EDITOR'S NOTE
After a year's furlough, it's good to be back! This first issue
of the. year contains a continuation of several articles started
last year, and begins a new article on interments in St. Patrick's Cemetery. On another page will be found a list of the
services offered by the Society.
ST. PATRICK'S CEMETERY
Philadelphia Road, Baltimore.
This article is taken from two sources. The first"source is
a series of inscriptions which were copied in November 1934 by
Mrs. Frank A. Suter, Mrs. W. H. Pearce, and Mrs. A. L. Latham of
the General Mordecai Gist Chapter, N.S.D.A.R. The typescript was
placed in filing Case A at the Maryland Historical Society. They
copied all of the inscriptions they could read because the
cemetery was to be moved since a new highway to Philadelphia
might be built over the land. Entries from this source are
entered with no other indication of source.
The second source is William N. Wilkins' "Early Baltimore
City Burial grounds and Their Interment Records, 1834-1840,"
found at the Maryland Historical Society. A typical entry gives
name, sex, age, cause of death, burial in the week ending a given
date, and the cemetery where buried. Entries from this source are
indicated by (W). The symbol "b/w/e" means "buried week ending."
In transcribing these inscriptions, the names have been
alphabetized, except for grouping husbands and wives together,
and the data has been presented in a condensed format that does
not omit any relevant details.
Wilkins indicates that in 1822 St. Patrick's Cemetery was at
Wolfe & Lombard. In 1850 the cemetery was on Philadelphia Road.
The 1877 Atlas of Baltimore County shows St. patrick's
Cemetery just north of Philadelphia Road, on a tract bounded by
East Jefferson St., Potomac St., Orleans St., and Loney's Lane

THE BURNHAM BIBLE
It is the purpose of the Baltimore County Genealogical
Society to publish Bible records pertaining to local families .
Information is arranged in the fashion of a family record, and
in order to save space, the exact times of birth or death, and
repetitious phrases have been eliminated.
Where several Bibles have been used in compiling the entry,
each is designated at the beginning of the entry, and the source
of specific statements is indicated by the reference letter in
parentheses .
Where appropriate, annotations to the entries have been "
added after the information.

Notes;
16. Richard Taylor of Baltimore County died last Wednesday
in his 49th year, leaving a wife (Baltimore Federal Ga-zette, 29
Oct. 1805). Taylor notes in the possession of the Editor show
that Richard, son of Samuel and Patience (Tipton) Taylor, was b.
4 April 1767, and d. 1805, having m. 2 Feb. 1789 Clemency
Thompson. No doubt she is the Clemency Taylor who m. Benjamin
Hart.
17. Jacob Taylor, son of Samuel and Patience, was born 18
Feb. 1782 (Taylor notes in the possession of the editor). If he
was the Jacob who m. Sarah Thompson, he would have only been 17
years old at the time.

Immigrant Ancestors of Marylanders , as Found in Local Histories .
By Bill and Martha Reamy. Pipe Creek Press (358 pp., indexed,
paper; $40.00), the book has several purposes: The first was to
help researchers specifically pinpoint immigrant ancestors.
The second purpose of the book was to provide a partial
index to many worthy, out-of-print, unindexed Maryland source
records. Although the entries are undocumented, they are brief
and researchers should follow up by obtaining a print of the
original article. Most contain extensive additional data on the
family.
A typical entry reads: JOHN JACOB BALTZELL, from Alsace,
Germany in middle of last century, during the Seven Years' War
there. He settled at Philadelphia and c.1750 located in
Frederick, MD. He came with his brother Charles, who served in
the Revolutionary War, a major in the German regiment of MD line.

This reviewer has already found in the book a helpful clue
to one of the families he has been researching.

