Fall Meeting
Our fall meeting will be held on
Sunday, October 5th at the Rutgers
EcoComplex in
Columbus/Bordentown, NJ. We will
start the meeting at 12:30 PM with a
potluck luncheon so we can all catch
up, share summer stories and spend
some time with our guest speaker.
President’s Message
With the daylily bloom season coming to a close, I would like
to take this opportunity to thank everyone who participated in
and supported our efforts during the busy summer events. From
the club members’ Open Gardens to Daylily Day to our first
Rutgers Open House event to the ever-popular club auction,
everyone’s hard work and dedication to furthering our efforts to
share our joy of growing daylilies was very much appreciated!
Please join us at our Fall meetings and events as we take a
break from the garden, learn new things about daylilies and
make plans for the next season! Enjoy! - Jane

Gardens, Virginia will be our featured
speaker starting at 1:30 PM. He has
generously donated Small World
introductions for door prizes and a
50/50 auction.
The EcoComplex is a beautiful facility
with plenty of parking and easy access
from major highways. We will have our
luncheon in the Atrium and move to the
auditorium for our meeting.

Club News
New Daylily Resource Library
Starting with the November 2nd meeting, club members
will have access to our new daylily resource library.
Through donations and other accumulations, we now
have several copies of books about daylilies, both old
and new. These books will be available at all meetings
so club members can sign out and borrow books to
learn more about the history, culture and landscaping
with daylilies. A list of titles will be available on our
website and sent to all members via email.
Joanne Countryman has volunteered to coordinate the
library and track the books. Thank you to Rosemary
Staba for the recent book donation and to Joanne for
helping out with this new project! If anyone has daylily
books to donate to the library, please contact Joanne at
jozie.c@gmail.com.
Business and Planning Meeting on November 2
at Deep Cut Gardens, Middletown, NJ
Our last meeting of the year will be a chance to review
the club events and activities of 2014 and discuss ideas
and plans for the upcoming year. The meeting will also
include a slide presentation of the tour gardens from
the Region 3 Summer Meeting in Richmond and the
AHS National Convention in Asheville. Take a peak
on page 4.
GSDG Daylily Display Bed at Rutgers
Gardens
We have begun preliminary discussion with Rutgers
Gardens to have a daylily display bed on the garden
grounds. This will be an exciting new project for the club
next summer and will help us with our goal to educate
the public about daylilies and share our passion and joy
for growing them.

Small World Gardens, Virginia
Small World Gardens, located in Chester,
Virginia, not far from Richmond, was on tour
during the 2014 Region 3 Summer Meeting.
When the tour bus pulled into the
neighborhood of neatly spaced, compact lots, it
became very clear that the garden would be true
to its name. Larry, Paulette and Michael Miller
have created a garden wonder in every nook
and cranny of their small, suburban space,
including a backyard bed with 1,500 to 5,000 of
their own seedlings. Their tiny front yard
consists of display beds with Small World’s
newest introductions and a wonderful collection
of Jamie Gossard’s daylilies. “Small World
Christmas Candy”, Miller-M., 2013 was the hit
of the show in the display beds with only one
bloom graciously opening for the tour day.
Walking through the gate into the backyard
there are flowerbeds filled with perennials,
colorful annuals, hosta and whimsical garden
art. With only a small backyard living space,
the rest of the area is packed with rows and
rows of registered daylilies and seedlings.
There is never enough time to spend in the
gardens during AHS tours. You could easily
spend all day in this Small World!
Michael Miller will join us as the guest speaker
on October 5th at the EcoComplex in
Bordentown/Columbus. He will share his
knowledge of hybridizing and gardening with
daylilies, especially in small spaces!
A Special Thank You
The Delaware Valley Daylily Society has generously
donated over 150 double fan daylilies of different
varieties to the Garden State Daylily Growers to use
for our club fundraisers next year. They have been
lined out and planted at Falcon Turn Daylilies for
safe keeping over the winter. Thank you so much
DVDS! We appreciate your thoughtfulness and
generosity!

2014 AHS National Convention in Asheville, NC
Slightly Different Daylilies
Vivid, rich colors, impeccable display beds filled
with daylilies and beautifully placed garden plants
framed by the Blue Ridge Mountains – this is a
daylily lover and photographer’s dream!
Laughing Crow Garden
A beautiful collection of perennials, shrubs, trees,
garden art and sculptures, artfully designed with several
daylilies mixed in.
Bear W Daylily Garden
Beautifully grown daylilies, cleverly arranged in
winding and terraced beds made this a fun garden
to visit.
Blue Ridge Daylilies
Rows and rows of daylilies create a sea of color as
far as the eye can see. Introductions and seedlings by
Bob Selman and Dale Hensley together with quality
daylilies from other nationally recognized
hybridizers on display.

Welcome New Members!
We welcomed so many new members to the
club during the summer that there wasn’t
enough room on the last page to list them all!!
We are delighted to have you join the Garden
State Daylily Growers to share your passion
and joy of growing daylilies!
Jill Nielsen –Is interested in all aspects of
growing daylilies, including hybridizing. Her
favorite hybridizers are Peat, Petit, Lambertson,
Stamile and Trimmer. Her favorite blooms have
interesting eyes, halos and extremely ruffled
edges and teeth.
Mike Buggey – Joined us at Rutgers Gardens.
He likes gold and dark colored daylilies,
especially doubles and spider forms.
Cynthia Price – Enjoys collecting and
gardening with all colors and forms of daylilies.
She is also a beekeeper and raises alpacas.
Jerri Barclay – Joined us at Rutgers Gardens.
She is new to daylilies and is partial to peach
colored blooms.
Judy Rodgers - Joined us at Rutgers Gardens.
Her favorite daylily colors are yellow and red in
double forms.
Priscilla Cordero – Joined us at Rutgers
Gardens. She is a novice daylily grower.
Melissa Rozecki – A long time daylily collector
with an extensive wish list. She likes single and
spider forms in all colors and would like to
learn more about hybridizing. Her favorite
hybridizers are Kinnebrew, Herrington, James
and Buntyn.
Jeannie Francis – Has been growing and
collecting daylilies for quite some time. She
appreciates all forms and is interested in
hybridizing.
Dorothea Grippo – Joined us at Rutgers
Gardens. She is interested in all aspects of
gardening.
Jan Schmidt – Joined us at Rutgers Gardens
and is an avid gardener who is new to daylilies.
She is partial to the double, spider and unusual
form blooms in pink and salmon colors.
Gretchen Haines – Has recently become a true
daylily enthusiast and is quickly increasing her
collection. She is partial to unusual forms.
Daru Sharp - Grows a variety of daylilies in her
lovely garden and has recently begun to
hybridize. She is partial to pink and yellow
single forms. Her favorite hybridizer is Paul
Owen.
Carol Hoey – Joined us at Rutgers Gardens.
Her favorites are double form daylilies.
Patricia Kaufhold – Joined us at Rutgers
Gardens. She likes both single and double forms
in yellow, orange and red.

Penny Lehman – A self-proclaimed “complete
novice” daylily grower. Her favorites are single
blooms in pink, yellow, white and purple.

Membership in the American Hemerocallis Society (AHS), our
national organization, is truly worthwhile for daylily enthusiasts
whether you are an experienced grower, hybridizer or novice.
Becoming a member of AHS will open up a whole new world
