 women race at the PA XC Champs, scoring
(obviously) in just the Open Women‘s division. In 2008, we
grew to 18 runners and had teams in the Open Men‘s and
Women‘s divisions. In 2009, we grew again to 25 runners
with four scoring teams: Open Men, Open Women, Masters
Men, and Masters Women. The growth continued into
2010, when we again scored four teams and had 44 runners.

Another place to measure our club‘s race participation
growth has been runners at the Kaiser Permanente San
Francisco Half Marathon and 5K. We traditionally take a
team picture at the start line of the race. Not everybody who
races makes the picture but it‘s a good indicator of how our
club has grown. After a couple years with 22-28 people in
the picture, I set a goal to have 41 people in the picture this
year to match our club‘s 41st year. We got 46!

The numbers have really skyrocketed in the last couple
years. In relay events, such as the February Lake Merritt
Joggers & Striders‘ Couples Relay and the December Lake
Merced Christmas Relays, we are now often fielding double
digit numbers of teams.

In the spring, it is now a common sight to see 20 or more
Pamakids at races like the Across the Bay 12K, the Zippy
5K, the Marin Memorial Day 10K, and the Woodminster
Cross Country Run. I have a great memory from the 2008
Across the Bay race: After the race a group of us were
hanging out together at the finish line area cheering in our
fellow Pamakids. The Brightroom photographer took our
picture. When I later saw the picture it dawned on me, our
club is great. We were all smiling and enjoying each other‘s
company. We were a real team!

In the fall, the road race that used to draw the most Pamakids was the Banana Man Chase 5K. That race is no
more, so a lot of us find ourselves fulfilling our need to race
on the road at the Bridge to Bridge 7K/12K.

The first weekend in December means the Cal International
Marathon and Marathon Relay. This race has become a real
tradition on the Pamakid schedule, every year drawing more
and more people to Sacramento to experience the ―CIM
Meet Sheet.‖ What was once a handful of marathoners with
a relay team or two to keep them company has grown to be
the don‘t-want-to-miss trip of the year.
uniform. I wanted people to be proud of being a Pamakid
and proudly representing our club at races. The numbers
certainly suggest it has been a success.

The final numbers that show the growth of Pamakid Runners participation at races is the age-graded scoring. When I
started the age-graded scoring competition three years ago,
one of my hopes was to get more people racing in Pamakid

Jed Smith 50K
The first ultra event of the 2011 USATF PA "Ultra Running Grand Prix," the Jed Smith 50K is perhaps the fastest ultra
(not necessarily the easiest) on the west coast. But since JS is the first event and very early on the schedule (which ends at
the end of November) it is always a complicated race as one‘s legs are not used to the long runs yet. Still, Pamakids were
able to score the first points of the season. In the ultra world we need three runners to finish the race (under cut-off time)
and we got ‗em!

since he was 13 years old in 2007. Awww….how cute!

