What is the VHS?
The Volkshochschule Frankfurt am Main (VHS) is the biggest provider of courses for adults in the Rhein-Main area.
As a municipal college, partially subsidised by the City of Frankfurt,
we provide courses in many subject areas such as creative skills,
health, sport, languages, computing, business and social skills,
leisure and self-development.
While many courses are held in German, we also offer a wide range
of courses and events in English (VHS speaks English).
Whatever your age, if you want to get that dream job, secure a place
at university, or just want to do something for pleasure, then it’s
time to take a closer look at our Volkshochschule programme. Why
not learn a new skill or take up a new interest and at the same time
meet new people?
Our courses run during the day, in the evenings and at weekends. We

Learn German with the VHS
Languages are a major focus of our programme
Learning a language at the VHS goes hand-in-hand with
intercultural understanding – this is particularly true of
our courses in German (DaF), with participants from
all over the world.
We are also your trusted partner for German naturalisation since we not only carry out the necessary language training and tests, but are also a test
centre for the German naturalisation test for which
we can prepare you in our courses if required.
In our courses you will speak, listen to, read and
write German. Right from the very start German is the
common language in your class where people of all nationalities and mother tongues come together. It is very important that
participants in a course have a similar language level so before the
first course registration we assess everyone’s language level in an
assessment test and interview.
Learning German at the VHS not only leads to success – which
of course also depends on you – but is interesting and fun. Your
teachers are native speakers or near native speakers. They are
qualified teachers and attend regular training sessions. They are interested in people from different cultures and support them in their
learning.

In the German department we offer an extensive and differentiated
programme of courses at competence levels A1 to C2 at a time to

Is English your first language? Are you learning English
at the moment? Have you already learnt it at school and
are looking for a chance to use it?
We invite you all to join one of our special courses, workshops or
events – in English. Here you can do something you’re interested in
– some of you will be doing it in the language you feel happiest in;
others will be improving their English. All can learn and benefit from
each other.
These courses are suitable for both native and non-native speakers
of English.
Frankfurt Walking Tours
Let’s take a walk through different parts of Frankfurt and learn about
its people, places and fascinating insider stories.
Cookery
Come on a culinary journey to discover the flavours of
for example India, the Caribbean, Florida or Israel.
Try out the exciting variety of flavours in our “fusion food” or “crossover cooking” courses which
combine the ingredients and cooking methods
of various culinary traditions and ethnic cuisines.
English Theatre Club
See current productions at The English Theatre
Frankfurt and and take the chance to discuss them
with others afterwards. Specials include a backstage
tour as well as meeting and talking to professionals
working in the world of an English Theatre.
Discussion Forums
Learn about and discuss with others critical issues in the world
today. Our discussion forums deal with for example the current
situation in the USA or Europe, consumer protection or modern-day
economics. You don’t need to be an expert to participate. If you are
interested in how the “real world” works and on which theories this
is based, join us for some lively discussion.
Acting on Impulse – Discover the actor in you
Through a series of warm-up exercises, games, improvisation activities, and work on short scenes, you will build awareness and confidence for your performance, find ease and focus in your creativity as
well as explore dramatic characters and situations.
Creative Writing
Improve your writing skills in a positive environment designed to
support your creative progress. Techniques such as brainstorming,
mind mapping and clustering will help you create and explore
material for your own writing. You may even like to contribute to
our VHS literary magazine “Pandora”. You can see what previous
students have produced at www.vhs.frankfurt.de (enter PANDORA in
the Schnellsuche box, top left-hand corner)
English Book Clubs
Exchange your thoughts on a fascinating range of novels, short
stories or poetry by important authors writing in English.
English Film Club – British and American cinema
A chance to see and discuss a selection of non-mainstream films in
English.
Frankfurt OperaTalk
English-speaking opera fans, from novices to experts, meet at the
VHS to get acquainted with each other and with the lively
Frankfurt opera scene.
Fitness and Dance
Let your body sway along to the
rhythms of Hawaiian Hula, get swept
up into the wonderful world of
Bollywood, swing your hips to the
Latin rhythms of Salsa and Merengue
or learn how to safely stretch the
major muscles in your body with our
Active Isolated Stretching course or yoga
workshops.
“Violence – Seeing – Helping”
Courageous behaviour in dangerous situations
A free workshop offered within the frame of a city campaign aimed
at preventing and deescalating violence in our city. Here you will
discuss, gather and practise behaviour patterns, which will help you
avoid becoming a victim of violence and will enable you to intervene
and help without getting in danger yourself.
Art Appreciation
Join our Art and Conversation groups to learn about the works of
key artists and to visit and discuss current exhibitions in Frankfurt.