$10.95.
We are all familiar with the work of this author, and this
reviewer applauds Mr . Baxter ' s compilation of the United Germany
Edition of this research aid. He touches upon Lutheran, Jewish,
and Mormon Records, as well as Archives, Germans in the United
States and Canada, and German Genealogical Associations.
This worthwhile research aid is highly recommended.

and Index by Robert Barnes. Baltimore: Clearfield Co. $18.00.
This reprint is a small book which contains a large group of
Baltimore County records. These records were originally published
in the Maryland Historical Magazine by Scisco between 1929 and
1941. Robert Barnes has done everyone a great favor by adding an
Introduction and an Index, which ( hooray 1 ) contains names of land
tracts. This book is a valuable addition to the library of anyone
interested in Baltimore County.

the time frame. There are several alphabetical listings, one from
each of the books used. Names have been presented exactly as
spelled in the original record. This is an extremely important
research tool for anyone working on Upshur County families. '

Volume 1 has already been reviewed in this journal, and this
volume contains additional helpful information on the family,
which has spread from Maryland into Ohio, Kentucky, Virginia,
Illinois, and points west. Although the chapter on Early Durbins
of England, merely contains notes from the IGI, the rest of the
book contains family histories, ancestor charts, and transcriptions of source materials, which make this an excellent source
book on the families included. Among the related families are the
Arnolds, Baxters, Blubaughs, Mattinglys, Paynes, and many others.

in the Allen Co. IN Public Library in Fort Wayne, Allegany County
Community College in Cumberland, the Carroll and Frederick County
Historical Societies, and the Baltimore County Genealogical
Societies. Mr. Koch has graciously given permission for any of

Inhabitants of Cecil County, Maryland, 1649-1774. By Henry C.
Peden. Westminster: Family Line Publications, 1993. Pp. vii, 250.
Indexed. $18.00.
Henry Peden has produced another helpful book of source
materials for anyone working on cecil County. Patents and
certificates, petitions, tax lists, militia lists, civil officers
might expected to be found, as they are. The compiler has also
included lists of insolvent debtors, unlawful cohabitations,
naturalizations, persons owing court costs, and a 1757 constables ' wheel carriages make this a worthwhile contribution to our
knowledge of daily life in early Maryland. The book is well done,
and is highly recommended.

Newspaper Abstracts of Frederick County. 1816-1819. By P. Edward
Wright. Westminster: Family Line Publications, 1993. Pp. vii,
205. Indexed. $12.50.
This book is a continuation of several other books of
newspaper abstracts, and fills the gap between similar books of
abstracts for the years 1786 to 1815 and 1820 to 1840. Marriages
and deaths, legal notices, business advertisements, and notices
of insolvent debtors create a picture of life on what used to be
the frontier of Maryland, but by this time was becoming well
settled. As with other books in this series, the numbers in the
index refer to issues of newspapers, and not to pages. If your
ancestors ventured west of the branches of the Patapsco, you will
want to have this book.

BCGS Member James E. Crockett writes that the Baltimore County
Historical Society has purchased a complete set of Filby's PILI
volumes as well as Baltimore City Directories through 1860, the
latter on microfiche.
The Maryland State Archives in Annapolis now has on the wordcruncher the following data bases: an index to the 1890 Census of
Maryland Veterans receiving pensions, and an index to the heads
of families in Baltimore City and County in the 1870 census of
Maryland. This material was made available by Accelerated
Indexing Systems, who are planning to publish an index to the
entire 1870 census of Maryland later this year.

Sands (1875-1955), great-aunt of Mrs. David L. Cooper (Mary
Read), 2820 Kelly Square, Vienna, VA 22181. These records were
made available to Balto. Co. Gen. Society by Thomas Rutledge.
The records pertain to the Sands family originally of
Annapolis, MD. Samuel Sands' second wife, Areanna, then widowed,
moved to Baltimore, MD, c.1811. There are entries pertaining to
the Samuel Sands, son of Samuel and Areanna, and his wife Sarah
Buckler Innes Sands (Note by Mrs. Cooper).

