Vézelay and the Vézelien: Burgundy in all
its diversity, with treasures like its sumptuous Romanesque basilica, a UNESCO
World Heritage Site, built on the top
of the “eternal hill”. A place where time
seems to have stood still.
And yet, what could be more vibrant
than this multi-faceted land, popular for
its subtle wines, renowned gastronomy,
range of outdoor activities, diverse
cultural heritage where traditions meet
modernity, active monastic community,
beautiful unspoilt countryside, and array
of festivals and events that take place
throughout the year?

Be dazzled by the beauty
of this immense Romanesque nave,
where the light makes the stone vibrate
in a never-ending dance, and come the
summer solstice, the sun traces a path of
light down the middle of the nave.
Be surprised by this place full of contrasts:
its skilful construction and simple plan; its
sumptuous sculptures and sober
architecture; its elevated vault and
mighty pillars...
Take time to reflect in the crypt, where
for centuries pilgrims have flocked to
adore the relics of Mary Magdalene.
Admire the capitals, a real comic strip in
99 episodes from the ever-imaginative
Middle Ages.

In Vézelay, the Middle Ages and modernity
sit side by side. Old hillside houses stand
above magnificent vaulted cellars which,
in past centuries, welcomed the crowds
of pilgrims heading for Compostela, side
streets winding their way towards the
gardens, writer’s homes...
Here, walkers, explorers and lovers of the
past will find one surprise after another
as they head up towards the basilica and
discover the artists who left there mark
here: Picasso appears alongside Calder,
whose mobile dances in the air near
works by Giacometti, Kandinsky, Miró,
Léger and many more.
Here, every stone, every door tells a
story and takes you back in time on a
journey between profane and sacred.

LE BOURGOGNE
VÉZEL AY
With its radiant robe and light gold gleam,
Bourgogne Vézelay is a 100% Chardonnay
white wine. Its floral nose with lightly
mentholated citrus notes reveals a fresh
flavour, sometimes with a hint of honey.
A spontaneous, subtle wine, delicious as
an aperitif. It goes wonderfully with fish,
crustaceans, white meat and...snails.
The purple robe of Bourgogne Rouge,
made from Pinot Noir grapes, takes on
a red gleam as the years go by. A supple,
rounded wine, with a nose of red berries
and peppery nuances, it goes perfectly
with delicate meats, fine charcuterie...

Places of history and memory
since prehistoric times, the villages of the
Vézelien contain a living heritage that
will take you on an extraordinary voyage
through the centuries.
A church here, a gem of Burgundian
Gothic art with its elegant bell-tower and
beautiful narthex; a Renaissance manor
there. A Gallic archaeological site here,
built near salt water springs; prehistoric
cave paintings there, hidden deep in the
caverns. A fortified farm here, winegrowers’ houses there, century-old trees
elsewhere... And everywhere, you’ll find
lovely villages for a relaxing stroll.
