Ride for the Dogs 2016 Offers More
Opportunity and More Challenge.
When
September 17th
comes around,
the air will be
vibrating with
the rumble of
engines, the
atmosphere will
be electric with
the excitement
of Ride for
the Dogs, as
200 riders or
more come
to Caring
Hands for
this year’s
Ride for the
Dogs.
This is
Caring
Hands
Humane
Society’s signature
fundraising event, but it is not just
that. Riders come year after year
because of the great ride it always
is. Because of the fun they have
at the event. Because they can
have a great ride, and win great
prizes while helping the animals
at Caring Hands.
Registration is being moved to
8:30 am to accommodate more
riders this year. We hope to make
this a smooth transition, but the
extra 30 minutes will help with
that.
It truly is the animals that benefit
from all of this. Each dog’s care
is roughly equal to $100, with the
initial medial help, and lodging.
With our goal this year being
approximately $10,000
raised, we
are counting
on our many
supporters
to help us
take care of
100 dogs with
this event.
This year, all
the participants
have a
chance to
win a Yamaha
V-Star Deluxe,
a 1300CC bike,
apretty big prize
for an event such
as this.
The V-Star
Deluxe is being
offered because
of a cooperative
venture with Dan’s Cycle, Shon
Chapman Insurance, and Brad
Woody Insurance.Check www.

and details on all parts of Ride for
the Dogs will be there before the
event. Rules for the motorcycle
promotion will be posted at the
event as well.
As always, we owe a profound

dogs we take in, treat, and find
homes for. It is that effort and the
rewards that come from that effort,

As in years past, Randy has
started creating images with dogs’
faces on motorcycle movie and
TV images new
and old. It may
be interesting
to you seeing
these and
speculating
where they may
have come
from.
We are seeing
a good deal of
enthusiasm,
and, at the time of this writing,
some fairly exciting possibilities
around the corner. For example,
this year KFDI is also participating in the event. Radio and
TV personalities are going to be
here. Big Dogs, Huge Paws will be
here. We will have some booths
set up with interesting people and
things.
We have some new partners
in this event, and all seems
to be going well. One of the
prizes offered for winning hands
is a white water rafting trip to
Colorado, complete with hotel
vouchers, horseback riding,
restaurant vouchers, and a gas
card.
This
year is not
without
challenges.
The
construction
on Kansas
roads has
presented
some
possible
route
changes, and fundraising comes
on some difficult times.
Bruno, the spokesdog from last
year is not lending his image as
much this year, as the emphasis
is going to be on the very exciting
addition of the motorcycle
promotion. The possibility of
winning a Yamaha V-Star Deluxe
has added a new element to
the ride!
Fortunately,
generous souls
have stepped
up even in a
down economy,
but some have
chosen not to,
and we are looking
forward to the participation from all of
those involved to help make up for
any shortfall.
This year pre-registration is $20,
while registration at the event is
$25 and does not come with the
T-shirt. Registration provides the
participant with Ride partiipation,
3 raffle tickets, a poker hand, a
meal, and, if you preregister, an
event T-shirt.
All proceeds go to help the dogs,
once initial expenses are paid
for. This means that all of those
who participate are able to have a
good time, win some great prizes,
and help the animals at the same
time.

Volunteer Orientation Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer orientation is
always on the fourth Saturday
of the month. Come join us for
orientation on these dates:

Opportunities to help are
always happening throughout the
year, and we are very grateful for
the many volunteers who help us
serve the animals, people, and
the community at large. We owe

freely of your time and effort.

Cookie Daze 2016
This year, Cookie Daze was a
big success! The money raised
helped the Harvey County Safe
House and Caring Hands Humane
Society. Both of these worthy
institutions help in areas where
those affected need assistance in
situations beyond their control.
The plight of all who are victims
of neglect and abuse, and that of
animals that have been displaced,
neglected and abused. Events
such as this make that support
possible.
This is truly a unique event,
with a 5K run, and cookie stations
throughout the event.
Runners help support the cause,
but also, many cookies were
eaten, and many prizes won.
All in all, a very successful
venture.
We have cats
ready to go to
good homes.
This is the time of year when we
have a bunch of cats. They are
cute, and some of those are cute
kittens that will steal your heart.
We always get more this time
of year,
and they
want to
go to
loving
homes
like
yours.