THE VACATION:
TRAVELING FOR RESEARCH OR JUST VISITING RELATIVES

The vacation can be a golden opportunity or a disaster; it
will be what you make of it.
First and foremost is preparation. Don't wait until you get
to your destination to decide where to go and what to look for.
Have a plan.
If you are traveling strictly for research, travel light.
You are going to gather information. There is no need to take all
of your genealogical data, notes, records, forms, and charts.
Evaluating and sorting out the data you gather can be done when
you come home. If you are really travelling light, don't take a
typewriter or computer, especially if you will be researching in
small towns. Most libraries don't have the room for you to use
this equipment.... Many small town libraries do not have copy

machines for public use, but if you need to have copies
reproduced, they will take an order and mail the materials to
you. Place your order while you are there and pay for the copies
and postage.
Study maps in connection with your itinerary.. Find your
destinations in specific towns, and mark them on a map. If you
are not driving your own car to your destination, plan to rent a
car when you get there. It will be cheaper and will save time.
Find out where the record centers are before you leave home.
Is there a local historical or genealogical society? Libraries
(and even college libraries) may contain a lot of information on
local history.
Find out the hours and days the research centers are open so
you can avoid arriving in a town on the day the repository is
closed. Try to make your route a continuous line, avoiding backtracking, so that you begin and end at the same place.
Identify all sources of information used. Keep all data
gathered at a particular library or repository together in an
envelope with the name and address of the library on it.
Be sure to take plenty of pencils.
You do not need to travel First Class. Stay at a Bed and
Breakfast or Motel. Keep your costs down as much as possible.
Spend some time in the towns where your forebears lived, and soak
up the atmosphere. If you can find the schools or churches they
attended take pictures; if you locate an ancestral home, be sure
to get the present owner's permission before photographing it.
Remember that not everyone cares about genealogy. Be
courteous, patient, and friendly. Don't demand service or
information. You are an outsider and a guest.
If you are visiting relatives take a notebook. Always write
down who told you anything, and try to visit the older relatives.
Write down everything you are told, and if people are mentioned
of whom you are never heard, write their names down and try to
find out more about them.
Carry your notebook everywhere. Who cares if you are
remembered as "Crazy Aunt Nellie or Uncle Joe with the
Notebook." At least you will be remembered.

Mr. Virdin has compiled two bibliographies that should be
of some value to family history researchers. The Maryland and
Delaware bibliography contains names and addresses of historical
and genealogical organizations for the two states. The Pennsylvania bibliography gives names and addresses of major repositories where the books can be found.
The Maryland and Delaware volume lists about 800 titles,
while the Pennsylvania book contains about 2800 titles. Each
volume contains an index of family names mentioned in titles that
are not listed in the text under that name.
Perhaps no bibliography can ever be truly complete, but a
survey of the Maryland volume reveals some omissions: The Dorsey,
Dorsey and Nimmo study of The Dorsey Family is not listed.
Newman's original volume of Anne Arundel Gentry (1933) is
listed, but the three volumes of Anne Arundel Gentry: Revised
and Augmented are missing.
Nevertheless both volumes should be helpful for locating new
sources to be checked.
Guide to Research in Baltimore City and County, 2nd ed. By Robert

Baltimore City and County researchers who purchased the
first edition of this guide know how useful it is; this reviewer
purchased a copy and it is one of just a few books that is used
again and again to located everything from maps to manuscript
collections. Mr. Barnes has revised his 1989 best seller and
added many new features to coordinate the wealth of genealogical
information that has been produced in the past several years. New
sections include funeral home records, computers in genealogy, an
updated bibliography of sources and a section on note taking and
assessing records.
Anyone with an interest in doing genealogical research in
Baltimore City and County should add this book to his or her
collection. Mr. Barnes has been researching both personally and
professionally in these areas for over thirty years, and his

knowledge of the records and sources is unrivaled. Many local
researchers (including this reviewer1) have benefitted from Mr.