Try These Low-Key Marathons in California by George Rehmet
T
wo-hundred dollar rooms? One-hundred-twenty
dollar race entry fees? Fifteen minute lines for the
port-o-johns? Maybe this is the case for big city
marathons, but for small marathons in California, what is
lacking in prestige is made up for in lower costs and time
saved. Fellow Pamakid Gary Aguiar and I are on a quest
to be the first to complete 100 Alcatraz swims and 100
marathons. Doing the former was easy, but running the
marathons is harder due to time and costs. Over the last
several months, we found three low-key marathons that we
really enjoyed.
The Bizz Johnson Marathon, produced by Coastal Trail
Runs, is held in early October in the town of Susanville,
about six hours northeast of the Bay Area. The rails to trail
course goes from Westwood to Susanville in Lassen National Forest. The first eight miles of the course climb 280
feet and then it‘s downhill to the finish at Susanville, with a
1300-foot descent over the final 20 miles. The problem is
the race takes place at an altitude of 4,200' - 5,600'. Just as
you are hitting the wall
at mile 20,
you reach the
Susan River
Canyon
where you go
by orange
cliffs and
cross the
river 10 times GEORGE AND GARY AGUIAR AT THE BIZZ
JOHNSON MARATHON
on picturesque wooden railroad bridges and through two old railroad tunnels. I finished in 3:36:09 while Gary finished in
5:16:32. The finisher‘s medal is okay, but the scenery is
wonderful. Motels are inexpensive ($40 to $70). The entry
fee is just $70 plus $15 if you wish to take the shuttle. If
you‘re into natural scenery and soft surfaces, this is the
race for you. More info at: www.coastaltrailruns.com/
bizz_johnson.html
The Redding Marathon is held on the third Sunday in January. Motels are really inexpensive. In fact, our dinner cost
much more that our room. This race starts at an overlook
at Shasta Dam, runs over the dam, on a paved pathway
along the Sacramento River and finishes at the famous
Sundial Bridge. For $75, you get a long-sleeve tech shirt, a
bus ride to the start, and a nice medal. Unfortunately, I
took the first three steep downhill miles too quickly and
paid the price of a very last six miles to finish at 3:34:45.
Gary finished in 5:25:28. Otherwise, great community support was shown at the event. More info can be found at:
www.sweatrc.com/Redding_Marathon/index.html
For the final low-key marathon, I have to thank Gary for
letting me know about this event which he did in 2009.
The Buzz Marathon takes place at Camp Roberts near San
Miguel which is
north of Paso Robles (or three
hours south of the
Bay Area). Being a
military base, runners had to go
through security
clearance. The
start was punctuated by the rat-tattat of machine
guns and the
GEORGE REHMET AT THE
course is out and
BUZZ MARATHON
back in the countryside. Aid stations were staffed by community members
and the military. We were warned not to go off the road as
there can be unexploded munitions. The unbelievably
priced $40 entry fee goes to the San Miguel school‘s sports
program. At the finish, each marathoner got a bottle of
local wine and a dog tag with the name of the marathon
(Buzz refers to the school‘s mascot, a hornet). I was pleasantly surprised to take third overall out of 61 runners with
a time of 3:28:38. More info at www.buzzmarathon.org.
All three of these marathons were marked by the scenery
and low numbers which allow one to be with his or her
thoughts. Gary and I are fine without the mega crowd of
spectators or a crowded course. Moreover, the spirit of the
community comes out. For that one morning, a community can showcase their area. Finally, I just love the fact that
you go and race without all these hassles. So give one of
these marathons a chance or let us know of one you love.

hanks to everyone who participated in the 2011 Kaiser Permanente San Francisco
Half Marathon and 5K event. Our enjoyment of the beautiful day was tempered
by the sadness of having to report that runner Peter Hass passed away in the fin-
ish area after completing the race. We express our deepest sympathy to the runner's family and friends.
Please keep Peter Hass and his family in your thoughts and prayers. We have learned that
an education fund has been set up for his children. Donations may be sent to:

Journey or the Destination by Megan Nguyen
F
or the past three years, I've participated in the Saturday morning Presidio Sports Basement training
runs in January. The training runs are hosted by
our club and the Presidio Sports Basement, and led by
coach Andy Chan. The first year, I discovered that the runs
helped me greatly in preparation for our club‘s signature
race, the Kaiser Half Marathon. The bigger discovery and
pleasant surprise was that these training runs are so much
fun. I've met new friends who helped the training runs pass
without even feeling like I had run.
That first year, Coach Andy asked the team to help lead the
Saturday training groups sometimes and I jumped at the
chance, since I was going to do the runs and needed
a commitment so I would not skip any. I ran with the shortest distance group and met Olga, Elizabeth, Leo, Bob, Virginia, Bill and few other new runners. We ran, chatted about
running, kids, music, family and had great time. I also got to
know Malinda better, and was inspired by her to join the
Masters cross country team that year. Considering I had not
done any sport program before, running to me was just putting on shoes, heading out of the door, and putting one foot
in front of the other. That year I had a great time at cross
country, felt part of the team and was hooked on cross
country.
The second year and again this year, Coach Andy asked the
team to help with coaching the groups and I volunteered. I
actually look forward to January, now that I‘ve got the hang
of the courses and the rhythm of sweeping the back group.
It has become a game for me, especially this past year; I'd
run to a turn of the course, look for runners, give them direction, restroom/water info, then run back to look for the
back runners, run them up to the turn, then run ahead
catching up to the other group to the next turn; and repeat
until we all get back to the start.
Running through the Presidio is my favorite despite the fact
that it‘s more like a treasure hunt trying to keep track of
everyone through all the turns and alternating between trails
and road. It's a fun challenge, looking for all the runners,
and before I realize it, I've run longer than the intended
12
course. Poor Anders, this year he must have run at least the
whole half marathon length during the eight mile training
run.
I've enjoyed the training runs, making new friends, listening
to their questions and giving them race-day advice. The
training runs were even more meaningful for me than the
actual race itself, as I felt that I was helping new runners to
accomplish their goal. I hope I did as the new friends
helped me enjoy the journey even more.

Kaiser Half Marathon Training Runs by John Gieng
E
ach January, Andy Chan, president and coach of
the Pamakid Runners Club, leads open training
runs with assistant coaches in preparation for the
Kaiser Permanente (KP) San Francisco Half Marathon and
5km Fun Run. These runs are open to everyone and they
are free. I originally participated in these training runs to
prepare for my own KP Half Marathon race in 2008. In the
three years since then, I have been helping Andy as one of
his assistant coaches. In total, I must have participated in
this capacity at least ten times.
As long as I have been involved, the training runs begin and
end at the Presidio Sports Basement, just in the shadow of
the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. In addition to the fewer parking spaces available at Sports Basement due to ongoing road construction, this year‘s training
runs were different in the 9AM start instead of the usual
10AM start of past years. This is a love-hate change depending on who you ask. Personally, I like it.
Each training run begins with Andy giving brief description
of the course and introducing the assistant coaches and then
leading a group warm-up and stretching. Afterwards, the
main group is divided between the assistant coaches who
lead smaller groups that run different distances and paces.
Often times, the group spreads out considerably, so one of
the important jobs the assistant coach does is to ensure that
no one gets lost. One way to achieve this is to be visible.
Many of the assistant coaches wear their ―Go Green‖ shirts
because they are a bright fluorescent color people can see
from a mile away. I often get the ―I‘m glad you‘re wearing
that bright shirt‖ comment from those unsure of the way.
The training runs often meander on the waterfront, extend
across the Golden Gate Bridge, or wind through the Presidio. These routes are always popular with runners and, because we lucked out with beautiful weather this year, they
were even more appreciated.
versation with a variety of people. We want to know if they
have run a half marathon before and what their goals are for
the upcoming race. Andy asks his assistant coaches to float
around through the group, which gives us a chance to run
with ―slower‖ runners, with the ―middle of the packers,‖ or
out front with the speedsters (at least I try to keep up with
them as long as I can). This affords me opportunities to
hear all sorts of different perspectives and running goals.
I‘ve run with a spectrum of runners, from those that are
really beginners, never having raced a half marathon before
to those that are targeting specific times or trying for a PR
(personal record). I have to tailor what I do and say on the
fly in order to offer the most help. I frequently get the general questions beginning runners often ask. However, many
runners are less verbal and just need someone to pace them
through these longer runs. They want encouragement and
some recognition of their efforts. Often, a ―good job‖ or
―looking good‖ is all they need. A smile, nod, or wave as
they pass by gives me that nice fuzzy feeling inside.
Because of the different distances and paces in each training
run, the groups arrive back at the Presidio Sports Basement
in waves. Sports Basement is very gracious in providing
some snacks and drinks for us hungry and thirsty runners
after our long run and the post-run period is a great opportunity to mingle with other runners and to talk with those I
missed during the run. Of course, because we‘re at a sporting goods store, many of us are there to shop for some gear.
One of the Saturdays is a shopping party day with a generous 20 percent discount at the store. Time to load up on
running shoes, socks, or anything else that fancies us.
As an assistant coach, I hope that I can positively impact
other runners. In return, I get to meet a bunch of people
who love to do what I do: run. Who can ask for anything
more? I feel lucky!
If we manage to get everyone going in the right direction, a
second important job as an assistant coach is to be available
to lend an ear, answer questions, and provide advice and
encouragement. We try to make an effort to engage in con13

