Be surprised by this place full of contrasts: its skilful construction and simple plan; its sumptuous sculptures and sober architecture; its elevated vault and mighty pillars... Take time to reflect in the crypt, where for centuries pilgrims have flocked to adore the relics of Mary Magdalene. Admire the capitals, a real comic strip in 99 episodes from the ever-imaginative Middle Ages. 1 5 UN E XTRAORDINAIRE LIVRE D’IMAGES 4 1 Take a guided tour and relive events from the monastery’s heyday. 2 3 4 Vézel ay - l a basilique 2 The “Mystic Mill”, one of the finest Burgundian Romanesque capitals. 3 Every day, the chants of the monks and nuns ring through the abbey church. . 4 The Great Tympanum in the narthex, one of the greatest masterpieces of Romanesque sculpture. 5 Discover the full extent of the building on a tour of the abbey church: cloister gallery, refectory, radiant chapels... Vé z el ay UN DES PLUS BEAUX VILLAGES DE FRANCE 6 In Vézelay, the Middle Ages and modernity sit side by side. Old hillside houses stand above magnificent vaulted cellars which, in past centuries, welcomed the crowds of pilgrims heading for Compostela, side streets winding their way towards the gardens, writer’s homes... Here, walkers, explorers and lovers of the past will find one surprise after another as they head up towards the basilica and discover the artists who left there mark here: Picasso appears alongside Calder, whose mobile dances in the air near works by Giacometti, Kandinsky, Miró, Léger and many more. Here, every stone, every door tells a story and takes you back in time on a journey between profane and sacred. 1 5 L’HISTOIRE SE RACONTE A CHAQUE PAS 4 2 3 © S.Wahl / ADT89 6 Vézel ay - vill age vézel ay 1 Staircase tower with mullioned windows, sculpted doors, wrought grilles… reminders of the past are everywhere. 2 An amazing museum of modern art: the Zervos museum. 3 La Porte Neuve: mighty ramparts surround the village. 4 Watercolour artists love the picturesque streets! 5 The cross of “La Cordelle” where St Bernard preached the 2nd crusade in 1146 6 Face-to-face with medieval sculpture: the “musée de l’oeuvre Viollet-le-Duc” Vig nobl e s e t Vi n s LE BOURGOGNE VÉZEL AY With its radiant robe and light gold gleam, Bourgogne Vézelay is a 100% Chardonnay white wine.