Migrations of early families are hard to trace, especially
since they often lived in several counties or states before
settling down. Nicodemus Barnes was born not 20 miles from
baltimore. He claimed to have served in the Revolution, and then
moved to NC, then to Chester'Co., SC. He moved on to Roan Co.,
TN, and by 1843 was in Clinton Co., KY.
Genealogists will be happy to have this volume to help them
trace those members of their families who "went to Carolina."
Land records, pension applications, Quaker records, and state and
county histories were combed to find the names of those who went
south, whether for religious, political, economic or other
reasons.

Immigration books are always welcome, and Mr. Sheppard's
volume is a scholarly examination of a number of lists originally
compiled by Marion R. Balderston, Francis James Dallett, Hannah
Benner Roach, Marion Bunting, and Mr. Sheppard. The passenger
lists are extensively annotated making them invaluable for
reconstructing the lives of early Pennsylvania settlers. So many
Marylanders trace their ancestry to these early arrivals that the
book is an important addition to libraries.
Hiaht-Hite Families of Sussex and Surry Counties, VA. from about

This book deals with the over 1300 descendants of John Hite
who came to VA in 1656, and includes information of related
families of Acres, Augusta, Bacon, Chambly, Cotton, Demastus,
Duffer, Gee, Hopkins, Hudson, Hurlow, Johnson, Jones, Maben,
McDaniel, Neblett, Sheffield, Simmons, Smith, Thompson, Wallace,
Wells, Wilkensons, Willhites, and Ystrom. There is an index to
the material on pp. 1-60, but beginning on p. 115 is a Chronology
of early Rights containing information from land records, tax
lists, census records, parish records, and wills not only from
Virginia, but from georgia, and North Carolina as well. It is
unfortunate that this material is not indexed, because the book

contains too much information not to have , but the lack of an
index detracts from the usefulness of the book.
Royal Genealogies
The Genealogical Publishing Company has issued two new
titles in this field. The first is The Royal Descents of 500
Immigrants to the American Colonies or the United States. By Gary
Boyd Roberts. Baltimore: GPC, 1993. Pp. Ixxviii, 622. Indexed;
Illus.; Bibliography. $45.00 (plus $3.00 p/h).
The compiler, Director of Publications at the NEHG Society,
has compiled an outstanding volume of royal descents for 570
immigrants to the United States. A typical entry gives the line
of descent followed by the sources. Although the descent contains
few dates or places, interested descendants can reconstruct the
pedigree from the sources given. Although only 13 immigrants to
Maryland are included, a number of the settlers in Virginia and
Pennsylvania had children or grandchildren who came to Maryland.
This reviewer has been working on the Mauduit family that settled
in Prince George's County in the early 18th century. He was
delighted to see that a collateral branch of the family contained
the progenitors of actor Peter Lawford. Other families with
Maryland connections discussed are: Arundell, Bladen, Boteler,

The compiler brought out his first volume in 1903. The last
appeared in 1911, and contains information on 50,000 descendants
of Edward III, with over 300,000 lines of descent. The projected
series was never completed, but the five volumes that did appear
are probably the "most extensive of the various attempts to trace
all of the lines of descent of any portion of English royalty..."
Among the Maryland families included are Digges, Jerningham,
Markland, Somerset, and Wyvill. In each volume the lines of
descent are traced first in a series of pedigree charts bringing
the descents down to the early or mid 19th century, and then in a
series of narratives giving full particulars of the families.
Persons interested in royal genealogy and libraries will
want to have these books.

JOTTINGS FROM THE EDITOR'S OWN NOTEBOOK
The Maryland State Archives has a new index on the "Word
Cruncher:" an index of heads of families in the 1870 census of
Baltimore City and County. This index was made available to the
Archives by the publishers of a forthcoming book, Index to the
1870 Census of Maryland. The index shows the full name, age,
birthplace, ward or district of residence, page number and
microfilm number where the full family entry can be examined.
Like most researchers, the editor quickly punched in the
last names of families he was searching. In a few cases he could
not find the individual sought. One problem was solved by keying
in the first name of the person sought — a native of Portugal.
Sure enough the name was found: not Anthony Fratis, but Anthony
Fraley, birthplace Portugal.
Another missing ancestor, William Swam, was found by typing
in Wiseburg, the Post Office of the 6th District, and there
appeared the name: William "Swim." (Swim was one of the new
spelling variations not checked) .
Using this remarkable index, it would be possible to call up
all the people who lived in a certain district, who were born in
a particular place, or who had a certain first name.