What Happens to Your Pets When School Starts?
Now it’s time for kids to think
about starting school again. The
house is going to be empty, the
family gone. The one who this
really effects that you might not
have thought of is the family pet.
Your pet may feel lonely or
abandoned. They may feel lost
in the shuffle. They may even get
depressed. It is in those times
that animals often search for ways
to keep themselves entertained.
Some of those ways you may not
like.
In my own case, my son was
with us with his dogs for some
time. When he left, and took his
dogs with him, our American
Bulldog, Karma started acting
on her feelings of loneliness and
boredom. She tore open the sofa
cushions and ate some of the
stuffing.
Not only was this bad and
destructive behavior, but it was
potentially life-threatening to her.
In our case, we took care to
take her on walks, and we went to
Caring Hands Humane Society to
look at a suitable companion for
her.
The first few dogs we saw,
Karma did not take to, and we
thought we had struck out. We
tried again. This time, the two
dogs really hit it off. This is why
it is a good idea to bring your
animal for meet and greets before
you adopt, but that is a subject for
another time.
There are some other things you
can do to lessen the trauma your
animal may feel at the changes
going on in your home.
You can get smart toys such as
food puzzles for them to work for
their treats. Kibble dispensers,
and such things work. Keep
several different ones around to
mix them up.
If your dog loves to walk, you
can walk to the bus stop, or to
school. Or you could take your pet
with you in the car to take the kids
to school.
Some stores welcome pets.
In such cases, you could take
your pet with you when you
do your shopping. Just don’t
leave them alone in a hot
car. Actually, leaving your pet
an intensive thing, or just hiring a
dog walker to make sure your dog
gets some exercise and time out
of the house.
Or you could do what we
decided to do in our family and
get a companion for your pet.
Remember that any solution you
pick comes with pros and cons.
It really is a personal decision.
What works for one family does
not necessarily work for another,
and different pets have different
personalities as well, and may not
react positively to the solution you
picked.
Remember that your pets are
family too. A little thoughtfulness
can go a long way toward
reminding them that you care for
them and their well-being.

idea in general, and you might
be surprised just how little heat,
or cold for that matter, it takes to
make conditions unbearable or
even dangerous.
You can find a Doggy Day-care
for your pet, and they can enjoy
the companionship of other dogs.
You can hire someone to watch
your pet, and take care of them
while you are away. This could be

Bruno’s Summertime Tips
Bruno is a smart dog...
He has some suggestions to
help you take good care of your
pets in this hot weather.
Tip Number One:
Always keep plenty of water
available.
Unlike our human friends, we
can’t just go to the fridge or the
faucet, and pour ourselves a drink.
And our need for water is greater
than our need for food. When
our bodies are sapped by hot
weather, water is essential, and
if we spend a lot of time outside
in this weather, it makes it even
more critical. But this is important
for indoor pets as well. Water is a
basic need.
Tip Number Two:
We need plenty of shade.
If we are outside in this heat, we
need some place to cool down.
Also, you may not think we can
get sunburn, but that would be
wrong. Shorthaired dogs like me
are particulary succeptable to
this. Bring us in if you can in this
heat, but at least provide us with
the water and the shade to get us
some relief from the heat.
Tip Number Three:
If the pavement is too hot for
your hand, it is too hot for my
feet.
I love to go on walks. I love
to spend time with my human
friends, and I love the excercise,
and the time to socialize, but
I don’t wear shoes, and the
pavement can be damaging to
the pads of my feet. You can
purchase booties to go on my feet,
and those might be a good idea
in the Winter, as well when the
ice and snow could be harmful.
Put your hand on the pavement
for 10 seconds to see how hot it
is. Maybe an alternative walking
route in grass would be nice, or
maybe we don’t go in the heat
of the day. We could go early in
the morning perhaps. Also, as a
side note, long walks might be too
much in the heat of the day.
These are
jus a few
tips. Bottom
line is this...
If it is too
hot for you,
it might be
too hot for
me. Take
care of your
four-legged
friends.