o all of the 91 Pamakids who helped at the Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon either Saturday, Sunday, at the
Sports Basement, or in other ways, “Thank You Very Much!” Many Pamakids stepped up to be Captains this
year. Everyone did an amazing job. We could not have done this event without the dedicated Pamakid Volunteers.
In the 1970s and 1980s, the club had a reputation for conducting the BEST races. We were the runners who put on running
races for runners; we were highly respected. Today we still shine bright and respected in the running community for organizing and conducting running races.
Congratulations to all of the Pamakids who ran. Many of you streamed down the hill past the Volunteer booth. You all
looked so good in the Pamakid green. This was another spectacular Pamakid event. GO GREEN!

Running for a Better Tomorrow by Bill Dake
W
e run for self improvement, better health, better times, and longer distances. We set goals for ourselves
that are always in front of us and strive to get to that place, and when we get there we set new goals and
run towards them. These goals are always just out of reach and mimic life‘s struggles. We never quite
reach our ideals, as they are always ahead of us. With age comes experience and it is the best teacher.
Over the years, I have produced some charity runs as Pamakid events. One was at Lake Merced for a young lady, Nicky,
who lived next door to me in South San Francisco. She suffered from skeletal dysplasia and her leg bones would not stay
in their sockets. She would actually walk with her legs out of her hip sockets and in front of her. Each step was extremely
painful, yet she would endure anything just to be able to walk. Shriner‘s Hospital had provided medical treatment and performed an operation that was unsuccessful. Unfortunately, it is difficult to secure ongoing treatment from Shriner‘s as
there are so many kids waiting for medical assistance. Nicky‘s mother found a doctor on the east coast who was having
some success with these problems and agreed to treat her at a reduced price. An Indian casino agreed to donate the profits
from a bingo game played in her name and we conducted a Pamakid fundraiser for her around Lake Merced. Becky Rozewicz and Mike Tehaney came through for Nicky with most of the donations from their pledge sheets. These collective efforts helped Nicky pay for the second operation which was successful.
I want to conduct more events for whatever good causes we can, and why not? I felt then as I do now that presenting
events for charity would do well for the club and provide tremendous value to the community. Pamakids used to produce
a lot of runs, all certified and I was much involved with all of them. Pamakids are fortunate to have in our midst so many
good and talented people who volunteer for the rest of us.
If anyone is interested in conducting some similar events, contact me at BillDake@sbcglobal.net

embers of the DSE and Pamakid Runners two of the oldest running clubs in San Francisco – gathered together recently at the Hyatt
Embarcadero in San Francisco to honor the trophy awarded to the very first winner of the Bay to Breakers, Bobby

As May 15 approaches, this event was a pleasant reminder
of how far the B2B has come in 100 years.

manager, Angela Fang, commented that this first B2B trophy has a place
alongside the World Series Trophy and the Americas Cup
trophy, as all great things come in threes. The 1912 trophy,
a sterling silver cup, is only 18 inches high and still gleams
like a new penny, demonstrating the great care it has been
given for 100 years. Vlught‘s name and finishing time are
inscribed on one side and the race name and date on the
other.
Another B2B celebrity in attendance was Mary Etta Boitano, who in 1974 at age 10, was the youngest winner in the
history of the Bay to Breakers. She went on to win two
more straight B2B titles. Mary was the one of the original
Pamakids and is currently coaching high school runners up
in Napa, and she plans to run in this year‘s B2B.
After the brief ceremony, runners headed out for group fun
runs. Fred Haber took a group on the B2B course while a