The genealogical books sent to the Maryland Historical
Society by the George Peabody Library are being catalogued and
stored temporarily on new shelving of the MHS. It is hoped that
within a few months these books will all be catalogued and
brought down to the main floor to be merged with the collection.
These new books include many titles dealing with Southern and New
England source records.

The editor has found a way to combine an old love
(genealogy) with a new one (post card collecting) . For some time
he has been collecting post cards with flags and coats of arms.
Recently however, he has expanded his collection to include post
cards of English parish churches, so that if he finds one of the
parish of origin for one of his own, or a client's, family, he
can xerox it for his genealogy files. Perhaps surprisingly,
black and white photographs of the early 1920 's and 1930 's are
more suitable for this purpose than modern color photographs.

PUZZLING PIECES FROM THE PAST
The items in this article have been gathered by the Editor
in the course of many years of researching. Anyone who can
provide additional identification is urged to communicate with
the Editor.
DOUGLAS, JOSEPH, alias Douglas Hamilton, of St. Paul's Parish,
Baltimore, died prior to March 1774, when administration was
granted in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, to Rachel
Crispin, widow, attorney for Douglas' relict, Rachel Douglas
alias Reachel Dugles, in Baltimore County. In Nov. 1791 this
administration was revoked and granted by his solemn affirmation
to John Blake, attorney fbr the only child, George Crispin
Douglas (Peter Wilson Coldham, American Wills and Administrations
Proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, 1610-1857,
Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc., 1989, p. 92).
Joseph Hamilton Douglas m. Rachel Bayard on 4 April 1768..
They were the parents of: George Crispin Douglas, b. 18 Sept.
1772 (Bill Reamy and Martha Reamy, Records of St. Paul's Parish,

SIMMS, MARY, alias MARY LITTLE, came into court on 26 Oct. 1763
and stated that she was the daughter of William and Mary Simms,
and that she m. Henry Little in St. Paul's Parish when she was
only 12 years old. She renounced the marriage (Baltimore County
Chattel Records, BIG, 1763-1773, Maryland State Archives)
William "Sim" died by 25 July 1761 when administration bond
was posted by Mary Sim, administratrix, with John Money and John
Simpson (or Sampson as sureties. On 31 Aug. 1761 Henry "Littill,"
administrator de bonis non, posted a second bond. Charles Gordon
and Thomas Clendening were his sureties (Baltimore County
Administration Bonds, 6:28, 29, Maryland State Archives).
Mary "Sims," widow, died leaving a will dated 1 Aug. 1761,
proved 31 Aug. 1761, naming her son-in-law Henry Little as
executor, leaving a lot, house and furniture in Baltimore Town to
Henry Little of Baltimore Town and his wife Mary, and leaving 1
shilling each to Alexander Russell of Baltimore Town, joiner,
and his wife Ann. Robert Armstrong, John Simpson and George
Markham witnessed the will (Balto. Co. 'Wills, 2:335, Maryland
State Archives).
SIMPSON, THOMAS, died leaving a will. Edward Pontany, Jr., son of
William, John Curtis, Conrad Hush, and George Fight [Fite]
caution all persons from buying his estate from Sarah Ward or
any of her children or her sons in law. Edward Pontany, Sr., and
the said Sarah Ward cohabited together, and now that Pontany is
deceased, Sarah Ward styles herself Sarah Pontany, but the
records of St. Paul's Parish show her to be Sarah Ward (Maryland
Journal and Baltimore Advertiser, 12 Nov. 1784).

