Happy Autumn! Our rainy season has started with delightful sun breaks
in between deluges. Rain or clouds make a wonderful backdrop for colorful
leaves. It is also the season for spider webs. Tumwater Falls Park on a foggy
morning is an excellent place to photograph spider webs.
I am pleased to announce that at the last general meeting, Colleen Easley
was elected as our new vice-president. Thank you Colleen for continuing our
tradition of dynamic leadership. Thanks also to our nominating committee of
Gene Pardee, Frank Townsend and Wes Kirkpatrick for their diligence in finding
a candidate.
Tuesday October 22, 2013 is the Annual Scavenger Hunt Banquet. This
is a wonderful opportunity for us to share our favorite images that we have taken
over the past year or to share the images we have taken for the scavenger hunt
list. This year the banquet will be held at River’s End Restaurant at the Tumwater Valley Golf Club. Please read Linda Foss’ directions for reservations later
in the newsletter.

County Fair which someone found objectionable, was
postponed until the November meeting.
New Business: The club's Webmaster, Dave Simmerman, submitted a new contract proposal for 2014.
(Dave manages the club's web site for a fee.) His proposal raised several questions, i.e. is there a back-up

of the site, the registration terms etc. Rosalind is going
to contact Dave and will report back to board at the
November meeting.

was a great conference, I'm only sorry more of us

On September 15, Wes Kirpatrick, my wife Terri and I
attended the 75th Annual Conference of the Photographic Society of America in Portland Maine. My
first thought would be to tell you how incredible the
state of Maine is and we only saw a little. There are so
many bays, coves and villages one could spend weeks
traveling and photographing. The conference itself

NATURE PHOTOGRAPHY AT ITS BEST!
Our fall meeting will be November 2 at Portland State University in Portland, OR. We will open the
doors at 8:30 AM, and the program will begin at 10 AM. The invited speaker will be Robert O’Toole, under
the generous sponsorship of SIGMA.
Robert is an internationally published photographer and a BBC / Shell Wildlife “Photographer of the Year”
award winner. He is recognized as one of the leading photographers working in the nature tour industry for
more than 20 years. Robert’s morning presentation is entitled “A Passion for Nature Photography” and his afternoon presentation is “Exploring the World of Macro Photography.” Treat yourself to www. robertotoolephotography.com. Do bring your digital camera bodies for sensor cleanings at a bargain price by Advanced
Camera.
The projected image competition will be exclusively digital. Send a maximum of three digital files as
email attachments, each smaller than 3 MB in size, to NPPNW.submissions@gmail.com. Include text in
your email message that describes the attachments. Your digital files must be received no later than October
25.
PLEASE ALSO NOTE THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS FOR DIGITAL
PHOTO SUBMISSIONS:
The file names for submitted images must have the format: Photo Title_by_PhotographerName_X.jpg,
where “PhotoTitle” is your title for the photo, “PhotographerName” is your name, and X is a 1character code of P, S or W for Plantlife, Scenic or Wildlife, respectively.
In addition, participants are encouraged to bring a maximum of two prints. The prints may be matted
but not framed. The total external dimensions (including mat) must not exceed 48 inches (length + width).
The categories for the print competitions are the same as those for the projected images. We will again use a
“limited hand of man” rule. Any man made object in the entry should not be a major or significant portion of
the image.
Exit I-405 at SW Sixth Ave. From some directions, it will be necessary to use Exit 1C and make your
way back to Sixth Ave. Travel approximately 3 blocks on Sixth Ave. after its elevated intersection with I-405.
After crossing College and then Hall Streets, turn left into Parking Structure One. Parking in the upper levels
of the ramp is available by paying $6.00 at the entrance Kiosk which is usually manned after 7 AM. If no attendant is there, proceed to the lower level where "Pay to Park" machines are available for the limited number
of lower level parking spaces. We will be meeting in Lincoln Hall (1620 SW Park Ave.), see A6 on the campus map at URL http://www.fap.pdx.edu/floorplans/docs/LH_l1285026970.pdf. To walk to Lincoln Hall from
the parking structure, proceed West on either Hall or Harrison to Broadway; once on Broadway proceed North
- against the flow of traffic to Market Street -(you will have walked by the front of Lincoln Hall where construction makes entry difficult); turn left (West) on Market - gainst the flow of traffic again; Enter Lincoln Hall
at its NW corner where there is a wheelchair ramp; Go down to the lower level where our meeting area will be
to your left.