The Penultimate Napa Valley Marathon by Tony Rossmann
29 Down, One to Go
E
ach year since its 1979 founding, the Napa Valley
Marathon has included day-before briefings that
have evolved into the Napa Valley Marathon College – substantively about the best expo program to be
found in a race of any size. And for most of the past decade,
George Rehmet and I have served as Pamakid members of
this college faculty.
But we remain more than ever junior faculty. That is because
this year the ―core curriculum‖ was presented by what may
remain the greatest assemblage of Boston greats west of
Route 128: four-time winner Bill Rogers, two-time winner
and world-best Joan Benoit Samuelson, dueller-in-the-sunwith-Salazar Dick Beardsley, and recently-retired BAA race
director Guy Morse – all moderated by running‘s premier
journalist Joe Henderson.
Guy Morse got right to business, explaining the process by
which the BAA decided to install a ―rolling admission‖ procedure so future Boston entries depend on more than a
flash of luck in computerized registration. (This year Boston
sold out in eight hours, and that was in October, before
New York or CIM runners were even able to qualify.) Registration will open first to those who qualify in better than
20 minutes ahead of their standards, and then roll in five-
minute increments to that standard. The existing standards,
including the 59-second advantage for qualifying right on
the minute, will apply in 2012, as advertised in the current
open period. In 2013 the standards will be lowered by five
minutes across all age and sex groups.
The BAA reached this solution after months of deliberation
and expert consultation, and then applied it against the national running database. By opening the admissions even
later in the year, the BAA anticipates two to three weeks to
fill the field. To expand the qualifying field in future years,
TONY ROSSMANN AT THE START WITH JOANIE AND OCTOGENARIAN WORLD-RECORD HOLDER JOHN KESTON
the BAA will eliminate many non-charity special entries,
and work with the eight cities and towns to produce a starting field of 30,000. (Guy explained that over the decades the
charity runners have become immutable constituents of the
marathon and source of community support for it.)

Dick Beardsley updated last year‘s college lecture to report
he can now run 50-60 miles a week on his new (artificial)
knees. He hopes to run Boston in 2012, 30th anniversary of
his duel with Salazar. Recalling that classic 1982 finish, Dick
in the last mile pulled a hamstring and fell behind, only to
then trip into a pothole, which stretched out the cramp and
put him back in the closest chase in Boston history. (Dick
tells this story with such great joy, reminding me of the Yale
players in their 1968 29-29 ―loss‖ to Harvard who now real-

ize that but for that result they would be otherwise largely
forgotten.)
The next morning‘s race proved that with no speed, endurance remains my only redeeming trait. Proving that the neuropathy has indeed progressed from the last two Napas
when I just beat the 6-hour time limit, had most of the midday in the drizzle to myself with a 7:20 finish. Still alive to
retire with number 30 next year. And implementing Joanie‘s
plan, the right time to look forward next month to the last
Boston.
GEORGE REHMET WITH BILL RODGERS, GUY MORSE,
JOAN BENOIT-SAMUELSON
Joanie was the keynote. Ran her first marathon by accident
when she and Craig Virgin did a half on Bermuda and figured they could get back to the marathon start-finish on
their own quicker than a sag wagon. Looking beyond the
finish line, Joanie will quit when she can no longer qualify
for Boston. Reflections on the day between her LA 84 finish and the medal ceremony: losing the painter‘s hat she ran
in, spending the afternoon at the Olympic post office to
collect postmarks, resolving: don't let this moment of time
change the person you are. And it hasn‘t; keeps her medal
in a dresser that‘s inaccessible in the Maine summers when
the drawer swells. Pure Yankee; pure Bowdoin.
TONY ROSSMANN AND GEORGE REHMET
WITH ENGRAVED BOTTLE
At the evening pasta feed George and I were awarded engraved bottles, and a further award went to the person present with the most marathon finishes. Tamalpa‘s Darryl
Beardall retired from this competition when co-RD Dave
Hill got to around 150, leaving ultra legend Frank Bozanich
and me standing. We both sat down when Dave jumped
from 270 to 300, and took the intentional tie at 275
(confirming to each other that neither of us kept count any
more).