THE WINDS OF WAR
The following letter, dated 14 Nov. 1814, was found by George L.
Horvath in Baltimore City Archives Records RG No. 5, Series 1,
HRS No. 1814, Doc. 167.
to the Commissioners of Tax of Baltimore County:
Gentlemen: These few lines is to inform you of the losses I
have sustained since the last assessment of my own property - and
the property I have under my care as Guardian to. the heir of
Elisha Sellers (deceased) lying in Patapsco Neck. As for my own
is a negro man who died a few months past, between 14 and 45
years of age. The loss of the Estate of Elisha Sellers is very
considerably destroyed by the Enemy, they have burnt all the
Improvements that was of any value, they destroyed by fire a
large brick dwelling house, a large brick barn, and shed, a brick
stable, a granary, corn house & injured several small houses.
From the [least?] calculation I do not ^think can be replaced for
six thousand dollars at the present time.
Gentlemen, I hope you will take this in consideration as it
has rendered the plantation Entire useless.

SANDS BIBLE
Mary Read Cooper, 2820 Kelly Square, Vienna, VA 22181-6153, is
the person who gave the Society the copy of the Sands Bible in
The Notebook, Vol. 10,No. 2, pp. 22-23.
She states that Samuel Sands (5) was the young 14 year old
apprentice who set the "Star Spangled Banner" in type for the
first time.
She adds the Bible did not give the birth date or parentage
of William Bell Sands (12), but he was a son of Samuel (5) and
Sarah Buckler (Innes) Sands, and was listed in the 1850 Census as
8 years old, and in the 1900 Census as age 50.

Quarterly Conferences contain information on both the clergy and
lay people. The book is a welcome addition to one's Harford
County or Church History Book Shelf.

Henry Peden has combed the General Entries Books, 1801-1830,
at the Harford County Court House in Bel Air to abstracts any
references to children whose parents were unable to take care of
them or who wanted them to learn a useful trade. Since many
people in the early years did not leave wills, or had such small
estates that there was nothing to distribute to the heirs, this

book will fill in many gaps in the histories of Harford County
families. Many entries give the age or birth date of the child.
The compiler is well known for his helptul books, and this is
another book that anyone interested in the region or the time
period must have.

With these two volumes Ed Wright adds to the growing number
of volumes of Pennsylvania Church Records which must not be overlooked by family historians in Maryland, especially those working
in the northern portion of the state. Volume I contains records
of 15 Lutheran and Reformed Congregations. The Introduction
contains names of congregations for many denominations and
instructions on using the records. A map of the townships of
Lancaster County enhances the usefulness of the work. Volume II
contains the records of the First Reformed Congregation of
Lancaster. These books, each with a full name index, make
research in the county much easier.

This slim volume provides a quick reference to Genealogical

book opens with a calendar of genealogical events. Then a
description of the addresses, hours, and research conditions at
numerous research centers. Maps are included showing exactly
where the facilities are located. Recommended state and regional
guides are listed throughout the work, which also has genealogical tips interspersed throughout the pages. The last part of the
book deals with the addresses and hours of Family History Centers
throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region.

In 1986 F. Edward Wright published Vital Records of Kent and
Sussex Counties, Delaware, 1686-1800. T*hese two volumes round out
the published extant church records of Delaware. Volume 1
contains records of Episcopal, Baptist, Friend, Presbyterian,
Methodist and Roman Catholic Churches, as well as marriage bonds
from the court house. Volume 2 contains records of the Old
Swedes' (Crane Hook) Church in Wilmington. Many entries give the
addresses of the parties, and a number 'of Marylanders are so
described. These books are well done, contain an every name

This is another in the continuing series of abstracts of
early probate records made available to researchers by the
compiler. Although it is always best to* consult the original
records, these abstracts contain an every name index to all those
who appear in the originals, making it easy to trace individuals
in this time period. Marriage references are frequently found,
not only among the executrices or administratrices of the
deceased, but in the list of debtors or creditors also. In the
1716 account of the estate of William Cotter of Anne Arundel
County, payment was made David Gray, husband of a Penelope
Persons. This would not have been found if Skinner had only
abstracted the names of the deceased, and those who settled his
estate. The book is well worth the price.
Parceling Out Land in Baltimore, 1632-1796. By Garrett Power.

This well researched narrative te^ls the story of the
parceling out of the land grants in the original Baltimore Town
from survey to the first building. The narrative is carried down
to 1796 when Baltimore Town was incorporated as a city, and
includes biographical sketches of the early settlers and
speculators. If the book has a fault it is the lack of an index,
but students of Baltimore history will <find it an excellent
addition to their libraries.
Inhabitants of Kent County, Maryland, 1637-1787. By Henry C.
Peden, Jr. Westminster: Family Line Publications, 1994. Pp. vi,
272. Indexed. $19.50.
Like Mr. Peden's earlier works on the inhabitants of
Baltimore and Cecil Counties, this book is made up of lists of
names drawn from list of patentees, tax lists, court proceedings,
vestry proceedings, revolutionary war records, and other sources,
resulting in a volume containing hundreds (if not thousands) of
names. The Assessment List of 1783 is included, with entries
arranged by tract names with names of owners following, like all
of the compiler's books, this is highly recommended.
The next page contains records from a Efonnoly Family Bible,
transcribed and annotated by Carol Porter.

"Death of Jacob Bunce - A Patriarch Who Had
27 Children -A Remarkable Han"

Jacob Bunce died on Dec. 30th at his home near Webster at
the advanced age of 87 years less three months. He was born in
Chestertown, Kent Co., MD. Mr. Bunce was married three times. His
first wife was Miss Blackston of Baltimore who died childless.
His second wife was Miss Mary Greenland of Harford [Co.] who bore
him 19 children - two sets of twins and one of triplets. Of the
19 only six are living: Mrs. George Cullum, Mrs. D. Spencer, Mrs.
Henry Lackey, Mrs. J. T. Mitchell, Mrs. James McCommons of
Harford Co., and Mrs. Alex. McNeill of Philadelphia. Mr. Bunce 's
third wife was Miss Margaret McCommons who survives him. She was
the mother of eight children, only three of whom are living:
namely: John, David, and Edward Bunce. Mr. Bunce, when quite
young, learned the coopering trade in Baltimore after which he
came to Harford and had lived in the same neighborhood for over
52 years. He was a man of iron constitution and of more than
ordinary ability. He was noted for his strict integrity and
unvarying truthfulness. He had received merely an ordinary school
education, but was a great reader and thinker and was possessed
of a prodigious memory. It was often remarked that he had never
attempted to talk upon a subject unless he understood it.
About six years ago, Mr. bunce joined the Trinity Episcopal
church at Churchville, and in his zeal shamed many a younger
Christian. He would walk all the way to church as long as he was
able and he died the death of the righteous - a beautiful
deathbed. Mr. Bunce left numerous grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Interment [was] on Jan. 1st at Weslyn [sic]
Chapel. The following were pallbearers: J. H. Preston, Alex
gilbert, Geo. Anderson, Jarrett Standiford, B. F. Gallion, and E.
H. Foard (The Aegis, Jan. 6, 1893).

Cowenton United Methodist Church in northeast Baltimore County is
in its 92nd year, and is trying to find the names of pastors on
the Chase Circuit between 1912 and 1924. The Circuit may have had
another name back then when the parsonage burned with all the
records in it. Camp Chapel, Ebenezer, and Orems U. M. Churches
were other churches on the Circuit. Anyone having information is

Mr. Pippenger has compiled a mammoth source book that
presents marriage licenses for the District of Columbia in a
format that lists both brides and grooms, obviating the need for
an index. The Introduction discusses the history of the records

and how they were preserved. The difficulty of dealing with
unusual spellings is also discussed. The book is well done, and
is highly recommended for anyone researching families in the
District or the counties of Maryland or Virginia that are nearby.
Maryland Calendar of Wills; 1772-1774; Volume 15. Continuing the
Series Begun by Jane Baldwin Cotton. Westminster: Family Line
Publications, 1994. Pp. iv, 241. Indexed. $16.00.
The introduction discusses various published abstracts of
Maryland Wills and other probate records. The text contains
abstracts of wills from maryland Will Book 39, and contains some
abstracts that were not included in Magruder's Maryland Colonial
Abstracts. The full name index also contains names of tracts and
names of negroes who only had one name. This is a basic research
tool that all Maryland researchers will want to have.