Jug n’ Rose Weekend and Social Event by Ed Baumgarten
A
total of 27 Pamakid members trekked to the Gold
Country the weekend of September 10
to participate in -or cheer on fellow Pamakids - in
the 7.7 mile Jug & Rose Race. At 6 a.m. Saturday morning,
we piled into eight cars to make our way to the starting line
in Volcano, CA. It was a very chilly morning – more-so
than in previous years- and we couldn't wait to start. At
7:15 a.m., the open walkers started, followed by the competitive walkers at 7:30am and then the runners at 8:00 a.m.
As we started to descend the final hill towards the finish
line, the sun was coming up and warm rays of sunshine filtered through the trees and we started to warm up. The
course is beautiful on a two-lane, quiet road with a meandering creek following us along the way. Some of the walkers picked and ate blackberries on the way, saying it was
for energy. The walkers cheered and gave encouragement
to the race participants as they passed them towards the
finish line.
At the awards ceremony, Giles Turner, race director and
Amador High School drama teacher, gave out the awards,
ribbons and t-shirts to all participants by name and city in
reverse order of finish, so all could be recognized. Below is
a list of the Pamakids who entered the event. Special mention to Theo Jones who finished 9th overall and first in his
age category with a finish time of 55:10; Marilyn Teeter who
placed second in her age group (1:53:26); Carolyn Teshima,
Ceis Wilden and Nancy Teshima, who place 2nd, 3rd and
4th, respectively in the competitive walk. Harry Cordellos
and Mike McAviney won awards for most inspirational,
BETTY AND PAT CUNNEEN, JEANIE AND THEO JONES
Mike again for entering the race from the farthest distance
(Colorado) and Tapanga Dorey for the best dressed award.
The Big Foot, Little Foot race-within-a-race between Harry
and Mike this year was again one by Mike. Both ran with a
sighted runner and all three finished together. When the
race tags were placed on the finish board, Mike's was placed
first, above Harry's name. In good racing spirit, Harry took
it like a man, but promised Mike he will beat him to the finish line next year.
22
After the race, we all gathered at the Waffle House for
a wonderful breakfast and then it was back to our motel
where we enjoyed swimming, relaxing and talking. Later
MIKE MCAVINEY, HARRY CORDELLOS, MARILYN TEETER
that afternoon, Harry played songs on - believe it or not - a
turkey baster and a saw, while Ed Baumgarten prepared and
served the traditional margaritas during the cocktail
hour. At 6:30 p.m., we all gathered for dinner at El Torero
Restaurant, where the Big Foot, Little Foot award was presented to Mike from Harry and everyone sang a Happy
Birthday to Pat Cuneen and a Happy Anniversary to Ed and
Sandy Baumgarten.
You know, the Pamakids have always been a family and
have a history of helping each other when needed. Well,
some of us think that Soonar Sam followed us up to
the gold country this year to play hide and seek tricks on
several of us as personal items went missing or were forgotten. But, true to form, we all helped out in locating items
and getting them back to their rightful owners. All in all,
everyone said they had a great time and want to return again
next year.

Join Nancy Hobbs, founder and executive director of the American Trail Running Association and coauthor of the book ―The
Ultimate Guide to Trail Running,‖ for a presentation of trail running. Nancy Hobbs will present 2 sessions based on the runner‘s
trail running experience:
Beginning Trail Running: Trail Running 101 at 1PM
This seminar will provide attendees with an introduction to trail
running and a definition of the sport. Tips for getting started will
include finding trails, choosing footwear, learning how to dress for
conditions, and what you may encounter as you hit the trails. This
is an introduction to the sport, but will also be a great session for
those who already enjoy the trails.
Advanced Trail Running: Novice to Experienced at 4PM
This seminar will delve into tips and techniques for the trail. You
will learn how to run better and more confidently on both uphills
and downhills. You will learn how to navigate steep, rugged trails
and what it‘s like to run at altitude. You will find out about opportunities to compete both nationally and internationally as a trail
and/or mountain runner. Beginners also welcome at this session.

Tragedy at the Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Half Marathon
RRCA Coastal California Newsletter
As many may have been aware of, a runner named Peter Hass
died after crossing the finish line of this popular race held in
Golden Gate Park on Super Bowl Sunday. My sympathies and
prayers go out to Peter‘s family and friends. There is an education fund has been set up for his children. Donations can be sent
to: CitiBank, 37 Orinda Way, Orinda, CA 94563. Gavin G. Hass,
Account #40040659431, ABA #321171184
Unfortunately, much speculation and distortion of information
has taken place in print media and over the internet. I say that
people should wait for the official findings. This quick round of
looking for someone to blame is hurtful in the long run as it
make villains out of good people that have devoted their own
time and energy to putting on a great race which was recognized
nationally as ―Road Race of the Year‖ by the RRCA and has been
awarded Western RRCA Regional Championship for the last
several years. The race presented by Pamakid Runners and produced by RhodyCo have donated significant amounts of the race
proceeds to local charities that have assisted those will illnesses,
poverty, and disabilities.
Having served on the Pamakids board of directors in the past and
as a state representative, I personally know these people who
want to enrich the lives of runners and the local community. The
Pamakid Runners have prided themselves as putting on ―a race
for runners by runners.‖ These folks have taken this loss hard as
well. This death is tragedy in another way as it seems to wipe
away the good that has been generated for the other runners and
community now and in the past 28 years.
There are blogs, opinion polls, and petitions to boycott now
roaming the internet which I personally plan NOT to participate
in. I do not need to add to the wildfire of speculation. But what I
am asking of you - the running community - is to be aware that
the people behind the race are good people with the best of intentions. In short, look at the history of race and the resulting
positive effects before passing judgment. My thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. In the long run, I truly
believe that Pamakid Runners will bounce back because they are a
resilient and determined group.
Headphones should NOT be promoted.

PHYSICALLY CHALLENGED/WHEELCHAIR DIVISIONS AT PAUSATF ROAD RACE GRAND PRIX
Working with fellow state rep. Simone Adair, PAUSATF president Irene Herman, and Geoff Turner of the Challenged Athletes
Foundation, we have incorporated divisions for runners with disabilities in several races. More info can be found at: http://
www.pausatf.org/data/2011/rrpcdivision.html
Please spread the word to runners with disabilities. If you need
help with adding divisions for runners with disabilities, please let
me know. The disabled organizations such as My Team Triumph
(www.myteamtriumph-ca.org/) and the visually impaired running
community are interested in having more running divisions as
well. Just like women wanting to race longer events nearly a half
century ago, there is a call to address this population.
2011 RRCA NATIONAL CONVENTION
From May 12 to 15, the 2011 RRCA Convention will be held in
the City of Fredericksburg, Virginia where American history is

the convention race will be Marine Corps Half Marathon. More
information can be found at www.rrcaconvention.org. I hope to
see you there. However, I am planning to leave earlier to do B2B!

WHAT TO DO WHEN UNFORTUNATE INCIDENT
OCCUR AT RACES OR CLUB EVENTS
Currently, the RRCA national office is assisting with the above
race organizers. In cases such as this in which emergency aid is
rendered, the RRCA is there to help. Here are some friendly reminders:
Contact myself or the RRCA national office to get an incident
form.
Be proactive while memories are still fresh.
Make sure that your insurance and dues have been paid for the
current year.
I hope to see all of you at the Presidio 10 weekend either at
Sports Basement on April 16 or at the RRCA booth on April 17.
Be safe and keeping on supporting our fellow runners and races!