Proceedings. By V. L. Skinner, Jr. Westminster: Family Line
Like the preceding volumes in Mr. Skinners' most excellent
series, this volume helps to create a fuller picture of the
estate records left by Maryland decedents — whether or not they
died testate. The Introduction explains the symbols used and the
format of the text, which includes not only the names of the
deceased and the accountants, but also the names of everyone
named in the record: indentured servants, debtors, creditors,
and next of kin. Researchers will have to have this book for
their personal research libraries .
Chancery Books of Carroll County, Maryland, Volumes 1-20, 18371873. Abstracted by Virginia D. Stenley. Westminster: Family Line
Chancery cases abound with family history that may not be
found in other records. A typical entry gives the book and page
number, as well as Equity Case number; the names of the
litigants, and a summary of the genealogical information and the
names of any tracts mentioned. The full name index also includes
names of tracts. The compiler is to be commended for having
produced an extremely helpful volume, which rseearchers in the
area will want to have.

1694-1722. Volume 3. By Elise Greenup Jourdan. Westminster:

Like Elise Jourdan' s preceding volumes of land records of
Charles and Prince George's County Land Records, this newest
volume is full of helpful data for genealogical researchers. The
exact liber and page numbers are given if anyone should wish to
obtain a full copy of the original record. Names of grantors and

grantees are in bold face type, and names of tracts are in
italics. Tract names are included in the index. The book is
highly recommended.
Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, Church Records of the 18th
Century. By F. Edward Wright. Westminster: Family Line

The third volume in this series of church records contains
records of Sadsbury Monthly Meeting, St. James1 Episcopal Church,
St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, Baptismal and Marriage
registers of Reverend John Cuthbertson and Casper Stoever, and
the Records of Donegal Presbyterian Church. The records of
Sadsbury Meeting contain references to some early Maryland
settlers, and the Registers of Rev. John Cuthbertson contain a
few Maryland items. The book is a "must-have" for Pennsylvania
researchers .
The West Family Data Base, Vol. 1. By Howard E. West, Jr. 1991,
Repr.: Bowie: Heritage Books, Inc., 1994. Pp. 350. Indexed; soft
cover .
The records of the West family gathered for this data base
span the thirteenth century to the present, and have been
collected from census, military, tax, and probate files, as well
as family Bibles. Mr. West has arranged his work in a clear
chronological format with categories for each person that include
the date of record, and, if known, the names of spouses,
siblings, parents, the record type and a comment on the type of
record and where it was found. If there is a weak area in this
work, it lies in the fact that the reader is not given a full
citation to the source of the record. For example, the entry for
Edmund West 1784 is a probate record found in Edmond County,
Virginia, but the location, book and page number were not
included. These omissions will cause researchers additional work
as they will have to trace the records from the clues in this
volume to validate these lines.
Aside from this, the compiler has done an admirable job in
pulling together all of the information he could find on the West
family. His data base also includes fifty-seven family charts,
twelve maps, a bibliography, and a full" name index. This book
will undoubtedly become a well used source of information on the
West family and their migration from England to America.

This third volume of Bible Records brings to a total of 83
pages of such records published by the society. The Bibles
included in this book were collected by members of the Society
from a variety of sources. Each Bible record is accompanied by

Publication Data, and additional Comments on the family. In
addition to the surname index for this volume, the Society has
included a combined surname index to all three volumes published
to date. Many of the Bibles were published in the 19th Century,
but quite a few contain entries from the eighteenth century. Like
the other special publications of the Harford County Genealogical
Society, this will prove a very helpful volume for family
researchers in the area.
